There certainly are competitive players that aren't elitists.
Hahahahahahhahah, I have a guy at my card shop that is the absolute perfect incarnation of this fact. He always runs an original deck and scoops to anyone running anything from the netsdecks (cryptic, wall of reverence, INVEST, etc) and goes on and on about some bs on how he's better because he's original. I'm plenty original but the fact is that if I'm to beat my friends also playing at the tournament I have to incorporate the deck I'm best with; 5-color. The version I run uses a ton of randomn junk like Nicol bolas and Wild Richochet just because I like it so its not exactly a net-deck. Besides being creative in standard is soo much more boring once you have the card pool to be creative in extended and legacy. I really don't like those types of elitists as they don't even have a source for their arrogance so it just sorta fuels itself.
Course on the flip side I have to try very hard to not be elitist because a) a large group of players respect me in several local card shops. and b) for my age group of college student I'm a very good player for the area who can play evenly with anyone in the city. I'm not really arrogant by nature but I do find it a problem because fact is for the area I am according to the DCI one of the best ranking top 10 for the city and second for standard in the city. However, I'm always more than happy to try my best to help casual FNM goers with their decks in a manner that preserves indivisuality. (Probaly why I'm relitively popular, I don't just say add cryptic and leave it at that.)
What sucks is after a while if you care enough about your dci score you need the $300 decks and you tend to ignore that starter deck player concetrating on the one or two top players. Otherwise your score goes down, a good player in my area (Score is 1800+) can go 3-1 and still lose like four points in FNM.
I have also come to hate these morons, one of whom actually put me off of tourney play at Coldsnap a couple of years ago.
I got a totally horrible Sealed draft and went down 2-0, 2-0 in my first two games. He also had gone 2-0, 2-0 down. Despite this he was still being cocky and playing far too quickly. I caught him cheating on mana at least twice. What's more, he reduced his life total by too few points after my attacks on two occasions and claimed that it was 'my job to keep track of his life total'.
When I swung with my Kjeldoran Outrider he blocked on his Frost Raptor, and then declared that he would 'unblock' with it once I paid W to beef it to 2/3. I gave him a last warning that I would call the judge. Even after he carried on dicking about, he still only got a verbal warning. I still managed to win 2-0 and he threw a temper tantrum, refusing to shake hands and storming off. For a pre-release, seems a little serious.
Goes to show that most of these elitists can't take being beaten.
For me, humility when winning and graciousness when losing is very important. I have been playing the game for longer than most and still make bum errors, like everyone, but there is little room in any game or sport for belitting others less skilled or fortunate.
Any good player who is good enough to recognize that there are no "good" or "bad" plays there are only right and wrong plays. Any one who realizes this will most likely tell people when they are making the wrong play. When you correct some one who isn't even playing the right cards in their deck its going to come across as elitist but when you are absolutely right, your right. If the person is so close minded to not listen to the clearly more experienced and better player that is no one elses fault but their own. It doesn't matter who sounds like what or how things come across because in the end all that matters is the "elitist" is right. And on the competitive scene the person who is right is going to win a majority of the time.

I will play what wins, not what is convenient. Personal preference is nothing, The win is all that matters. I will netdeck at every opportunity, but I will not let that stifle my creativity. Style points do not appear on tournament reports. A good deck with an incompetent pilot is nothing more than a dressed up match win. I will crush my opponent mercilessly, and expect no less from him. Victory is its own reward, The prize is just a bonus.

I'd really like to think you're not so short sighted as to think that a) it doesn't matter how you say things to people and b) the majority of magic players hang their self worth on how often they win. Most the players around here aren't great. They do try to learn, and most of them will take advice if they it comes from someone they respect. But they still lose frequently. And they're ok with it. Because they still have fun playing with their cards. And I'm glad they do because it means I get to keep playing, usually for free.

A) It usually don't its all about how people view you, if some one thinks your full of snide remarks every you say to that person is going to come across as snide no matter how you say it...
B) I hate when people say they play for fun while they go to PTQs and then complain about elitists when they get out played by a completely better player. Your at a PTQ the end goal of every one who entered is to qualify for the Pro tour. All that matters at a ptq or any tourney is winning. Because if you wern't there to win you wouldn't be there in the first place, you would be at your buddies house on the kitchen table.
If people wern't so close minded about "elitists" they would learn some thing from the better player. Like the rules/interactions/cards they are using to beat you. That is how you become a better player. Take a noob playing against you playing TSP/Lor legal Lark combo deck, you go combo on them and they get upset because you just beat them and they don't know how. This is why the newbier players never play combo, because they don't understand it. The best thing you could ever do as a player is to learn from every loss why it happened and what you could have done differently to possibly make the game go in your favor.
Im sorry that top tier decks cost 300+ but they do and for a reason.

I have to say that I don't fully agree with this. When I go to a tournament I definitely would like to win-heck store credit/cards/big money is pretty sweet. That being said, I enjoy tournaments because of the high level of intensity that is involved. Casual is great, but often times it can get a little overly relaxed. While I could say something to my friends, I have a feeling that it would not go over too well, as they enjoy the game for different reasons than myself. This is why I look forward to tournaments: I can now say that no, you can't take that play back/tap that differently/draw 7 instead of 6. Additionally, it allows me to face completely new people with new decks and skill levels. I will admit however, that everyone is definitely different in this regard.

