I can't imagine very many people use chat programs to play magic. For one, it would be very hard to maintain the game-state, especially if something was assumed on one side, and forgotten on another side (Don't you remember I have an ancient grudge in my graveyard?).
The other problem is that there are no rules in place so there'd be no guarantee that the other person isn't cheating. Also every time you had a lucky top-deck you'd be accused of cheating even if you didn't.
If you want to play magic online with other people, I recommend Magic Workstation or Magic Online. It's a lot closer to the actual game.

well, its automaticly assumed that if your going through the trouble of playing over aim, then its for playtesting purposes only, and cheating wouldn't benefit either side as it would be "inaccurate" results.
as for remembering everything, it can be difficult. a solution could be having all of your opponents cards in a stack, and when they play the card, you search for it and put it on the feild/graveyard/etc. notepad works good too :).
I made a little stand with a coat hanger for my webcam and use it to play on aim and yahoo with my friends all the time when we cant get out to play. It is just like playing across from a real person. I think it is better then MWS or any of those
I play on msn or aim with my close friends. I usually keep a note pad file open next to the calculator for life total and game state notes so I can jot down what's out in play, cards in hand etc. We also usually abreviate some things to speed it up. UUD- untap, upkeep, draw with a pause in case someone has a reaction, then we backup real quick if need be. Trying to get the cameras positioned and working on both ends is more hassle than it's worth really. At the end of the day, there's no reason for any of us to cheat- it's a casual game of magic over the internet. It's fun, it means nothing, and I think we all managed to deal with our wounded egos if we lose.
It's definately a must for those of us unable to get to a shop to sit down and play with people.
I could see doing it. It seems like a way to cheat a lot since there is too much to keep track of...but you cannot see your opponent's board. Seems better to play with people you know to reduce cheating. Or to have both players use a webcam.
Have you looked into using something like apprentice or MWS? Those at least have a GUI so you can see what is going on each side of the board. They are also free, unlike MTGO.

"In another life, in another dream,
By a different name,
Gave it all away for a memory and a quiet lie.
But I felt the face of a cold tonight,
Still don't know the score,
But I know the pain of leaving everything very far behind.
And if I could cry,
And if I could live,
What truth I did then take me there,
Heaven Goodbye."

I play with LackeyCCG (free and supports multiplayer) and use Skype to voice chat because it's much faster and easier than typing everything out.
Thanks Zaph and High~Light Studios for the awesome sig pic!
