I'm 22 been playing Magic since right before Mirrodin came out.

didn't notice the 2nd part of the question. From what I see I am probably within the top 5 oldest at my shop. Not a big shop but I have seen the age like 10 - 40 sometimes.
Don't be afraid of younger players, as long as they are respectful and know the game then they are cool in my book. I kinda like teaching some kids to play as long as they listen and ask politely and understand when I'm busy.
i think its around 15 to 24. i personaly started out in 6th grade and i tought my sister to play when she was in 4th

the general age of players that I've seen has been in the 13 to 25 set (I'm 19, myself). granted, I've seen people as old as 50 play MTG, and even older playing other card games (I recall this very old couple I saw playing yugioh. was kind of smile-worthy).
no age is too old to do something you enjoy, honestly.
Take your monoblack deck, then set aside 14 swamps. Add 4 Creeping Tar Pits, 4 Darkslick Shores, 4 Drowned Catacombs, and 2 Jwar isle Refuge and add 4 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Your monoblack deck is instantly better. Better yet, drop those refuges, throw in some islands and some mana leaks, and lo and behold, you're now playing a real deck. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of competitive M:TG.
I too think it is between about 13 and 27 (-ish). although there are definitely outliers.... for example, AlmostGrown and I are apparently both sixteen, and have been playing since Scourge and Prophecy respectively; that puts us both well on the low end of the age bell curve of players at ages 10 and 7....

I hav e been playing since 1995 at the age of 14 16 I am now 31 and still have most of my cards from when I started. Much to the dismay of my wife my collection has just about hit the 750k card point. It took us a truck just to haul my cards when we moved.
EDITED: I have slept a lot in the last 15 plus years LOL I do remember it was high school and a guy in my FFA group taught me and gave me a deck with a beta goblin king and a Shivan Dragon.

Although always playing a deck I think is fun, I'm also always trying to win the tournament.

Glad to see some old-timers here!!! I'm 39 and I've been playing since Unlimited. Mostly casual with a friend (also 39) and his son (12). We're planning on hitting the Worldwake prerelease - I haven't been to one of those since Onslaught

Ray Thiel (1964-2007) - the man who showed me more wonderful games & gaming sessions than I ever dreamed possible... you ran out of hit points too young, my friend.
Sometimes I wonder about age or if ya should be self conscious LOL.
Collected them in the 1990s with no clue how to play, the instructions were awful - had some fallen empires, 4th ed, Ice Age...lost interest not knowing anyone and not knowing what to do. Just picked up a few packs at rite aid and their stock was loaded with rares and got into them again, 30 now. Nice to reminisce and actually know what to do via youtube and wizards finally including a decent instruction manual...or an improvement at the least. You need a legal team to play this game it seems LOL.
Anyway age wise, from what I've seen (just played my first few games at a local tourny, won the first, then lost four in a row)...
I'd say 75 percent in the 18-25 range. 10-15 percent middle school with maybe a very young outlier. Then another 10-15 percent about 30 or above with an occasional middle aged outlier every blue moon.
I started play a long time ago. I'm 40 now. I started playing in 1994, when I was 21.
i've spent substantial periods being inactive over those years, only for a year or two, before I'd come back.
But, I never lost the love of the game. I get some people older than me who complain about the new cards and strategies. Not me, I love them. Because it makes the game interesting, and challenging.
Edit; last tournament I was at, the guy i was playing introduced me to his son, who was about 17.
20 is probably the median age I've seen of players.
I think you're being pretty stuck up though. 16 year olds really aren't that bad. Hell, I bet you were one not too long ago.
It's gotta be way older than... something close to 30.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
I'm 20 right now and I started playing MTG when I was 12 back in the original Ravnica block. I think 20 is relatively young in MTG playing years. There are a few regulars at my LGS that have families but still manage to show up at the weekly FNMs.
I'm 19, but most of my friends who play are in their mid-late 20's and early 30's.
One of them has a 2 year old little girl who looks and acts just like me. I already told him he'll be screwed in about 10 years. lol
I play in a college area, with roughly about 200+ magic players divided between 3-4 major stores, and then 3-4 minor ones. The youngest I've seen play is likely elementary school children, and the oldest would be people in their late 50's to 60's.
I am 27 now and I started up again at 25. I mostly play legacy now once a week on Saturday afternoon. The age group is 21 to 55 with the average being around 28 I think.
The EDH group I am is is a bit old on average. Most of the main group is 30-36 I think and engaged or married. There are a few younger guys there who are finished up college as well.

Modern or Legacy it's usually mid-20's and up.
I'm almost positive that's a financial thing.
LOTS of mid-20's to 30 year old players though, so don't worry about being "too old".
