I've been having a bit of a problem after a recent FNM, and I want to know what other people's take on the situation is.
So, there is a person that I have known at my local store for quite some time now, and I do chat with him from time to time, but I really don't hang out with him very often. At the most recent FNM, we play in the final round, and over the course of the round I end up beating him 2-1, which ended up being relevant for prizes since it meant I got 3rd, the last place that got prizes.
After losing, he, for lack of a better word, just flips out, takes the rares out of his deck, throws the rest on the table and says the night was a waste of time. I try to tell him good game, and not to worry because he still made his money back, since he got two rares, one foil, that added up to the price of the draft, but he just says the cards aren't worth anything and storms off.
What makes me mad is the fact that, despite playing since Odyssey, I think that I am seen by the local game store as a lower level player since I only really come for limited and never really sweep the tables but usually go 2-1. It bugs me that he flips out for not only losing, but seemingly losing to someone who he perceives as worse than him, and it pisses me off that he would take it as such a big insult to lose to me when we do talk while we're there. It just seems very condescending, and it makes me never want to be paired with him again.
My question is how do you guys deal with people like this? How do you cope with seeing someone flip out like that, and feel like it's because they think they are better than you?
Angry idiots gonna be angry idiots. Most stores have someone who thinks they're pro, and get mad when they lose. Just be calm and collective. Also, it seems to me that you're a little insecure about what people think of you. Skill isn't determined by how long you've been playing. No offense whatsoever, but let that go and just play the game for what it is, and enjoy it.
Just ignore it and let him rage. Getting pissed about douchey behavior from other players is a waste of energy, its just not worth it. As for the skill level thing I'm kind of in the same boat. I win more than I lose but I'm not one of the top players either. I personally love it because when I do beat one of the top players its like I got to win more. I really like it when I can help lower the rating of good players who are also douchey.
I just ignore them. Even when my friend told me that I didn't deserve to win, I didn't make it worse by saying something like "Well my deck was constructed better than yours and that's what it came down to". After that happened I saw the same expressions on this other guy I beat and I could tell that he was thinking that he deserved to win. This same guy always throws a fit when he loses, so now that I know what he's thinking I don't respect him anymore. There are perfectly good reasons to be mad about in Magic, like getting too little or too many lands, but when you have bad sportsmanship then that's crossing the line.
I'm in the same boat as you, I win plenty of times but I don't consider myself a top player. This is a game where someone with less skill can beat someone better. If you don't like it, tough. Go play something more consistent like VS System or even better, Chess.
Depending on if they are being disrespectful towards me or not determines how I respond to them... If they're being rude or say something snarky then I normally shovel it in their face, for instance:
Enemy: You got so lucky with that top deck (in a mean tone).
Me: Well the cards are in my deck, I'm going to draw them sometime... go cry about it in the corner.
Enemy: I can't believe that, you misplay all the time I should have won.
Me: Yeah that's pretty bad how I'm such a bad player and still beat your a$$...
Me after offering a gg congrat and being snubbed: Awwwww is your butt hurt?
But sometimes people just get annoyed at losing. Even I get upset at myself if I misplayed and gave the game away. I'm not really in the mood to talk to people after feeling like that. I guess it just depends on the situation. Normally you don't know why someone is upset. Maybe they really wanted to do well that night, or misplayed, or maybe they thought they should beat you... The point is, don't let it get to you, just let them blow off steam and at the same time don't let them disrespect you.
this is one of those situations that a swift kick in the johnson would solve.
no but really, when people revert back to acting like 5 year olds i just laugh at them. to their face or not. do your best to not entertain foolishness.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
Its the same while playing halo reach and you face those 12 year olds whose vocabulary consists of a bunch of four letter vulgar words. Once you kill them, they rant on and on.
So the best idea here is to continue to kill them for some good laughts
Just like any bully/Mental case you need to square your shoulders, look him in the eye and tell him to settle down. be confident in yourself when dealing with that type. They get off on tantrums. No need to fight or be rude, but let them know that your in the room, and your not going to take their attitude. We use it in Sports psychology all the time. Same principle.
I would use it to your advantage. It's so much fun to put these type of annoying players on tilt even before your match starts because it will be sitting in the back of their brain that they lost to you last time.
At the store am at, its weird because everyone is generally nice but some people get FURIOUS when they lose. I only started playing FNM for the past few months. As you can see ive been playing green. Im seen as a more "noob" player because I dont play control "rolls eyes" I do, however, usually top 8 every week.
For example one week i was in an elves mirror (he had vengevine, and I didnt) and i blew him out of the water both matches to win 2-0. hes a player whom is experienced but hates losing. I extend my hand to shake and say GG but hes goes "not really".
Honestly if the player who rages does it to everyone, shrug it off. its not you, its them. If they want to look immature, let them.
It bothers me when they do it to YOU especially because of a lack of respect for you. Like if he beats you it was skill, but if you beat him. Pure luck. ITS A CARD GAME. luck is on both sides people! People improve. Jace isnt auto win. Ugh.
Overall. just pat yourself on the back for showing them whose boss. dont worry about it. I have found alot of MTG players to have anger issues.

