I come to you with a wacky idea that I have found very, very interesting. It should come as no surprise to anyone when I say that I simply love the demigod cycle in SHM-EVE. Not because everyone knows me and my tastes, but because they really are awesome in all aspects. My intent here is to break each and every one of them. For that, I'm gonna need your help.
I recently qualified for Nationals and the upcoming Standard format is, of course, unexplored as it is, so I need some fresh ideas to try and find something different to play in September. If everything fails I'll simply go back to my beloved and fierce BG Elves deck, but I'd rather play something completely different - but viable - for a change. Eventide, with the enemy hybrids and enemy cairns, should make at least four other color combinations viable (UG, BW, RW and UR, since BG is already up and kicking), and I want to find out what would be the best color pair to use as a starting point. 10 demigods, 10 color pairs, it all adds up rather nice, really
Until Sunday 12:00 AM my time (GMT -3 iirc) I'll be accepting deck submissions from any registered member in MTGSalvation with at least 20 posts (this is to incentive somewhat new members to keep posting, not to drive away newbies). Submissions must be legal under the following rules:
1. You will pick one, and only one, among the ten HHHHH creatures in the Shadowmoor block and build your deck around them. 2. Your decklist must be Standard-legal. This means you can use cards from Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight, Coldsnap, Xth Edition, Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor and Eventide. 3. Only one submission per member. You may edit your submission in some cases (read below) but you can't submit a different deck if you have already submitted one. Think twice before hitting that ''submit'' button! 4. I will pick one deck of each color pair (so ten decks total, each one based around one of the demigods) and clash those decks against each other. Each deck will play each of the other nine decks once, in best 2/3 matches. Once the dust settles, the four decks with the best results will make two Semifinals, and the top 2 decks will advance to a final match between them. The winning deck's creator will win a special signature banner as a trophy for winning this demigod challenge. I will post more details about the prize as I start and finish agreements with one of the 'shoppers. 5. After the finals, I will take the winning deck to a Magic-League trial (as soon as that's possible), with some minor modifications by myself if I choose to do so. If I manage to Top 3/Top 4 (it varies there, dunno why) in the trial, the winner of the contest will win, on top of the winner's banner, a $20 gift certificate from Rancored_Elf's website, given by me.
Decklist Rules
1. Your decklist must have a full playset of the chosen demigod. No more, no less. This means you do have (almost) total freedom to pick 56 other cards and a 15-card Sideboard, but the playset of the chosen demigod is untouchable and should be located in the maindeck. 2. Your decklist must have only cards that are within the chosen demigod's colors. No bleeds are allowed, of any kind (for example, no Firespout in your GW Oversoul deck). Not even if you intend to use only the Green half of Firespout in your GW deck. 3. Turn to Mist is not a White card, and it's not a Blue card. It's a White/Blue card. It's allowed only in a UW Godhead deck. I realize this limits choices somewhat, but this is a 2000+ cards Standard format, for crying out loud. I want you to be creative and go lurk for that hidden gem in one of the many Standard-legal sets. 4. To sum up 4 and 5, basically your GW deck can use any of the following cards:
The same for UR, UW, etc. 5. ''Lands'' is somewhat ambiguous, so I'll clarify. Reflecting Pool and Vivid Lands as means of getting extra Duals for your color pair is ok (dunno why would someone have to resort to that with 10 cairns plus 10 painlands plus the other duals scattered around the sets, but whatever), but you have to treat those lands like lands that produce only the colors of your demigod. No off-color activations in cards are allowed (for example, your BR Demigod deck can use Shadow Guildmage but only for the R ability, even if you run some Vivids which would grant access to U. The other ability won't be considered). Colorless lands of ANY kind are OK (Vesuva, Urza's Factory, Mutavault, etc). Good luck on getting your deck to succesfully cast the demigod on the 5th turn, though. 6. Please try to make your deck as competitive as possible. Yes there's a decent ammount of flavor in this contest but my goal really is to get some ideas for Nationals, which is of course going to be a competitive field. 7. The Eventide spoiler is completed but of course there may be some corrections to be made when Wizards releases the spoiler in Gatherer. That will be up by Sunday, though, so there is time for any member to edit his/her submission in case a spoiled card turns out to be much better - or much worse - than it looks. 8. Please don't abuse of Rule 7. You can edit your submission but only due to spoiler corrections and such. Editing your submission to completely (or even partially) change your decklist will be frowned upon and as a result I will simply skip your post and pick someone else's deck. Don't lose the chance of earning $20 in prizes due to ''last-minute gut feelings'' or something. Those pretty much never work. 9. I realize that Oversoul of Dusk will be a pain for at least three of the other 9 decks (UR, UB and BR), but try not to add 4 Trip Noose to your deck just because you are afraid of the Oversoul. By all means have some way to deal with it (and there are plenty, trust me), but, again, try to make your deck as competitive as possible. 10. Don't forget your sideboard. This is very important, and decks without a sideboard won't be considered when the time comes for me to choose the ten decks. If you forgot to add a sideboard to your submission, you can - and should - use the edit button to add one. Just make sure you do so before the deadline (Sunday 12:00 AM GMT -3).
More importantly, have fun and give me some cool ideas
If you have any questions, ***PM me***. I'd like to keep this thread for submissions only, to keep things clean. By all means post a lot of content alongside your submission, but keep the spam to a minimum if you can ;). If a member messages me with a very relevant question/suggestion I will add it to the thread myself, don't worry.
Oh before I go, I apologize in advance for any spelling/grammar mistakes and for anything that I might have forgotten to add to the rules. I had to make this thread quickly because I have an exam tomorrow, which means I have a lot to study this afternoon and I wanted to have this going asap so that people could start building the decks and asking questions/posting submissions. I'll do my best to keep this thread up to date and make any corrections that deem necessary. Thanks
