Started when I was in 6th grade, and now I'm 20 years old and a junior in college and still playing.
The general age group at the store I go ranges from junior high schoolers, (i.e. 7th or so grade) to college students (Seniors or so at the most). And no matter what the age, they're all pretty decent players at the least. Most are well-tuned in Legacy, which really is great to see.

My fnm is usually about 20 to 25 people, the majority are between the ages of about 19 and 30. A few younger, a few older. I think I'm the oldest "regular" at 41, but there are a few in the mid 30's.
27 here. The average range that I tend to see at most shops (I play Legacy predominantly, so bear that in mind) is 20-30, with a sprinkling of the old seasoned vets (40+).
In recent memory, I've only played against one kid younger than 18.
If you prefer to play an older crowd, I'd look at Legacy as it does tend to be an older crowd on average. Plus it's a very healthy format with a ton of viable decks to choose from.
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
me and my play group are all around 16-18, but my one friends dad still plays non-competativly and he's in his low 50s. So there is no real age cap on this game.
I'm 19, and I'm just underneath the rough median age for our store (mainly early 20's). I have seen a few people play who were 40+, but it's pretty rare.
I'm 19. No, I wouldn't worry about facing a bunch of 16-year-olds or younger. This game is a little too complicated and money-intensive for the younger players.
Then again, I guess the same could be said for Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I dropped that when I was 14 because it seemed a little juvenile to have going on into high school.
i'm 30, most other competitive players are early-mid 20's.
you'll find more younger kids, or people with less money ususaly drafting.
at least at my store.

1.) Anyone who thinks cancel is viable should be shot. in the face. with a hammer.
2.) You misunderstand, what I was suggesting was the total exclusion of Spellstutter Sprite, because it just isnt that good anymore.
3.) Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
The general age in my main shop is 22-50. Heavy around 30-40, most of us started playing back in the mid 90s. The other shop I go to also has the same age range, between 20-40 with some older people. Sure there are kids, but they keep to themselves, and get rolled over by us older players =)
I'm 17 and I am by far the youngest player on the store, the rest of them are on their middle 20s, It's indeed difficult to find someone of my age playing around here.
I'm 26 years old. Play with a couple of guys that's the same age +/- a few years. I guess a four year difference in age is much more evident between a 16 year old guy and a 20 year old, then let's say me and one that's 22. Or 30 year old.
I'm 14. There are a few other people around my age, one or two younger, and most are in their 20's. There's one guy who comes fairly regularly with his son, who is younger than me, and his daughter, who is probably in her 20's, while he is probably in his 40s or 50s. We have a pretty diverse crowd.

I'm 36. Started playing around Alpha, got in and out of Magic MANY times... Yes, I sold all my Alpha and Beta cards back to my local shop for about 150 bucks... I had almost an entire set... including multiples of the power 9.
<kicks self in the hind end, once again>
So many times I've gotten in and out of Magic. I will never do it again (get OUT and SELL, that is).
I'll always keep my cards from now on, because I have family that likes to randomly pick up and play.
So, now, I have an 11 year old boy and an 8 year old daughter that both like to play. My son, more so, but both are intelligent kids, and as we know, this game lends itself to the smarter human being. My wife thinks we're all big giant nerds for even liking the game, but she knows not what she says! (she's super cool, she kids us, not serious about the nerd thingy)
And now, with way to much said in answer to the question. I'll stop.

The wife still thinks I'm crazy for still playing Magic. She doesn't play.
Wait, what do you mean that wasn't the question?
