General age of MTG players

  • #1
Hey I'm thinkin about picking up MTG again. Used to play it when I was 12 and sucked. How old are the people usually at magic card night at the local card store. I'm 20 and really don't wanna hang out with 16 year olds all day. Am I too old to play?

Also can someone link me to a rule book for MTG. I don't even sort of remember the rules anymore.

Twenty is pretty far from being too old to play. Most people I personally know in the game are older than that.
And I wouldn't worry too much about hanging with teens in your card shop - from my experience, maturity and biological age aren't really that much related.

17 and too poor to really play T2; so I spend my Fridays either drafting or being ridiculed for playing Naya Allies, while wishing SOMEBODY in this area wanted to play Legacy
Seriously, bro. Let's get some trades going.

If a survey was done at each shop to see the most popular age groups, my guess would be that the most popular one would be the 16-25 age group.

I'm one of those old weirdos. I'm 37, I was 22 when I started playing.

The beauty of the game is that you're never too old.
This year at gencon I was teaching people to play magic and a grandmother was there with her 2 grandchildren. Her grandchildren were off with there father and the grandmother was walking around looking to do something and I said to her "would you like to learn to play magic the gathering". She immediately said "ohh no, I would never understand it". I said, " just give it a try it's not that hard". She though why not and sat down.
After about 6 games she fully understood most of the game and she was hooked. She had to leave to find her grandchildren and as she was leaving I gave her the 2 learn to play decks we were using (mostly crap cards, vizzedrix FTW) and a few of the promo cards we gave out, she thanked me and left.
The next day she broght her son-in-law and the 2 grandchildren to learn to play and they all learnt. Later on in my brake I saw the family and they were wanting to buy some magic stuff and they asked for what they should get and I recommended M10 pre-cons. They all got a a different deck and slips and I gave them wotc website adress to find out where to play and the full rules there.
I hope there still having fun.
Also I'm 16 and I find I'm a nice mature player that has fun and jokes around at any level of play.

20 is probably the median age I've seen of players.
I think you're being pretty stuck up though. 16 year olds really aren't that bad. Hell, I bet you were one not too long ago.

In my area it's actually 13- (I think the oldest guy is 50+)

Hell the game says 13+ it shouldn't matter.

That's like asking the Male to Female Ratio which in my area is 9-2

14 here. My brother is 22 and plays Magic. 5+ of his old classmates (21-22 as well) play Magic.

    I am 20. I play.

Most of the sixteen year old that player are more mature than most of of the 30 somethings that don't.

I'm 20, and I'm the youngest in my area (about 15-20 players). Many of the other players are ~35 year old family fathers, nothing weird about that in my opinion.

25 (almost 26!) here...I'll be honest, I prefer to play older folks compared to high school/college folks...more to talk about? I don't know, just a personal preference. There's an older guy (came with his Grandson) I've been paired up against in the last several Prerelease events who's my personal hero...rockin' the Santa beard/suspenders/penny loafers and slingin' cards.

By the way, if you want to avoid playing with large groups of pre-teens and teens, the best way is to avoid Standard events probably.
I don't think there's a statistic research made about this, but at least around my area it seems quite clear that Standard is usually mostly played by young players, while older formats are usually mostly played by older people.

I started playing MtG back in college in 1995. I was 21. Back then there was an older gentlemen (50-ish) who played. We used to refer to him as the "weird old guy" as the next closest player in age was late 20's at most.

Well I'm now 35 and still playing and loving the game. I realized at some point last year that I'm now the "weird old guy." Grin

I play in a college town so the average age of our player base is around 22. We have a few teenagers who play and couple more "old guys" like me. Most importantly we recently gained a dad who plays MtG who taught his young son and daughter and now they all play in tournaments.

The average in my area is like 20 year olds in college. Also, I don't consider 30 year olds to be creepy old guys. You guys need more self-esteem.

I'm 23. The group of people I playtest/ PTQ/ cube/ draft with is diverse- from 17 to 30(+?). Look at the top 8 profiles.
    The ages of the top 8 players from worlds are: 27, 27, 22, 23, 22, 22, 33, 22.
    An average age of 24.75.

    Top 8 from PT austin?: 22, 36, 24, 29, 29, 23, 20, 22.
    Average? 25.625.

Is 20 too old to play magic? I'd say it's a good time to start.

You're never too old to play. I'm turning 29 and I'm not even close to the oldest player at my LGS. The beauty of the game is that there's no age limit, as long as you know the basic rules you can have a grand old time.

I can't wait to defeat my grandchildren with my Broodmates and rub it in their faces Smile Of course if the current trend continues, they'll be playing with bigger, cheaper, more powerful creatures and my Broodmates will look like a Raging Goblin.

I'm 37 as are all my friends. Our FNM runs from 12 (who took first place 2 weeks ago) to 38 (my friend). Most are mid 20s, I believe.

So, 20 is FAR from being too old to play...FAR from it.

Not trying to deny this statement at all, but here where I live it's the complete opposite :p I really prefer playing with older cards (Invasion and older), while the other people in my playgroup, all 25+, all play standard and every time I play with them they ask me when I'm going to build a standard deck. It's probably because even though they're all a fair bit older than me, I have been playing Magic the longest. And I don't find casual T2 to be interesting, give me some Fact or Fictions!

The store I go to has ages between 12 and upper 40's, and occasionally older. I don't think there is an age to stop playing Magic. Most of the people I draft with are adults.
  • #23
magic is 16 years old game, so the old players are like 40 now, noone says they must stop playing , keep going as long as you can enjoy it, does sex have age limit ?: P (well actually it has but whateves)

Seriously this thread needs a poll...I think it's already been done at least once before. It seemed to me at the time that there was an early peak around 16-18 and another one between 22-25. So I guess a lot of ppl in college either pick it up before they go to college, or they pick it up later while they're in college. But I can't for the life of me figure out why the 18-22 ppl don't represent the biggest chunk. Maybe they're too busy studying, or in denial, or just don't have time to vote ;P
