Has anyone else noticed that Ultra Pro changed the size of their STANDARD card sleeves? It use to be 66mm x 91mm but I just got a pack of 65mm x 90mm. Is this a defect or their new STANDARD size for mtg cards?
I had this same issue... They've discontinued the larger ones and have since created the more "snug fit" ones to replace them. Problem is, many shops didn't notice the difference so you can find two different types on the same hook.

Not a defect. The optimist in me would say they're adjusting to the market and providing what players want. Sleeves that fit a bit more snug.
The pessimist in me says they're cutting costs and saving material. They are essentially saving 156 square mm per sleeve which doesn't seem like much but over the course of their entire production can add up.
If I recall correctly, the reason for making more 'snug' sleeves is so that the corners don't get bent as much, and the sleeves last longer. And while that's all well and good, I found out the hard way that you can't double-sleeve with these new sizes.
I found out when I was sleeving up an edh deck and noticed half of my deck didn't line up with the other. Thought it was a defect at first but then I saw two packs with different measurements at the store.
It annoys me because that means now if I want to replace sleeves I have to do the entire deck instead of a couple of cards. Same case with making a new deck with some of my older sleeved cards.

Actually depending on how their production machines are set up these new sleeves could be more wasteful and as expensive to produce as the old ones. They likely are using the same machines with only minor modifications. Since they are cutting it from the same sheets and making smaller sleeves they'd be wasting more material rather than saving

Yeah the same thing happened to me. Thankfully I only had 2-3 decks in the "old" sleeves... but I want to be consistant so I can switch out cards I only want to buy 4 of but run in multiple decks (like Snapcasters or dual lands).
I have, in the past, had a lot of problems with Ultra Pro sleeves, they split on the sides, fray, and are generally not very durable. I would get about 4 games out of a pack of sleeves before they were pretty much unusable.
That was why I ended up going with KMC. I have heard good about Dragon Sleeves, too, but have never used them. If they UP sleeves are a bit snugger fit, they should be more durable.

KMC sleeves are great. That's all I buy now. Get the matte back and double sleeve with KMC perfect fit and they will last a LONG time. The extra corner rigidity imparted by the "fatness" of a double-sleeved card helps keep those corners from bending. They're the clear winner for Cube (40 card decks), but unless you have huge hands it makes shuffling up a 60-card deck somewhat tricky.

Bah. My edh deck is double sleaved like this. It took some getting used to, but it's not that hard to shuffle. My hands are normal sized, maybe even a bit small for a guy.

How well do the KMC's hold up to splitting? And how thick are they, double-sleeved? I have the standard matte ultra pros (91 mm, i believe), and they split like crazy. I also have two sets of the japanese Ultra Pro sleeves, one of which held up very well, though the other one split like crazy after a month as well.

It's actually possible to double sleeve if you're using KMC perfect fits as the inside sleeve, but it's fairly difficult.

Unless they're putting out new KMCs, then I don't know how possible it is without severe difficulty. I was using KMC Perfect Fits as the inside sleeve, and they were only a TINY bit smaller than the Ultra Pro sleeve. I imagine I could double-sleeve with some difficulty, but I imagine it would cause quite the damage to the outer sleeve.
Comparing Ultra Pro sleeves now to ones I used back when I played in the late 90's/early 2000's, the sleeves now are definitely a lot less durable, failing after only a couple tournaments. My old Type 1 black deck that I built in 2001 has been in the same sleeves all that time and those sleeves have held up amazingly well. I imagine reducing the size of the sleeve would help with durability, but I'm not sure by how much. The sleeves with designs printed on them (Liliana, werewolves, etc) seem to be much more durable than the standard sleeves, though, but they are more expensive...

I noticed that the website only has the 66x91s listed:
http://www.ultrapro.com/index.php/cPath/33_83_52_113
Would that not signify that the 66x91 is the current mass-produced norm?