Sounds like a fun contest, so I'll give it a shot.
Because you want something new, I won't give you a new Rock variant. I would have given you BG Rock Control with Deity, but that's too clichéd. So, here's an update of an old favorite, UG Critical Mass from Kami-Rav Standard.
Decklist first, then I'll give you why each slot is like that.
So, that's it. SB is subject to change, I just realized it might be nice to have.
You have a good tempo suite with a massive 16 counterspells with bonuses. Dream Fracture may seem odd, but it's great for tempo and occupies a good spot on the curve, with it being your only 3-mana counterspell. It's better than Cancel because even though they draw a card, so do you. It's a good chance that whatever you drew into can deal with what they have next turn.
Birds of Paradise and Wall of Roots come down when you aren't doing much else, on turns 1 and 2. They also accell you into your finisher, Overbeing of Myth, and your great tempo swings like Mystic Snake and Cryptic Command.
Of course, you need to be able to draw cards to gain a large advantage over their tempo. Here, Ancestral Visions comes in. If you don't have a Turn 1 Birds, you can suspend that knowing that you won';t run out of gas. Mulldrifter helps out too, being either a Counsel of Soratami or a 2/2 Flying creature that has given you a bit of steam. Obviously Overbeing loves the extra card draw, so she can swing in for the win. She herself also draws you an extra card, so you're covered in the card advantage department.
Vendilion Clique is an odd choice, but he disrupts the opponent and occupies a spot on the curve I wanted to flesh out a bit. He also is in there as a critical early beater. Vendilion Clique usually comes in at the end of their draw step, so you can control what they do that turn for the most part.
Treetop Village is just good, and it can always swing in for an extra 3 points, or block some random creature.
Mutavault is in over Faerie Conclave because it doesn't come into play tapped. It's colourless shouldn't be too bad, because the accelleration all give you either G or U.
Edit 1 - Sideboard explanations:
Snakeform is in there against Rock, Elves, and Lark decks. Snakeform causes the creature to lose all abilities, even their Leaves-Play ones, so it beats Lark. It also cycles itself. Against Rock and Elves, it turns one of their good creatures, like Chameleon Colossus, into a small 1/1 creature that something like your Mystic Snake can take down.
Remove Soul is there for now, there might be something better. It can also come in against Elves and Rock to take care of an early creature by means of Birds of Paradise/Llanowar Elves. It's also decent at stopping fatties like Oona or another Demigod...
Cloudthresher is there against Faeries and Quick N' Toast. One thing I found while playing QnT is that Cloudthresher is actually very good in the mirror. It's just too big to handle most of the time when it resolves.
Primal Command is so versatile, it can come in against RDW, Lark, Rock, Storm Combo Decks, etc. It's very good, but being Qed for Nationals I'm sure I don't need to explain it.
Loxodon Warhammer is a weird choice, but it's amazing against RDW and Elves. Really, try it out. It's the backbreaker in the Elves mirrormatch, and is so good against Elves in general.
That's my entry for now, is that how it's supposed to be?
@Nick_ : That's exactly what I want, thanks for putting up such a great example! Now anyone can follow your pattern and help make this the success I think it will be
@Big Taste: Unfortunately, you don't have 20 posts (there's a note about that in the intro, just above the rules), so I can't accept your submission. I'm sorry, but by all means keep posting here and establish yourself as a member, and then feel free to join any one of my future contests
Basically it's the established G/W aggro deck that's already competitive. No reason to change a good thing, and Eventide doesn't add anything special. Talara's Batallion has no place, neither does Goyf in my opinion.
It's pretty straightforward to play, has enough basics to not be too affected by Magus of the Moon, and a variable SB. Lark is the hardest matchup.
@players who forgot to/didn't post a sideboard: This contest does not work on a first come, first serve basis, so there's absolutely no point in sumitting a decklist without a SB considering you still have more than three full days to choose your 75 cards. I won't make a sideboard for your deck if I like it, I will simply pick a different deck. Please keep this in mind. Feel free to edit your submissions once you've figured out a SB.
Basically, this is a control deck, as should be pretty obvious. I tried to make it close to mono black, to maximize consume spirit but with enough white to handle pro-black things like Overbeing of Myth and Chameleon Colossus. Also, much of the targeted removal focuses on removing permanents from the game in order to avoid nasty things like persist.
A special note about the sideboard: Spirit link: I chose this card for the sideboard because of the ability to act as a pseudo pacifism, as well as enchanting your creatures (basically the divinity) to get the bonus even faster.
Roiling Horror: Theoretically, these should be consume spirits 5 and 6. I'm not sure how they will turn out though.
Also, I did not take profane command for this deck because of the lack of life gain on it. I was trying to keep it so that the divinity of pride would be 8/8 more often. Profane command may end up being better in the long run though, because it is both a kill spell and damage for to the opponent.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
here's my entry, a UR dominus control deck i've been fooling around with. It heavily involves dominus' effect of stealing a permanent and using it to your advantage, such as sacraficing it to Greater Gargadon .
The point of the deck is to control them and abuse the ability of Dominus of Fealty and sacrifice the permanent to Greater Gargadon (note it doesn't say creature!) I have found it to work great so far, and i hope you like it!
This deck is primarily a deck that has fun with -1/-1 counters. The overall goal is to combine crumbling ashes and necroskitter to take all of your opponent's creaures, then beat your opponent down with them (eat your heart out dominus of fealty). Quillspike can protect your own creatures, as well as provide an instant kill with devoted druid. Tower above can help with blockers and/or oversoul of dusk.
Now, when your opponent's deck requires a faster answer, or is almost creatureless, the sideboard allows you to turn this deck into pure aggro. In this deck, the mimic is the best two drop you could ask for, even better than the battalion. Stalker hag is unblockable against just about everything, and in general your sideboard is packed with fast creatures that will let you put the beatdown on your opponent very, very quickly.

