In going over some cards, I happened to spot something rather clever in the flavor text of Reassembling Skeleton: "...you'll never see the same skeleton twice." This is...actually true in-game; whenever it's "reassembled", it isn't the exact same object it was before, regardless of card. Huh. Well-played, writers, well-played.
I remember having a similar revelation last year with M10's Lightning Bolt. Can anyone else thing of clever moments regarding flavor text that took a little time to percolate in their minds?
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
Anyone not get Sleep immediately? I was pleasantly surprised when I realized the flavor text was not about the tapdown effect, but was even more accurately describing the untap clause.
I don't think I fully realized Quag Sickness the first time I read it.
My favorite was/is Cinder Pyromancer. When I first read the flavor-text I thought nothing of it, but it dawned on me that the flavor text had a deeper meaning. Setting the world on fire - causing suffering - is part of the Pyromancer's immortality project. By "never grow cold", he literally means that he will never gutter (burn out) and die.
Personally, i think they are really cheesey and should have been different.
I never noticed Assault Strobe's before. If we're looking at them as a pair/incomplete cycle, then I agree with you.
But Hex has something more in that the flavor text (6 words long) is in keeping with the 6 theme on the card (Name, CMC, targets). Allegedly, they wanted the hand in the art to have six digits, also. lol
It's widely known that [EDH] is very broken. Building a superdeck is quite easy. So what defines you as a player is [...] how you show restraint and creativity while still remaining a competitive player and a good sport.
the only problem with urza is that he is an oldwalker, so its abilities would be like:
+3: remove up to ten target permanents from the play
-2: win the game
-8: kick your opponents in the face, then win the game
starting loyalty: 100
Staring at the art makes me annoyed they keep ditching Rebecca Guay.
Indeed. She's among my favorite artists, period. Why they couldn't work some of her art into a core set, at least, or an alt-art card for an auxiliary product, is just beyond me.
I wasn't really referring to jokes though, guys. I mean sure, most are clever and even funny, but I was wondering more about flavor texts like those of the cards in my original post. Are there any really inspired ones that you actually didn't notice until later?

I've always liked the flavor text on Academy Ruins which describes the history of Tolarian Academy's impact on the game, and how now it's turned into a card that just sits in binders.
Axegrinder Giant actually has a double meaning, partially given from the flavor text. Grinding an Axe can refer to holding a grudge for a long time, on top of the giant literally grinding an axe.

I know there are definitely some like these I've encountered, I remember yelling "aha" midgame, but I can't think of them by name :/

Sorry, I played lots of M11 :).

Read the text, then stare at the art for about a minute...

Lots of cards from Time Spiral block had hidden references to older cards. Some of my favourites were Stormcloud Djinn(Electric Eel), Thick-Skinned Goblin(Keeper of Kookus) and the super-cool Coral Trickster(flavor text is an acronym of 'twiddle', the card that this creature's ability emulates).

Wow. This is one I could have gone without noticing. Lmao.
Hahha, that one's good but I think we were talking about the intentionally clever flavor text, not the accidentally hilarious.
