3- borrowing dice/having no tokens/ counters I'm really glad you got that G/W tokens deck built. Would you mind spending a whopping 6 bucks to represent all the tokens you're making by buying a ****ing dice cube. 2-spaz hand shuffling Brian kibler invented this because he's afraid of social interaction. Seriously, say you meet ANYONE worth a salt. You tell them you play magic; no big deal, right? WRONG. 1-telling people you're a loser because you play magic
This seriously gets me. Just recently at a dark ascension pre release there was a film crew filming a documentary about magic. When asked "why do you play magic" a player said "because I have no life, I don't want to be on camera so you hipster movie ****s can make fun of us". Honestly, my Heart broke. I really enjoy the people I play magic with. I could give two ****s what they
Do or what that look like. I'm just happy to see them every time I show up to play. Magic is a social game, it only thrives because it has a community. Trading, testing, casuals... Ect. So seriously, if you play magic, yes you are a nerd, but you're probaly more socially adept, accepting, and accommodating then probaly half the human population. Don't doubt and hate yourself.
I don't mind loosing, but I do mind loosing to loose change, a shoe lace, and a burger king wrapper because you refuse to buy dice.
This one made me LOL... Did the shoelace have trample?
I would say my BIGGEST pet peeve is when you're drafting... you pick a REALLY good removal spell or Bomb creature in your color... and the guy you just passed to says "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU PASSED ME THIS!!!!! IT'S SOOO GOOD!!!!"
Great, that's fine... and likely 3rd pack and not in my color.
I don't have five, but number one would definitely be "using the wrong you're when talking about me."
Just teasing. The trade thing is awful. We have one guy who always does it, and he asks for the most backwards stuff when we're trying to play mid -tournament. No, I don't have any foil relentless rats, your thrummingrats deck isn't very good anyway, foiling it isn't going to help.
5) Blaming mana screw, citing it as the only reason why you lost.
This one, while it can be annoying if it happens all the time is actually a real complaint...just when it is then it is fairly obvious. No 3rd land drop for 5 turns, no spells played until turn 6. You can always attribute part of it to "poor deck construction" (which is what my friend and me say to each other when we get mana screwed), but it does happen bbut probably not as much as some people say. When they blame mana screw for a loss when they were one mana short of Giant Spell X, or Large Storm, then I totally agree.

2. Pushy speculative trading. I don't mind if a guy is like "I don't want to trade for that 'cause it's gonna go down/up," but don't push your imaginary prices on me. If something is worth $25 now, that's what it's worth. If you think it's gonna go down, you can bloody wait to trade for it.

4. Drawing a card immediately after combat ends. Srsly, hold on. I know how to play Magic, so I use my second main phase.
Yeah that's a biggie. I always wait till someone says they are at end of turn before I go... but then they never do and they sit there staring at their cards like I'm a mind reader. TELL ME YOU ARE DONE!!!!!
5. Giving me a signal to signify his/her turn has ended. Honestly, I do not notice this most of the time and the opponent ends up saying "Done" in an annoyed manner.
4. Trading amidst a game.
3. Accidentally spilling drinks or dripping drinks at a game table. The table gets really sticky and makes my sleeves/play mat dirty and sticky as well.
2. Trash talking. It is funny, but only to some extent. Calling me poor when you lose to my lower priced deck or because my deck isn't as expensive/complete as the netdeck counterpart really annoys me. Quoting a recent FNM opponent "I might have lost, but dude, at least I can afford to make a top tier deck". It really bugs me.
1. RAGEQUIT! Lol. A few people I have encountered just ragequit when they get mana screwed, are close to the win but somehow lose or lose to opponents they think they're better than. (Sadly I did this when I got mana screwed at a crucial match.) LOL
5. Giving me a signal to signify his/her turn has ended. Honestly, I do not notice this most of the time and the opponent ends up saying "Done" in an annoyed manner.
That's the thing though... part of being a good player is paying attention to the other player. Watching their mannerisms, and subtle queues in the way they react to their draws and hand manipulation can sometimes be telling.
Things that I sometimes dislike when I go to draft once a week:
(1) When people are super serious and anti-social and won't even respond to you when you try to talk to them while playing.
(2) When people start to untap their mana and draw a card when I have not even said I am done with my turn yet.
(3) When people start discussing the cards they picked and decks their playing during draft before we're even through the first pack. I have no problem dicking around and having fun but at least keep the strategy and guesswork and signaling related to drafting in mind until you're through all 3 packs.
(4) When people draft ****ty rares because they "needed that card" instead of actually drafting to try and make a good deck.
(5) Playing against 9 year olds who are playing with their parents sitting next to them. It's just awkward.
EDIT: Oh man and how could I forget, the thing I actually hate the MOST by far - People who come to draft and leave after the first game, dooming someone in the pod to having a bye and having to sit there twiddling their thumbs instead of getting to play. For some reason, people who leave after draft and without finishing their games make me rage so hard :/
5 not showering before a game. Come on, if I can find the time to clean up in an airport bathroom, going on no sleep between a grand prix and legacy open...you can shower at home before a game.
4 taking 5 minutes to decide wether to counter a spell or not. I get that you are playing control but five mins of not playing a spell and I will call the judge
3 complaining about how stale standard is ad naseum. Dont like standard theres tons of other formats to play
2 complaining about hand shuffling/card flicking. We do this to hide iinformation (like wether we are topdecking answers or not....post Gitaxian probe it really helps

