Anyone else think these were by far the best looking cards released? It's been since, what, Mirrodin since they really updated the card frames? Has there been any push or word to replace the current frames? It's been a long time.
I don't like them at all. I don't even like the design, it was one reason I quit at Mirrodin 1.0. Artifacts are still brown to me, and I like the old style way better. That being said, I probably have no idea of such things as I cannot stand fancy pink polo shirts and clinic white cars/laptops/smartphones/... .
The white text is pretty much what makes most of them (especially the black cards) look ugly. Now the future-shifted frames on the other hand, that I could actually get behind (plus I want to see a Khalni Hydra reprint in that frame). That frame in general is pretty nifty-looking, with the only real downside being you can't stagger the cards vertically and read the names and mana costs off the top. Plus it rocks the white text a lot better than the Planar Chaos timeshifted frame.
But nothing beats the very original frames (like around Beta etc). They had a distinct feel to them that can't really be beaten.
I prefer all but the planeshifted black frame, but what I really like are the futureshifted frames. Conceptually, that is. The futureshifted frame's idea of putting the mana cost on the left and a symbol in the upper left to denote card type is brilliant. It was just executed rather poorly. It looks "futuristic", and thus slightly out of place. It didn't help that the art also feels smaller in the futureshifted frames.
I'd really like to see WotC try again at something like the futureshifted frame layout but with more fantasy cues. The text box could be translucent (like Planeswalker text boxes are now), and by using smaller mana symbols than the original futureshifted cards they could make the art bigger. They could take out the border and gain about an extra half inch of height and width (making every card feel like an extended-art altered card) on every card, too. They could even give a nod to the game's original frames by having the "front" part of the frame have a slightly different shape depending on color. Red could get a swirl of fire with chunks of stone, black some bubbling muck around bones, blue a swirl of water with bits of ice, green might have a tree branch, white could get carved marble, artifacts could have brass and steel clockwork and pistons, and gold frames could have a swirling golden strand of mana with wisps of the component colors of the card.
It'd be sweet...
EDIT: and for the record, I loathe the original frames but can appreciate the idea that cards in the old frame felt more like spells than cards in the modern frame. I don't get that sense myself, but evoking that feeling with modern design sense seems like a good idea if WotC does such a change.

I would have been much happier with the Planar Chaos frames than with the ones we ended up getting. The PC frames are bolder, richer in color, have more interesting text boxes, and are more evocative of the old frames. At the same time, they free up as much space as the current designs and are easier to read. I prefer the original frames to anything else, but the PC frames would have been a great compromise between the old and the new.
Future shifted frames sucked.
To recap: (best) Original > Planar Chaos > Current > Future Shifted (worst)
The original card borders are the best, followed by current, planeshifted (they are more interesting than the modern borders but take up too much of the foreground on the card. Even though they look more beautiful, they are less elegant), then futureshifted. The Western fantasy-feel of the game died with the old borders. It's a shame because I really felt they were making progressions and reached a good brightness and hue with the Onslaught borders. I really hope they revert back to the olden days, but they won't because the old borders allow for less text space. The raw beauty of sets like Mercadian Masques and blocks like Tempest and Ice Age probably won't be relived any time soon since the glossiness of the newer (I say this even though they've been around since 2003) borders contrasts with the organic art of those cards.
I think the old cards look terrible, and that the Planar Chaos frames might look the best with a better text scheme. But I'm very happy with the modern frames.

I'm with you on the FS frames. I actually proxy my cards in that frame, as I prefer it to both the old and current ones.
I'm indifferent on the PC frames. It's a good way to make the cards look distinctively different while making them still seem like 'normal' magic cards. However, I do love the futureshifted borders, but that's mostly because they're so different from what I'm accustomed to, and don't make the card ugly.
As for old frames I think it's card specific. I think modern gold is orders of magnitude better than old gold. Artifacts are good either way, and I really love what they did with the latest SOFI promo. For plain old lands and coloured cards, I think the new frames are much cleaner, which I like.

I don't really like the original frames. I prefer Planar Chaos frames myself. I like the white words, made the cards easier to read IMO.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
I think the PC frames are the best ones. I love how they made each color's text box something original that beckons to the color, and I think the foils for these cards pop more than other frames.
For me, Planar Chaos > current >> original (I like the color borders, but I hate the font they used for names/card types) >>>>>>>> Future Sight (abomination)
I refuse to include old-bordered cards in a deck, no matter how well they would fit, because of how ugly they are. I like things to look clean, like they do now. Old cards are just grungy and unprofessional looking. I'm surprised we were into the 2000's before they were changed. Planar Chaos is a very nice design. I wouldn't mind seeing more of them
While the Future Shifted cards have a cool frame, it's not good-cool. It's fugly, non-functional cool. You can't print Cruel Ultimatum in it. If they had the mana in the top right still, I would be all for those frames being used for every card ever printed.
The planar shifted cards are also kind of ugly. Since the background color for all the text isn't the same (or very similar) color, it's hard to look at multiple and focus easily.

I'd be more than happy to take care of those ugly/unprofessional looking cards for you
Personally I care more if a card is black-bordered vs. white bordered than what fram it is in, but I'd rate the old border first, maybe it's nostalgia, but I liked the way the cards looked with it. The planar chaos/new borders are tied in my eyes, no huge preference there, but I don't like the look of the future shifted cards, just too much of a departure for me. For a while I wouldn't include those in my decks for exactly that reason.
I like the future shifted frames the best as well. They actually made MTG look like a modern TCG instead of one begun in 1993.
I think the frames we have now (and the planar chaos time shifted frames) are actually quite ugly. We just grew used to the look. Anything begins to look alright if you look enough at it. The future shifted frames may be bad on some MTG players' eyes because they are so divergent from what we have now or what we ever had in the past.
I didn't like the PC frames at all. They were incredibly jarring in their contrast to the normal frames. There is such a thing as too much colour, and these overstepped the line.
FS frames were great, I like them a lot. Whether I'd feel the same after being accustomed to them over a long period of time I'm not sure, but they had a clean, modern look to them.
I prefer the old frames to the new, because there was simply more flavour to them. The different textboxes for each colour what what I enjoyed, it spoke about the colour's individual identity just as much as the mechanics did.
Also I prefer the T: Add WUBRG to your mana pool basic lands to the big symbols. By a long way.

This is something that I find most players don't even think about. Blue had that watery/airy background, black looked like it was written on old parchment or something, red had that hard beveled edge, white had that stony/marble-y background, and green looked like wood grain.

I think every color looks much better, clearer and cleaner with the timeshifted look.

I have a feeling we wouldn't get along in a Standard game with me slinging Beta Lightning Bolts and Ice Age Pyroclasms and stuff. :<
