You will always hear from doomsayers that Magic is not doing well (exception was probably during Ravnica block). I would think that the player base is still as large as ever. It's even possible that it's higher than it's ever been, if you can judge by Grand Prix attendancy. I don't know anything about the sales, but I know that Wizards of the Coast has been forced to cut certain expenses (like the fourth Pro Tour, the Magic Invitationals). But I am pretty sure this isn't (largely) due to low sales, but it's because of the financial crisis.
By the way, I don't really know anything. These are just my guesses.
I think Shrubby just ended the thread. He's got a good point. The game is doing fine.
Hell, think of it this way.
Wizards of the Coast CANCELED States. Then what happened? The players made it happen again. That's right, the players, the masses, forced it to happen.
My shops owner was just saying the same thing due to lackluster attendance at FNM. Then on Friday twice the amount of normal people showed up. Magic just slows down over the holidays and then picks back up.
Oh yeah, I forgot the one and only measure of the game's health was pro statistics.
Well, that would be a smart comment, if it weren't completely flawed. A Grand Prix is not a Pro invitation event, it's open to the public, and therefore is a good measurement of how the game is doing, because it asses the amount of open public who are wanting to attend MTG major events.
As for the question, did we really need this? Another person asking if the game is going down in flames? MTG is fine, and will survive the current economy. Until the packs are $10/per & you're searching a box for a Super Mega Ultimate Rare Foil, you wonn't have to worry about MTG surviving, and maybe not even then, lol.
