I haven't played mtg since Mercadian Masques, and I was never a serious player.
I've played MTGO on the side a bit, but I want to start playing real mtg again, do more than just casual play.
How do I get back in? I've been thinking of getting a Zendikar intro pack - but should I just get a box of boosters instead? or just build a deck from scratch buying individual cards?
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.

For monetary efficiency, you should consider just buying singles, but a booster box of Zendikar has held one of the best return values on boosters in a long time. Nonetheless, if you're focusing on Standard and want to get in, you probably are much better off buying the requisite cards you need, and maybe a playset of commons and uncommons from the newest set/sets.

That makes sense I guess. It's not too expensive, some preliminary research is showing me that a 4x playset of each u/c from each set is about $30-$40.. it could add up though...
Let's say, if I had to choose 2-3 of the standard-legal sets to get a 4x playset of all c/u, which should I get? I'm thinking the newest ones seems like the most obvious answer, so M2010 and Zendikar? What would give me the best variation and avoid too many reprints or similar cards? or which of those sets tend to have the 'better' uncommons and commons (maybe taking into consideration that I mainly prefer mono-black decks)?

I like the intro packs. Some online stores/eBay will have sets of 5 intro packs for a bit less than buying them individually at retail. And remember, the intro packs come with a booster pack, too. For a casual/budget player (like me) I think buying a set of each intro pack is a good way to have fun with a new expansion.
Magic 2010 was 50% reprints, 50% "new cards." The quotes are for the fact that a good deal of the new cards were functional reprints; nonetheless, M10 has a bunch of good cards, for a core set.
Zendikar is an interesting set, and buying a playset of C/U will give you a decent feel for the set, as well as some useful cards (key uncommons for Vampires, some Boros Bushwhacker aggro dudes, etc.)
I have every single Theme Deck from Masques through Shards of Alara all still in tact and in great shape. I bought them because I thought that they were usually good casual introductions to each set and they were fun to play with. Getting 2-3 copies of cards helped with the cohesiveness of the decks and they seemed to be built with playability in mind.
I got the 40 card intro packs in Shards and... well. Never again. Getting a ton of 1-ofs and only 40 cards is stupid. If I want packs I'll buy them individually and the decks are almost unplayable now. And you don't get the box to store them in anymore since the new boxes are just big bulky stupid displays. That may sound like a small detail, but being able to organize and store them was a big part of my willingness to buy every single one.
Galspanic, I said that I last played during Masques, but I did in fact buy an 7th Ed. precon deck, Decay, pretty bad, way too many 1-of's Before that I had a 3rd Ed. starter deck and a Masques one that came with Tidal Kraken I believe (I'm not entirely sure of this though as I can't find a premade deck with one in it...)
I'm for sure getting M10 and ZEN sets then, if I were to choose another one, which one would you guys recommend?

longer answer: the older theme decks were better, because they were at least somewhat playable, heck some of them were even quite good. And they were 60 cards, whereas these new ones are not even legal to sit down and start playing with in even casual FNM. And I remember as a newbie doing the whole "try and cram stuff from packs into a theme deck" bit. It doesn't work too well unless you buy say, a box. So those 2 intro pack boosters are kind of worthless. A fatpack is a better buy imo, even after having most of the desirable stuff taken out of it, at least you're getting the lovely full art land and 8 boosters and a spindown. (but not the book and the other box, oh my )
I really like the intro decks. If you can get them cheap ($10 or less) then they're not a bad return on value, especially if you can pick up the one that holds a valuable rare (White in 2010, Black in Zendikar, it seems).
I've played a couple intro/casual play with them at PAX and a Zendikar pre-release, and it's a nice low-key way to get some cards and to meet players.
I looked through the M10 list of commons and uncommons, and I couldn't see 99% of the cards even being used in semi-competitive play.. so many vanilla crits that cost too much or spells that have better and cheaper alternatives. Zen on the other hand has some really amazing and unique commons and uncommons in every color.
I think core sets have always been like that, I remember the booster packs for non-core expansions would always say 'Expert' on them, so I assume core sets have cards that are meant to slow the pace of the game down a little and keep spells straightforward and simple for novice players..
Anyway, maybe I'll go ZEN + either Conflux or Shards of Alara (or maybe all three). I could also go Alara Reborn as I wouldn't mind making multicolored decks.

"In another life, in another dream,
By a different name,
Gave it all away for a memory and a quiet lie.
But I felt the face of a cold tonight,
Still don't know the score,
But I know the pain of leaving everything very far behind.
And if I could cry,
And if I could live,
What truth I did then take me there,
Heaven Goodbye."
