I have infact been present for the openning of a pack of Edgar, and if I remember correctly there was no way to tell. The big green E on the packs are simply what TrollandToad does to distinguish the pack. I guess if you are really good at pack searching you can try to see the 1994 in the copyright line at the bottom.
I would assume the ISBN number would be different, but you would need to check somewhere like Magiclibrarities.net to see if anyone knows that.
Have you ever opened a summer magic pack? If not, then what are you even basing your statement on?
No, I've never opened a Summer Magic pack. I'm basing my assumption on the fact that 'Summer Magic' was the first print run of Revised. At the time, it was meant to be mass-produced - so why in the world would it have a big green 'E' on the front? It's simply not believable, that's all.

Spectral bears post explains why they often have Es on the front.
My point was that saying that something is "unbelivable" without citing any other reason just doesn't make sense, especially when 2 earlier posters claim that there are Es and one obviously posts a pic (removed or not). To say that they aren't printed with one is one thing, but to claim that the green Es are total bunk is kind of rediculous, considering that they really exist with a logical explanation. It's a solid bet that most people these days may have only ever seen them with the Es stamped on, or saw them without and assumed that they were not Summer magic.

So TrollandToad can tell the difference (and mark the packs accordingly) but no one else?
I would expect that with a basic pack search you could spot the normal color difference between Edgar & normal-run cards. (Normal-run Revised cards look quite washed out compared to Edgar cards) but this is just me speculating.

No, I disagree. I gave you my reason. At first you were saying that my claim was absurd because I didn't give a reason and now my reason isn't good enough for you? I really don't care.

No, I'm guessing that that shop has images of the boosters with 'E' MSPainted on top of them. Again, Summer Magic is a printing of Revised - I see no logical reason to believe that they're a huge E (it sounds very gaudy, not like something Wizards would do) on the front without having seen one myself.

I started playing during late Fall when Revised was released; I don't recall EVER seeing an "E" on any booster or starter deck I opened.
However, apparently TrollandToad know the difference if they are stamping their packs with an E.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
So TrollandToad can tell the difference (and mark the packs accordingly) but no one else?

From the information that Librarities has, I would have to say that TrollandToad has either searched the packs that they have to tell, or they came from a summer booster box that was being opened. The fact that they were intended to be a continuation of the Revised print run and that they are claimed to have been packaged in "normal Revised booster" says to me that the product code and ISBN will more than likely be the same as any other Revised booster. Thats all just speculation though.

This begs the question, who makes the wrappers for summer magic. If the same company handled the boxes and wrappers that handled the cards, then there are likely some minute differances that TandT are able to spot.
Otherwise, I think you're right, they popped a summer magic pack and stamped the rest of the box it was in. The Es have been on every one I've ever seen. So they have to have SOME kind of system of determination.

Right - they do have a way of determining is a Revised pack is Summer Magic, but they CAN'T do it by just taking a pack from a pile that has normal Revised in it as well. Do you still think its absurd?
I am pretty sure that Summer Magic (Edgar) was printed elsewhere from the normal place that Magic cards are usually printed (Belgium, I believe). Troll and toad knowingly purchased one or more boxes/cases of summer magic and marked them accordingly to not confuse them with Revised packs. I'm sure that there would be a way to tell the difference in Revised and Summer magic packs from the wrapping, but it would be a slight difference such as the UPC or something else (I don't think they actually printed ISBN Numbers on the packs until later).
I highly doubt that there are many, if any, packs of summer magic floating around. There were only two or three cases that leaked out (from what I read somewhere).

I love older cards (Legends, Revised & Before). Can't wait to get more!
Been playing since Sept. '95 (4th Edition; Ice Age Era).
Is it possible to tell a Summer Magic (Edgar) booster pack from a regular revised booster pack prior to opening?
Yes. All you have to do is check the product number on on the box which the boosters are from. I'm not sure if this number is also printed on the individual packs. This number (or at least the last two digits) differ from that of 4th ed. I know I have a source with this info, but I can't find it atm. I read about it just months ago, so I'll find it somewhere.
I'll be back when I find it.
Edit:
Okay, I can't find it. But I'll type down what I remember, and maybe someone in here will remeber with me.
In England, there was a guy (he later became a professional player) that while he waited for a game between friends to finish, started looking a some of the packs that were in the shop where they played. He noticed that the product numbers of two pack (that everyone thought was revised) were different. This, pluss the fact that some cards looked different, made people investigate their opened/unopened revised packs/boxes to find that none had the same product number as the once containing the different looking cards. This happened somewhere in the late 1994 or early 1995.
I'm sorry for the suboptimal story here.. I'm just typing the bits and pieces I can remember. I will find the source of this. I know it is out there somewhere, as I have a very limited imagination and would never be able to make this up
Like others have mentioned above, there is no way to tell unless you actually search the cards.
Which kind of makes it funny since I distinctly remember a vendor selling the summer MTG wrapping for 20+USD.
Essentially you would be paying for a revised booster wrapping with a big E on it.
Necro Warning.
This is not exactly true. I started playing at the end of unlimited when revised was just coming out. The packs that cards came in during the Pre-Fourth edition sets were notoriously easy to see through. It was possible to see through the wrapper and see either the name of the cards in the pack or the copyright info at the bottom. This was easiest with revised and legends packs.
And as for packs still being around. up until sometime early last year there were still several known packs of Summer that were still out on the market although they were stupid expesive. if they're still out there i can't say.
I beleive that Troll and Toad opened a booster first then seeing it was summer, marked the rest with an E to dintinguish them from Revised. Thats according to Mike (Mykeatog). I asked him last year about it after we did a personal trade. He is the General Manager of Troll and Toad. He also said someone bought a pack and opened it in the store, and it was confirmed to be summer. That should settle any doubts.
