I just found out today that the LGS in the town where I go to school does their FNM's via limited draft (which I love), however, I also found out that they charge $18 to draft, with no guarantee for a prize pack unless you place. Is it me, or does this seem a little high?
Mine does $15 per draft and they normally place to the top 16 with a combination of store credit to top 8 and packs to 9th-16th. Mind you they always get 32+ people, so that has a lot to do with it.

"Of course you should fight fire with fire. You should fight everything with fire." —Jaya Ballard, task mage
I guess 18 isn't incredibly high considering player counts aren't through the roof there as far as I know (alot of broke college kids, like me, can't afford to draft every week). I think I'll still get in as many as I can, though, because I just started playing again last week and need to rebuild my collection as best as I can.
Used to be 15, but now it's 12$. Keep your packs, Top X get prizes depending on turn out*. It's a fair deal, since you are practically paying for 3 packs with the tax, and you're having a good time doing so.
* People cultivate in a particular card store in Houston out of the couple scatter at the SouthWest Houston area. One store that devotes to Warhammer has little turn out, one devoted to Yugioh/Pokemon low turn out, and even sometimes the "Magic" store has seen low turn out for some reason.

Where do you mean in Houston, if you don't mind me asking? I go to Skirmish Games which is technically Deer Park, but it's still closer than 3rd Coast Cards(the only other "real" magic shop I know of). On topic though, Skirmish is 13$ for a draft with a "top 4" that always splits because we usually don't finish till after midnight, the prize is the fnm promo and store credit usually around slightly more than the cost of the draft.
My local shop does MtG nights every tuesday and friday each week, with 1 day being draft and 1 day being standard. The night that is draft and the night that's standard are rotated every week (one week tuesday night will be standard, next week friday night will be standard, and so on). Standard is always $5 for 4 rounds of swiss and draft is always $14 for 3 packs and 3 rounds of swiss (you get to keep the cards you drafted of course). There's always prize support for placing in the top 50% (at least 2 booster packs of your choice, more boosters & foil promos for doing better) and on friday nights everyone gets at least one booster pack for a prize no matter how poorly they place. You can come in last place and still get a booster pack on fridays, which makes it a great day to test out new standard decks
$18 with marginal prize support... it's horrid. By any chance, do you live near North VA?
However, in SCG in Roanoke, they do drafts after FNM for $9, with prize support, and for each prize pack you got from FNM, which you use for the draft, you get $3 off.
But it's single-elim, so...
However, I don't really do drafts, because I'd rather play a CHEAPER format! Stan...dard...
Hmm. There was a topic about this recently. about 3 pages long.
Well anyways, I draft at two stores, one is 6 dollars for draft, with 2 packs per person in prize pool, 4-3-2-2-1-1-1-1. The other store is 6 dollars for draft as well, with 2 dollars store credit per person in the prize pool. 8-4-2-2 is how that one pays out. St. Louis btw.
$10 to play for the night with no prize support, a pretty good excuse to rarehunt
$15 to play and get a pack for every 2 wins + Top 8 prize support
$20 for a pack every win and top 8
$15 for 3 packs you keep the commons/uncommons and then splay out the rares and foils then take turns choosing. Pretty good value. Occasionally get a promo with it.
I don't like the idea of laying out rares.
If you open something cool in a draft, you shouldn't have to win in order to keep it.

I support the idea of redrafting the rares like this at the end of the night, with first place taking first pick, second place second pick, etc, as it completely stops the idea of "rare drafting" unless its either in your colors, or a must hate card. It also gives people a good reason to actively try and do better every time, and learn basic drafting strategy, color signals, etc.
With that being said, my local shop charges $15 to draft, with prize support for 1st and 2nd.

Except, if someone is not good enough at drafting, and they're lucky enough to open a Gideon, why should they have to give up that just because they weren't good enough to get first place?
I believe in rare drafting. If someone wants to take as many rares as they can, let 'em! They most likely won't do well, so the people who didn't rare draft will get a chance to get the prize packs. It's not like they're gonna get any money rares outside of the packs they open. Forcing people to give up money rares that they open just because of some stupid--I'm going to say it, somewhat socialist--policy is just, well, stupid.
If it was your first time to a draft and you try your best, but lose due to inexperience, are you really going to draft again if all you got out of it are Magmaw, Baneful Omen, and Gravitational Shift? I certainly wouldn't, and I'd never go back to that store again.
$10, and we play for picks out of the rares. I like redrafting rares because it lowers the price and I can't open money. When I draft with friends I take first almost everytime, but even if I get more packs I open nothing while the guy a few places behind me cracks Baneslayer or Gideon or something. However, I can see the appeal in keeping everything you draft.
This varies however, with a 2 vs 2 (individual games) or 3 vs 3, where losing team pays and winning team takes all, and the winning team find out a way to redistribute rares.
You gotta be kidding? If my LGS said we had to pool our rares at the end, I would:
1: walk out WITH my rares, and NEVER spend another cent at that store again.
2: Notify WotC/DCI, as this does not sound very kosher to me.
On top of that, suggesting that the person who won get first pick is utterly ridiculous. The only way I could see even possibly thinking of rare splitting would be to pull out all rares/mythics when the packs are cracked, THEN diceroll for pick positions.

The idea is that it supports skill in drafting by encouraging players to draft the best they possibly can.
Before this turns into some personal moral/ethical whos right and whos wrong, I'll just say this. Everyone knows before they sign up whats going on, if they don't want to do it that way, they can either not draft, or try to launch another 8 man with whatever prize structure they want, which some players have done, our shop is able to hold 2 FMN's a week.

Do you go to Jiffy Photo and Baseball Cards in Brick by any chance?
Both stores near me are 10 bucks to draft, you keep the cards, and 8/4 splits for the top 2 in each 8 man pod.

Lame.
I am petitioning to get players to stop complaining about mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause.

On a side note, Standard is $5 and 5-pack sealed (with similar support) is $18.