A) In my experience people don't assume you are snide for no reason. Perhaps one or two. After that, you're probably contributing somehow.
B) I have no issue with good players. I help them test sometimes. More frequently I draft against them and I do just fine. Some of them are nice, others not so much. Look, you are obviously very competitive and that's fine. Some people aren't. I've dropped from a PTQ at 4-0. I have no interest in more than about 5 hours of magic at once. Heck, not sure what I'd do if I won a PTQ. Probably take the ticket and go vacationing instead of playing. You might not understand that but I don't understand your motivations either.
C) I agree magic decks are not that expensive. I certainly get my sets through drafting and trading alone.
Whatever. People play for different reasons. Just hope you play against someone me when Top 8 is on the line. If you don't act like a jerk i'll probably condeed you in.

C) I actually said top tier magic is expensive to keep up with. Either be willing/able to pay to play or your not playing top tier. And trying to draft a playset of a top tier deck is insane. Its much cheaper to just buy the whole deck. Sure there are cheap decks around but they arn't top tier or their cards would be expensive.

You know, the guys who won't even talk to you unless you've entered a couple of PTQ's and looks down on anyone who doesn't have a $300 deck. The guys who only speak in Magic lingo and expects you to know exactly what they are talking about when they throw around terms like "MOTO" and "LSV" (yeah I know what they mean). These guys make their plays lightening fast without saying anything, then expect you to follow everything they just did.
anyone else encounter these guys?
just don't pay these guys any attention, seriously.

I think some people are confusing being a good competitive player with being an elitist. You're only an elitist if you're a jerk to other players who aren't as competitive or don't have the cards that you do.
They always look down on people and laugh at them when they do certain things, and they're so pathetic themselves that it makes it even more unbearable.
The worst is when they look like such a dork and have a goofy voice.
Ugh. I hate when you try and even trade with them.
I like trading with my one guy because if there's a dumb foil he wants he'll trade like tons and tons of crap rares for it, and I love crap rares! (I don't believe there's such thing as a crap rare..)
I asked one of these jerks the other day if they had some card I needed, some rare or something, I don't remember, and they were like "Yeah I have 50 of those at my house" and they're serious.

How is this relevant? There are jerks- people that are actually going to make playing a game an unpleasant experience- and then there are people you just may not like. (for whatever reason) But when you start hating people for owning card X, or playing deck Y, or having voice Z, it's a little silly.
This thread doesn't make any sense to me. It's a competitive game MOST of the time. If you don't like the competitive nature of some people, don't play competitive. There's entire formats dedicated to casual play. If there's a jerk/snob in your casual playgroup, then don't play with them.
why is it acceptable to start a thread to bash eletist ( IE comptitive) players but if I started a thread about how I hate bad players, newbs, players that just play to lose ect. Id be hated out of the mtgs community in a second. This seems like a huge double standerd to me, and it makes me pretty sick that a thread like this can stay open.
I know this website mostly caters to rumors, trades, and low level stratagy discussion, but that doesnt mean there should be room for threads like this. I mean if you go to any serious stratagy mtg message board you never see threads like this and if you do they are locked within a day or two, because its just a pointless discusion that usually leads to flamming, spamming, ect.
Maybe it's because of my stature or "presence" at the table but I've only met one person what acted like he was holier than thou and when I beat him he insulted me and told be "I can't believe I lost to a noob and your crappy deck" which I then informed him that if he continued to insult me and my hard earned MTG cards again that we would then have to take the conversation outside where I would show him the meaning of being "noob" (never overestimate others Bareknuckles)

Get together a bunch of jank cards which you know 100% you will never, ever use and bring them with you into the shop (put them in every and all pockets).
Then play a few matches with some friends as you would normally, and then play a game with whoever the biggest snob is. Then as soon as any of these snobs or "elitists" as you call them act like morons, just take out a handful of your jank cards and start throwing them at him/her.
Then just keep doing it until someone stops you and then sit back down again and say "My turn?"
how does that achieve any thing other than make you look like a complete weirdo?

At least in my case, I had hoped to be clear that competitive != elitist. Most competitive players a very nice. And really, as you say, this isn't a strategy board. Shrug, different crowds.

bbbbbut you mean it's not ok to ***** cry and moan like a little girl every time something upsets me? nevermind that in real life you'll occasionally meet folks that you don't like and don't like you?
i mean OP was crying because folks had the audacity to use magic specific acronyms in conversation.
Huck101: good work man. i generally just call people out on their attitudes. and that will shut them up, alot of these people/kids just have like ignorant-level social skills. most magic players aren't exactly alpha males so it's pretty easy for even a little guy like me to put them in their place. (little older stoner who helps the kids @ the store)
These types of threads ALWAYS degenerate to this point and I've probably already let this one go on longer than I should. Any time you have a thread complaining about a specific subset of the Magic community, it will inevitably lead to name-calling and petty jabs at one another. Thread closed.

Rargh
So wait you hate some people for having cards you need?
Personal preference is nothing, The win is all that matters.
I will netdeck at every opportunity, but I will not let that stifle my creativity.
Style points do not appear on tournament reports.
A good deck with an incompetent pilot is nothing more than a dressed up match win.
I will crush my opponent mercilessly, and expect no less from him.
Victory is its own reward, The prize is just a bonus.

Simple. Complaining about it does nothing.