As much as I'm against the OTT view that this card is going to solo tournaments, cure cancer and make Susan Boyle attractive I'm not really a fan of the opposing camp who think it slaughters puppies and sired Justin Bieber.
Just something I cobbled up together....but maybe it's gonna be worth a shot, and maybe it can be a base for future improvements.
When going through this thread before posting, I realized that my idea was VERY similar to BigTaste's - using Oversoul, Heartmender, and the persist critters. I did make this deck independently, based on somewhat successful draft decks. I hope that BigTaste would understand that I did not simply copied his idea.
Sideboard is very...rusty...
I take no credit for the tech involved in this deck, but I certainly think the deck looks fun and is powerful enough to get the job done.

By all means, yes. Sorry for the late reply, I was busy with some rl stuff.
And I know this was supposed to be done by Sunday but there's still a few demigods missing. Come on folks, someone build at least one deck around the missing ones so that I can start playing
I know I have less then 20 post but here is what I came up with. Basically its using token storm and the lieges ability to cause a massive burn to the face of your opponent. With the creatures providing the other win condition by getting pumped from the enchantments and effects.
You have some decent heal ability thanks to the life links and Leige again.
Also normal removal that red enjoys, plus the O-ring it does not.
The figure of destiny is a one drop that you can use as a mana sink and a target for enchanting. Plus it be funny to see a flying 12/10 first strike that inflates and has life link. Chances are it wouldn't happen but one can dream.
The win condition would take a while to set up but red can usually burn some mobs for a couple of turns and drop some cheapies itself.
I was going to use grapeshots or maybe add them in but I think the tokens would find more use with all the pluses flying around.
Really I don't see this deck needing the avatar at all to be honest, but the rw one is kind of subpar. Probably to make up for the liege.
This deck started off with a faerie base which combos with the ghastlord to lockdown your opponent without cards in their hand and on the field. Two drops allow for speedy take down of your opponent and cards like the liege and the clique allow for late game beaters. Finally, my sideboard consists of cards that may be helpful against this decks biggest weakness- other black decks by using cards such as damnation and thoughtseize. Oona is also great in case of a match against faeries which could prove troublesome in your tournament.
It's a lifegain deck, based on Martyr and Grim Harvest. The other creatures are also pretty good for recurring. The sideboard transforms it into Rebels against control, because I couldn't resist.
Guys in order to allow more people to participate I'm going to extend the time limit for submissions to this next Sunday, the 20th. One of the reasons is that I'm going on a road trip with my family and we won't be back till Monday. I'll begin playing with the chosen decks next week, so have fun coming up with wacky - but good - decklists for me to choose from. Talk to you all later!

