You made a bad trade, but you can't really blame anyone but yourself. If you have cards for trade, it really is your responsibility to know their value. Also, if you felt like you got good cards for it and was happy at the time, you can't really come back and say you got ripped off. I mean, I guess you can...
I've made some lopsided trades in other people's favor because I wanted the cards they had more than I wanted the card I was trading. It's a matter of perspective, really.

oh im not so salty as to go to the guy and demand my stuff back, im not a douche. and in my first line i did state totally my fault
just feels...icky, ive had that card for YEARS and never checked its pricing for some reason, never used it either.
Know the value of your cards....it's not hard to price check them before hand...if you don't ask impartial third parties. You really have no one to blame but yourself if you make a bad trade....I usually feel jipped when I have to trade cards under value for stuff I need for a deck I'm working in

Yeah, I understand what you mean. I wasn't trying to put you down or anything, but it definitely pays to do some research. Some of the older cards have sky-rocketed in the past couple of months.

it is time consuming tho, i have a lot of cards id have to pricecheck, and then keep it up to date /shudder
When I started playing around Revised, I traded a dual land for Leviathan, which at the time were the same price but a lot of players (including ones who just started), did not understand the playable value of certain cards. I mean 10/10 trample? I could win in two turns! LOL.
i refuse to trade with people i know that trade for value, it always seems my phone says somethings at 14 and theirs says its at 11 and the other way around. and if i dont know them or i can tell they are the type i dont even offer
It's pretty tough to keep track of everything all the time. Doable, but tough.
Best method seems to be looking up the price someplace like Starcitygames.com.
Barring that, ask the person you're trading what it's worth. Not volunteering information about a card's value is waaaay different than lying straight to somebody's face. If they're somebody you see on a regular basis, it gives you some measure of recourse.

The MTG community, expescially those who trade a lot, is infested with immoral scum who day dream about ripping off people like you. If you aren't willing to do what you have to in order to protect youself (which is understandable, it's a hassle and you may not want o put in the effort) then pick an online store and sell all your cards to the for store credit so you can buy cards you want for free later.
Complaining about getting ripped of in a MTG trade is like going to KFC and complaining the food tastes like chicken.
Remember the Tarmogoyf is only worth $100.00 dollars if you actually get to sell it for that much.
Most people use money as a way to standardize how people value cards.
You never used the goyf and you weren't planning on using it in the future anyways.
Therefore, I feel that it is good that you traded it for cards that you actually would use.
Even though you could have gotten more value out of the trade wouldn't you have hesitated to do the trade if you knew it was well worth $100?
I say don't worry about it too much. Enjoy the cards that you have to their fullest. In time I'm sure there will be a trade in your favor.
Look at this way, you traded 1 card that was doing nothing for you for $30 of cards that you're going to use. I am assuming you got the Tarmogoyf from a pack, rather than buying it since you didn't know the value. It's easy to look at the negative - the value you didn't get. But from another perspective, you turned a $4 pack into about $30. That's a good profit.
i cried...and vowed to never trade again...ill stick with ebaying the cards i dont want and using another site to buy the cards i want..
That's a sure way to lose value, too. eBay + PayPal fees eat around 12% of your auction total. Then you've got to consider shipping fees both to the buyer and from the store you're buying from. Also, Tarmogoyf can definitely be found for cheaper than $100. Just because the largest Magic dealer in the world can sell it for that much doesn't mean you can.
Anyway, my point is not to stop trading just because of one bad deal. Go back and mention to the guy you didn't realize your card was so valuable when you traded it to him. As long as you are nice about it, I know from experience that sometimes guys like that are willing to throw a few more cards your way. If he doesn't or if you never see him again, just consider it a life lesson.

It's attemts to justify ripping people off that soured me on ever trading again. He could have eBay;ed that Tarm for $75 EASY and gotten more than double the number of cards he wantd. He was taken advantage of by someone wlse who fradulently misrepresented the cards value to an uninformed trader.
Attitidues like that are why I never trade anymore. If I have a card worth anything, I sell it to a store for credit. If it's not worth anything and someone wants it, I just give it to them.
That's why you check your prices or ask others if said trade is fair.
something ill have to remember from now on to be sure. i had attended this shop on a semi regular basis a year or so back, this guy is a regular, id hate to be seen as a complainer.
any reason hes worth that much btw? seems like he wouldnt get that big in the end.
As far as the trade goes, Im generally of the opinion that the vast majority of magic players are trying to short change you when you make a trade. Usually its not that blatant, but outside of the people I regularly deal with at my local store everyone seems to be shaving a few dollars off value in their favor. People would always ask me what I value something at, and from my experience what they really wanted to know was what cards in my binder I was undervaluing.
If you step up to the trade tables and want to trade cards and do not know the values of your own cards then you're an idiot.
I assume anyone who has played the game for 4+ months or is old enough to drive is an adult and knows what they're doing when they want to trade.
If the guy told you he thought they were $30, then he's a ****ing liar. If you assumed it was $30 and were happy with the trade and he didn't lie to you about prices, then you're an idiot.
Outside of lying about prices, everything else is fair game.
Most importantly, it's not a $100 card. You can buy them online from dealers for less, and even cheaper on ebay, and your likelihood of sellign it was closer to $65 after fees than anything else. So you didn't 'lose' $70, you lost $35, if that helps.
Please try and make your point without resorting to personal insults.
lol i had a guy eyeing my wheel of fortune... asked me if i wanted to trade, i said really for what lol? its old and not even standard anymore. i said what could you give me? he gave me 4 inkmoth nexus'es 4 garruk wildspeaks 4 liliana vess'es 4 memorcides and a binder of rares i hadnt even looked through... at this point he overwhelmed me and i said dude keep the binder, ill take the vesses and the inkmoths if you want me to. he said thank you like 6 times. he left. someone from the club approached me and said "you know that was like a $200 card right? you pretty much gave it away" i said, wasnt worth anything to me before isnt now. LIE i went home immediatly and looked it up and bawwwwwwed
Take it as a lesson learned. Know your values before trading anyone. Recently I was looking through someone's trade binder and he actually had pages organized by range of values with a little slip of paper reminding him what the value range of the cards shown on a particular page was. More people should do this if they can't remember a card's value and don't have a smartphone.

You had a beta wheel of fortune and didn't know what it was worth?
How does anyone own a beta card and not take the time to find out what it is worth?
i have boxes and boxes just organized by color sitting in my trade box lol. untill a few months ago i had absolutley no care on the price of cards cuz i was livin on college refund ^ it was an old card with shisty art from B, thats all it was to me. i thought The Rack was valueble at the time lol

This guy wanted one of my cards, he offered me what i thought wa a good trade, it amounted to round 30 bucks worth of cards.

Goyf is played in every format he's legal in and is usually a 4/5 or 5/6 for 2 mana, so he's really good.
Sorry to hear about you getting ripped. It happens to everyone unfortunately, but usually only once.
