Some friends of mine were talking about doing a draft where everyone brings their own packs. Any 3 packs from any set or combinations of sets. My question to you: if you were going to participate in a similar draft, what set(s) would you choose?
Also, I should mention that since it's a draft among friends (not at a store), we've slightly modified the way we do it. So we open the packs and draft as normal, then build our decks and have a tournament to rank everyone in some order. Then we take all rares and mythic rares out of our decks and lay them on the table. The winner gets to pick a rare, then the second person, etc. then whoever came in last picks twice, we go back up, the winner picks twice, back down, until all of them are taken. We keep all the uncommons and commons that we drafted unless people decide to trade stuff. We don't give out prizes to the winners, other than first pick at the rares (because we would have to buy the prizes).
EDIT: If you don't mind, please share your reasons for choosing the sets you do, in-case I (or someone else reading the thread) am not very familiar with the set. Thanks!

Well, it would be kinda fun to grief a little bit. Pick stuff that doesn't play well with others. I'm thinking maybe Mirrodin besieged, Eventide, and...Alara reborn. Good luck reading signals with that lot.
I'm not sure of pack sizes, but things like the random fifth edition or chronicles pack would also be pretty fun.

We hadn't really thought about pack sizes being an issue, but I suppose in somebody wanted to use a set with 8 cards per pack maybe we'd have them open two at once or something?
Also, I don't think any of us has enough money to buy sealed alpha packs, though I did suggest doing an alpha draft if one of us ever wins the lottery.
Asking people to remove quotes in their signatures is tyranny! If I can't say something just because someone's feelings are hurt then no one would ever be able to say anything! Political correctness is stupid.
Question; are you planning to have everyone pick their own 3 packs, or decide before hand the 3 types you will all use? If it's the former, go Unhinged, Unglued, Mercadian Masques, if it's the latter, go Unglued, Magic 2012, Saviors of Kamigawa.

the first one.
Also, I suppose I should have mentioned that we've also been talking about doing an unhinged draft at some point, but this would probably happen before then, so it's unlikely that we'll use unglued/unhinged for this one (though I am inclined to agree that it could be quite entertaining to combine them with other sets, especially if the rest of the group isn't expecting it)
We do this all the time at our lgs, and we find it fun everytime. There is no formula, jus bring 3 differen packs. If anyone uses an 8 card pack, they'll need two.
The best draft, however, is when you have every single pack be different. That creates some wild drafts for sure.
Players have typically chose their pack order, except forthe time we all agreed to have a chronicles pack, at that time we all mandatedthat chronicles was pack one.
If there's raredrafting at the end, you don't pick any set with cards worth anything. Given that, either go recent set with bad value (SOM, MBS, ISD) or a gimick set like unhinged/unglued.
Funny... me and my friends were just contemplating doing this, except finding the more old and obscure packs isn't the easiest thing......
If you want to take cards with value / cards you know how to use, it's pretty obvious that you should just pick your favorite sets.
If you just want to mess with everyone, which is significantly more fun, a lot of the suggestions so far have been quite good. I'd figure picking 3 sets with completely different mechanics would be amusing, and of course the un-sets are great.
Honestly I'd pick Core Sets... simply because it'd be easier to find some very useful utility cards that could help any deck. It would also avoid strange blocks that have too many "X matters" issues. I might very well pull a fantastic LOR card in a first pack, but if I needed a certain tribe to abuse it with... I might be out of luck when no Giants come my way.
I like the un-sets, just because you get so few chances to legitimately play them, and there's a whole lot of really, really fun cards available, and some can do some pretty strong stuff in the "real" world. You'd be amazed how often wordmail can be pretty potent, along with the even more fun and oddball ones.
My store used to do this once a month, but they stopped years ago, sadly. It was pretty awesome. Although, I remember that everyone almost always picked Darksteel as one of their packs and almost always opened it last, so there was this weird things where the first two packs were totally all over the place, and then the last pack was like six Darksteel and two random other sets.

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
I'd pick sets I like. If I had to pick 3, I'd go with Ravnica, Visions (probably hard to find because it's so old), and (just to mess with colors a bit) Eventide.
So I am doing one of these soon as well. I'm thinking that I'm going to go with 2x Eventide to give me some flexibility and massive bombs, and then one core set to help give me some support. Or maybe a removal heavy set like shards. Any other suggestions? I kinda want to win, as the prize is a Revised Booster Pack!

Like anyone would gamble losing a tarmagoyf to a raredraft. Limited is WAY to variant and luck based to raredraft big money prizes.
That's why there are pros who can consistently do well in limited tournaments, right? Limited is as skill based as standard.
Also, why would you specifically try to bring packs with low values? That just screws everyone in the draft.