Yeah sliding the cards you draw does at least serve a purpose. It keeps you from accidentally picking up two cards and if you do pick up an extra one you can notice before putting it in your hand.

Someone did that to me, except I was passing a freaking foil swamp. I'm not going to miss a useful card for a foil swamp, especially since I bought the Graveborn deck after the event. Yay 22 foil swamps!
It didn't bother me that much, but I definitely understand the complaint. (Few things truly bother me so...)
Oh yeah I thought of one. My friend built a draft deck with absurdly few lands, and then was irritated because he got mana screwed EVERY GAME. IF YOU DON'T DRAW ENOUGH LANDS 9 GAMES IN A ROW, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO YOUR DECK?!
So I guess that counts as "Complaining about mana screw when your deck is the problem" or something?
Someone did that to me, except I was passing a freaking foil swamp. I'm not going to miss a useful card for a foil swamp, especially since I bought the Graveborn deck after the event. Yay 22 foil swamps!
Wow... that's kind of funny. But yeah, the "people OMGing" in a draft seems to happen ALL THE TIME to me, regardless of where I play. Sometimes it's all in fun, and people at the table are simply complaining about pack quality (because let's face it, sometimes the whole table opens crap), but otherwise I think it's just someone making sure everyone at the table knowing how "pro" he is.
I tend to be pretty serious and quiet at the table myself, but only because I get fairly easily distracted and lose track of my strategy. I usually lighten up once we're building though.
That's the thing though... part of being a good player is paying attention to the other player. Watching their mannerisms, and subtle queues in the way they react to their draws and hand manipulation can sometimes be telling.
I understand, but sometimes the nerves get to me. My bad
1. Think that crappy cards are good and thinking your deck can go up in FNM or tournaments. It can't.... your too slow and your playing too much expensive crap with 21 lands.
2. Ragequitting.... this drives me insane to no end
3. Over-extending all the time or thinking that I dont have an answer because im tapped out. Im playing a Legacy Fish build and you honestly think that I can't do anything because im tapped out.
4. Coming up with House rules..... There fine until you invalidate all my decks by arbitrarily labeling all of my combos as "Infinite"
5. Outsiders. Seriously, leave us alone..... You came from school, you think we're playing yu-gi-hoe or pokemon and feign interest that comes off as mocking. Im seriously sick of it to no end. You may laugh at us, but when your lying in a pool of blood because you mesed with the wrong person and we're still having fun and chilling, maybe you could of been there had you not been a idiotic (explitive). Sorry about this last point, its just a very annoying thing to me.
There's no need to post like this; reign it in, please. Infraction issued. r~
Biggest gripe: not talking at all during a match. If you're going to sit there listening to your iPod while playing then why the heck aren't you just at home playing MTGO? Magic is a social game and part of being sociable is talking to and interacting with your opponent.
hehe you guys would hate me then. I purposely use random junk as tokens with the intention of annoying people, as so many guys at the shop I frequent seem to think it's blasphemous to use anything other than cards or glass beads. For that very reason, I have a small bag that contains a paper clip, a rubberband, a pen cap, and one of those small circular batteries among other things.
Heh, one time I even used a pack of M&Ms as tokens, and every time one would leave play, I would eat it!
As far as my list:
5. Can't think of anything for the 5-spot. I don't get annoyed by what people do easily. Mostly, it isn't playing habits that get to me, it's the obviously ignorant things people say or do that they have no earthly to be saying/doing. All four of these examples, I think you will agree, stem from that.
4. Telling me a card that I'm playing is junk, sub-par, or that there are better choices. I'll be blunt here. I don't care what you think of my play choices because they are MY play choices. Nobody is forcing you to play that card. And the chances are I'm fully aware that said card might not be the best for playing purposes, but there is likely a good reason that I'm using it. Maybe it's a budget choice, or perhaps I'm playtesting. There are any number of reasons I might be playing this card and one of them isn't to garner your opinion on its playability.
3. Setting open containers of liquid anywhere near the playing field. While I personally have managed to avoid this disaster-waiting-to-happen, I have seen a Tarmogoyf take a face full of Pepsi and the drama that ensued. Even with card protectors on, there is signicant risk for damage were there to be a spill. If you want to have a drink at the table, that's fine, but please make sure to keep a lid on it just in case.
2. Shuffling my deck after I've already shuffled it. Especially when we're only playing at an FMN. Heck, I've had people do this in a casual game. Now I understand that this is common procedure at the highest level events, but I still find it to be highly irritating. Each time, it feels like I'm being subtly accused of cheating. I'm sorry, but if you have trust issues this serious, you shouldn't be playing a game of chance. Cheating isn't as prevailant as many people seem to think, even at the highest level. And I assure you that those judges that hang around the play tables are trained to look for signs of cheating. All you accomplish by shuffling my deck prior to a game is losing any chance of me respecting you as a human being, let alone a Magic player. Seriously, learn to chill out and at least try to enjoy yourself while playing a GAME.
1. But I would have to say that the one thing that annoys me most of all is people that go on forums and post threads to complain about the playing habits of others. I got bad news for you folks, you're not Mr. Perfection yourself. I'm reasonably sure there are things that you do that annoys the crap out of others too. Here's a great idea. Before taking the time to critique others, perhaps you should take a long, hard look at yourself first and try fixing any imperfection you might find there.
(5) Playing against 9 year olds who are playing with their parents sitting next to them. It's just awkward
I know it's horible to say, but I seriously hate little Kids playing magic. I draft every week and I cringe when I get paired with a kid younger then 16. Their parents hang over every game. It's distracting.
I'm 34. I'm going to enter the SCG tour, but have my dad... A born and raised NYC irish construction worker stand over the table while I play. I bet I win every game because nobody would preform while a red haired nick Nolte did commentary. "you dressed like this... Those pants... Seriously, those pants? Im fat and my whole body could fit into one leg. How much did you spend in this ****? Oh man, condoms for cards? You spend more money on protecting card board then having kids? Jesus!"
So yeah, me and my dad. Pro tour. Watch out.

