U is the first letter they don't share. It may not be the best option, but it is the established one.
That, and L was for Land.

If you look at test cards for Beta, they were already using the abbreviation there. Personally, I think it's because the U looks like a blue mana symbol (tear drop).
Blue is U because that's the way they wanted it to be, it's been established that U is blue, so therefore U is blue.
I really couldn't imagine or picture it any other way, B for Black sounds preferable to any other alternative, and U works just fine for Blue, it's graphically similiar to it's symbol, so it works fine.
I also like to imagine that he has a rotating torso (like a metallic graft that fuses his upper and lower body together), so he can spin all around, leveling everything within 20ft of him to rubble.
Beat me to it. I have one of those laying around cause I was drinking and thought I might want to try it, now it's just for the laughs.

Odds of pulling a JtMS from a WWK pack: 1:80
Odds of pulling any specific rare in 5th Edition: 1:133
So, on average, 1 JtMS every 2.222 boxes or 1 Bird of Paradise every 3.694 boxes. Yeah, I'll take my odds with Mythics, they are easier to get than old rares.

From MaRo: The second letter for both colors is "L". As I showed above, "L" means land. The powers that be wanted to use the first letter whenever possible, so land got to keep "L." Black's third letter is "A." A is reserved for artifacts. This meant that Blue had "U" and "E" and Black had "C" and "K." (In the early days before Wizards spelled it out, incidentally, some players used "K" for black.) Why did we end up going with U? Basically because it was earlier in it's word than Black's "C" or "K."
There you go, OP.

"...because without beer, things do not seem to go as well."
Blue is before black on the color wheel: shouldn't blue get first choice?

I'm well aware that blue and black share many letters. My question is why blue had to choose the alternate letter instead of black.

WBKRG just sounds like a radio station in the 70's...
Not to mention K = Black could make some cards a little awkward for example Bridge from Below.