I would take the "Chuck Norris approach" to playing MTG. After he side kicks his opponent sending him flying in the air, crashing into a glass window or display case, he doesn't look back - he is stone cold and stolid.

Just be polite. Your going to get match up against people from time to time that are rude or have poor sportsmanship. The best thing to do about it is just play the game. At least in my expedience for every rude magic player there are at least 5 pleasant ones in the room.

Random Opponent: Playing against 12 Post Feels like trying to win in Yugioh with no super secret rares.
After losing, he, for lack of a better word, just flips out, takes the rares out of his deck, throws the rest on the table and says the night was a waste of time. Random question. If the cards aren't worth anything, why'd he bother taking them out of the deck first?
But seriously the game is designed so that it's possible for a 'low-level' player to win against a pro player every now and again. If he can't understand that, he has no right to be playing.
Anyone who gets mad at FNM, no matter what happened, needs to chill out. There's absolutely no excuse for going to a casual tournament you might not win and getting mad if you don't win. Even if it means losing the match for first place because you had to triple mulligan in the third game. No excuse for it.
Huh...I was expecting a lot more responses akin to this:
'Well, I'd just drag him him out of the store by his hair and proceed to beat the living hell out of him. I'm a 3rd degree blackbelt/Jui Jutsu master/MMA fighter/6'5, 215 lbs of pure muscle, so no one messes with me...'
People on these forums always seem to love letting everyone know they are complete badasses.
Jace on the other hand gives you card advantage for no life cost. On the contrary, Jace can actually take some damage for you. I'd think that makes him better than Arena.

I'm proud of you guys :crying:.
Well, everybody at my FNM is a third degree blackbelt/ Brazilian Jui Jutsu master with gun permits. It's like a freaking nuclear standoff in there!
Seriously though. Just keep your cool. Children will behave childishly; no need to sink to their level. Though I have been known to snicker at this type of performance because, in the end, it really is a joke.

Uh, I'm badass enough to know that they're not worth ruining my career. And that they're not worth going to jail for, for just being a douchebag. They're the type that will throw a fit when they don't get something they want, and will threaten anyone that stands up to them. It's better to avoid unnecessary conflict. Now if he was assaulting someone, then yeah I'd have to do something. It's also important to know their skills, strengths and weaknesses, and if they're carrying a dangerous weapon. Even if you think you're stronger than someone you don't pick a fight with them :|

I'd honestly say "Cool story bro" and give him a thumbs up. Or just walk away if he refused to shake hands, good game etc. All you really should do.
Yeah, it's unfortunate that you can't control or change how people act/feel. "Cool story bro" is the next best thing you can do if you're not doing the Kanye thing that was posted earlier.

unfortunately there are guys like this at every store. getting matched up with them sucks, but you get through it and enjoy the next match. i don't banter, i don't play any casual games with them, but i'm polite. sometimes you can get some joy out of beating them (i do this without the gloating :p) but either way you just deal with it and get on with enjoying the rest of your matches. sometimes there's enough guys at a store like this to make it not worth going and that's sad, but there isn't much you can do about it.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
I try to say "good game", whether it was a good game or not. There's occasionally some people who flip out and start screaming about topdecks and misplays.
