My friend and I just got back from an FNM at our local shop in Burnsville, Minnesota, and it's the night before the Saturday 5k event and Sunday PTQ. A guy was looking through my trade book while I played a round so we could trade in between, and when I had finished he had run off with it. From what he told others in idle conversation while he was there, he's from out of town, from Chicago, but plays in Wisconsin. He doesn't want to play the 5k or ptq because his ranking is above 2000, so he doesn't want to take the risk of losing rank since he gets auto in for having a ranking above 2050 (though his isn't there yet). He's fat, ugly, wears a hat in an attempt to conceal that, and probably most key in finding him is the fact that he won two 5Ks. That's gotta narrow it down. I'm searching right now myself, but would really appreciate some help. Sorry for posting this here, but because I doubt he's in town for long I needed the forum with most views. I'll remove it soon, but really need help cause it's a $600 book and I'd have to quit the game if I don't get it back. I also doubt he'd risk coming back to the event location tomorrow or Sunday.

If the guy played at your store, your TO could maybe find the DCI number, that would really narrow it down.
Yeah, the guy didn't play..otherwise I would've. I found Eddie Anderson, Noah W. Swartz, Jimmy R. McCarthy, Samuel H. Black, Mike D. Youngberg, Rashad S. Miller, and Bob Havolic as the only people in either region that can possibly fit the ranking. I'm just having trouble finding which one won two 5ks.
he stole your stuff. do you really think he was telling the truth about anything? he was lying to impress people because he is fat and ugly. he has probably never even played in a 5k, or his version of "winning" was stealing the most stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised. But the ranking is the only reson he'd be in town but not play either big event this weekend, and he had extensive knowledge of the format (I was told by guys I play tested with who had every single tier 1 deck right there, so I trust their word on someone's knowledge of the format).

Or he wanted to steal someone's cards, and knew that he couldn't if he wanted to play in a tournament, because he'd be recognized.
I honestly hate to say it, because I know firsthand how much it sucks to lose a collection to theft, but you're not likely to get it back... the best thing you can do is compile a list of any oddities that might have been in your binder - rare/ marked/ damaged/ signed cards, etc., send the list to as many places as possible that this guy might be, and hope that he was dumb enough to leave the cards in the binder in the same order, or that he played them all in one deck or something; we had a theft problem a couple years ago at my local shop, so one of my friends clipped a corner off of his set of Wrath of Gods and showed them to the head judge and said "I'm not doing this to cheat, I'm doing this to avoid getting my stuff stolen; if you see anyone else with these, they were stolen from me." Sure enough, within the month my friend's binder was missing, and a week later one of the local players showed up with a deck containing a set of clipped-corner Wraths. Thief caught.
I wish you the best of luck in getting your collection back
That really sucks man - I play occasionally at the den and misty mountain from time to time - if you give us some details on what to look out for, I'm sure people would be willing to keep an eye out.
That being said - if this guy has any savvy at all, he's probably already dealt the cards.
The guy wasn't a pro - that was a story to make you feel comfortable with him looking at your cards while playing your round. A pro isn't going to waste time stealing cards.

I know Jimmy McCarthy, and he wouldn't do that. He also doesn't fit the description at ALL. Rashad is a judge, and he's black, so I'm pretty sure that's not him. Sam Black is here: http://www.wizards.com/mtg/images/daily/twtw/twtw31_samBlack.jpg
so I'm pretty sure that's not him. Use google image search and see if you can match someone.

Seconded. A real pro of that "alleged" caliber wouldn't risk his rep over $600 worth of cards he probably owns or can get easily.