There was a really, really good player (top ten in VA) who I FNMed with for like four years. I don't think we exchanged any words for the first two years I knew the guy, 'cause I was pretty new and stuck mostly to my friends (him and his friends were not-so-affectionately referred to as the power gamers; realized later my friends were just being snotty about it). I got to know him pretty well later and we're friends now, but he still doesn't talk during matches. Turns out it's part of his play style, he freaks you out a bit by never speaking unless he needs to. He'd motion with his removal, reveal counterspells, assign blocks without a word. And I have to admit that, in retrospect, it caused me to play a lot more cautiously than I would have otherwise. It just freaks you out.

2 complaining about hand shuffling/card flicking. We do this to hide iinformation (like wether we are topdecking answers or not....post Gitaxian probe it really helps
1. Constant hand shuffling/card flicking. C'mon people, if you have some sort of nervous disorder, there's medication for that. If you're doing it because you think you're all "pro" -- watch Jon Finkel play. If you're doing it because you want to hide information, just shuffle up once or twice. You don't need to constantly shuffle the cards in your hand.
2. Body odor/uncleanliness
3. Touching my cards without permission
4. Pushy fast play to attempt to make me misplay
5. Mid-game trades
5. Acting high and mighty after you win a match against me. I'm a newbie to competitive public games. I've played sealed once or twice before, you're not some god at the store, show some class and shake hands. Don't go cheering to your friends.
4. Being a poor sport. You built your deck, you shuffled, you kept your hand. Don't moan and complain about the hand you were dealt. You play this game enough to know what to do and that mana clumps happen. Don't shove off the table like a monkey and go cave man on your deck.
3. Speeding up the game like it's race. I have decisions to make, I have removal to use in my hand, I have a chance to figure if I need to concede or not, I have a counter I could use. You trying ti psyche me out is just going to force me to take longer. Grow some patience, I know we're on a timer and I'm not stalling. I will work in a timely manner.
2. Hand shuffling. Stop it and I will call a judge over after I ask you to stop it if you continue. If that won't work, I will drag the game out because you're distracting me with your flicking.
1. Tacking on extra money on your cards worth, or taking off money on my cards worth. If we can't come to one site to use for both sides because you have a special feeling, you can just go kick rocks. I can buy the cards if I really wanted them, and I'll be happy to sit on the cards I want to trade until something proper comes along. Tell me that you only want certain cards for that card and I will understand, or tell me that you're not trading them. Don't tell me, "I value this more because I like the art; you don't see this around here; it's a legacy card and yours is Standard." The price is established, get with it.

1 complaining that my tier 2 jank combo is unfair or not a real deck after beating your pro tour net deck.

Yeah sliding the cards you draw does at least serve a purpose. It keeps you from accidentally picking up two cards and if you do pick up an extra one you can notice before putting it in your hand.
So my top 5 is people who complain
Wow... that's kind of funny.
I understand, but sometimes the nerves get to me. My bad

Infraction issued. r~