I realize this limits choices somewhat, but this is a 2000+ cards Standard format, for crying out loud. I want you to be creative and go lurk for that hidden gem in one of the many Standard-legal sets.
4. To sum up 4 and 5, basically your GW deck can use any of the following cards:
Lands
Artifacts
Mono-Green cards
Mono-White cards
Green/White hybrids
The same for UR, UW, etc.
5. ''Lands'' is somewhat ambiguous, so I'll clarify. Reflecting Pool and Vivid Lands as means of getting extra Duals for your color pair is ok (dunno why would someone have to resort to that with 10 cairns plus 10 painlands plus the other duals scattered around the sets, but whatever), but you have to treat those lands like lands that produce only the colors of your demigod.

4 Consume Spirit
2 Wrath Of God
3 Crib Swap
3 Oblivion Ring
3 Unmake
2 Faerie Macabre
3 Spirit Link
2 Extirpate
3 Sudden death
2 Roiling Horror
Basically, this is a control deck, as should be pretty obvious. I tried to make it close to mono black, to maximize consume spirit but with enough white to handle pro-black things like Overbeing of Myth and Chameleon Colossus. Also, much of the targeted removal focuses on removing permanents from the game in order to avoid nasty things like persist.
A special note about the sideboard:
Spirit link: I chose this card for the sideboard because of the ability to act as a pseudo pacifism, as well as enchanting your creatures (basically the divinity) to get the bonus even faster.

HOW TO CONSTRUCT MANA BASE (not mine)
T2 -
WW Kithkin
RGW Zoo
4x deity of scars
4x Quillspike
4x necroskitter
4x Rendclaw trow
4x devoted druid
4x juvenile gloomwidow
4x Twinblade slasher
4x Gleeful sabotage
Artifacts/enchantments:
4x crumbling ashes
Lands:
4x Twilight mire
4x Llanowar wastes
6x swamp
10x forest
4x Stalker hag
4x woodlurker mimic
4x nettle sentinel
3x tower above
Many thanks to ChibiSwan of The Ugly Swan for the great banner!

7x Island
6x Swamp
4x Underground River
4x Sunken Ruins
4x Mutavault
4x Ghastlord of Fugue

2x Bitterblossom
4x Cryptic Command
4x Terror
4x Cancel
3x Nameless Inversion
4x Thoughtseize
4x Rune Snag
3x Oona, Queen of the Fae
This deck started off with a faerie base which combos with the ghastlord to lockdown your opponent without cards in their hand and on the field. Two drops allow for speedy take down of your opponent and cards like the liege and the clique allow for late game beaters. Finally, my sideboard consists of cards that may be helpful against this decks biggest weakness- other black decks by using cards such as damnation and thoughtseize. Oona is also great in case of a match against faeries which could prove troublesome in your tournament.
4x Martyr of Sands
1x Necrotic Sliver
3x Ronom Unicorn
4x Aven Riftwatcher
3x Grim Harvest
4x Wrath of God
4x Oblivion Ring

9x Plains
6x Swamp
1x Mistveil Plains
4x Amrou Scout
4x Blightspeaker
2x Mirror Entity
1x Bound in Silence
4x Thoughtseize
It's a lifegain deck, based on Martyr and Grim Harvest. The other creatures are also pretty good for recurring. The sideboard transforms it into Rebels against control, because I couldn't resist.
