Ever heard about RaresDrafting? I joined a Lorwyn draft today, not realizing that when all games were played, all the rares were given to the winner of the draft so he could choose one of them to keep. Then the player that came second got to pick a card, and this continued until all the cards were gone. Each player got to pick 3 rares. From my boosters I pulled a thoughtseize(!!!!), mirror entity and a crap rare, and got to keep none of them... I came 4th. I really wanted both my cool rares, but ended up getting a Wren's Run Packmaster as my "best" rare.. At least I finished my playset of those..
I will NEVER attend one of these drafts again..
Anyways, what do you think of this? Is this a well known draft type?
Side events usually allow you to keep what you draft, because of prize support. However, in cases where there is NO prize support, organizers often will take the pool of rares and distribute them winners first, losers last (pick and choose). It is fair if all you did was pay for three packs.
The lesson you should learn? Keep your binder on you at all times and substitute in Heat Shimmer for the TSeize in this kind of draft. *nod*
But seriously, if you didn't know that some drafts are played for the pool within, don't join up until you get all the details from the TO.
Heh, I've been in that situation once, but then a couple of players, who weren't aware until after the draft, managed to talk the TO out of it as he hadn't informed all the players about it. I guess we're both talking about the unsanctioned Saturday "noob"-draft at Outland, Oslo? Or?
The store I drafted at in Davis did that all the time. So it is no surprise to me.
I think it is good for the unsanctioned tournaments that have no prize support. If everyone was just rare drafting, then there would be fewer players. It is a good way to discourage rare drafting and thus increase attendance.
It is generally a good idea to get an idea of the prize structure of an event BEFORE entering it.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
Also, I feel it is unfair to those who are new to the game. If you are nwe to the game, you'll be left with crap rares, even if you got good cards.
I don't know. I learned how to play Magic in an area where this was always done, and I think that I'm a much better drafter because of it. It teaches you to look beyond flashy cards or a gold symbol, and ultimately creates a healthier draft environment in which each player only tries to build their best deck, in my opinion.
Now, when I play at the nearest store here in Portland, I regularly get a good deal of credit at our drafts, because I have learned the importance of balancing high value cards with what my deck wants or needs. Sure, I'll take a value pick from time to time (Pithing Needle is the only example that I can think of off of the top of my head), but my decks almost always win because I pass up some mid-to-low value rares for a strong deck. And I think that I owe a considerable amount of this skill to the "raredraft" method.

I know, and I understand I can only blame my self. But playing was fun, so it wasn't a total bummer. And 3 boosters for 100 kroner ($18,5) isn't a big loss. Giving away Loosing a Thoughtseize on the other hand...

I totally see your point. I guess I didn't think of it that way. Also, I'm just upset because I didn't know about the rules. I guess I'll have to agree with you
Actually, I play drafts like this with my group, only each player gets to keep one rare from the ones they picked. You only lose out if you are lucky enough to open multiple constructed-worthy rares (as moldgrim did). Everybody in my group likes it and it drives down the cost of a draft (since we use this system instead of cash prizes like stores do).
Same happens frequently around here. It's accepted, because it prevents the screwing up of pods by someone who is willing to mess with signals for his own rares.
I've never had a big problem with this method, though it is nice to be able to fire up MTGO and take rares for more tix than the pack is worth for compensation.
I used to run this type of draft, but that was because the store we played at did not offer any prizes. I agree with pokerbob. If there is actual prize support, I don't see a reason to do it. I don't particularly like getting cards that someone else played a draft with, much less without sleeves.

We have been doing this for years around we call them a auction draft after with the rares. I hate it, because its a big waster of 30 mins. By the time local events are done its already 11 o clock and I want to go home.
And in some places I know the same person wins week in and week out. This acutally makes the players who always finish in the bottom of the bracket not want to play cause they won't get anything.
For me its just a waste of time.

I am the stone that the builder refused I am the visual, the inspiration, that made lady sing the blues I'm the spark that makes your idea bright The same spark that lights the dark so that you can know your left from your right I am the ballot in your box; the bullet in the gun That inner glow that lets you know to call your brother "son" The story that just begun, the promise of what's to come And I'mma remain a soldier til' the war is won
In my area we just have an impartial party write down any cards in a pack (which you opene) that you want and after the draft we redistribute the cards and trade for uncommons etc.
Takes some of the sting out of things when you know you'll at the very least get the cards you opened.
Then again our store is uber casual =\

Ditto. Then again you rarely see any rares worth more than 2 tix get passed. Virtually the only time I rare draft is on my own packs, usually it's just not worth the couple extra tix you'll get for picking up the bulk rares that get passed.

Hey, lolis with katanas are awesome, and I don't care about their home country.
I play at a sanctioned FNM and we keep what we open. Now sometimes you should "raredraft" which where I play means to just take all the rares out of the packs you open. But usually everyone just tries to make a deck that will win.

I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
This is called "back drafting" where I work and it's the only format used for drafting 99.9% of the time. "rare drafting" (ie, keeping what you open) is highly discouraged here and seen as "noob drafting" because it does not make for a good draft if people just grab the most valuable cards. Back drafting encourages you to build the best deck possible and play your best. The top ten drafters in limited rating for my state all play in my store though, so it makes the competition fierce to a point.
When in doubt though, always ask a TO the format before buying in.
We do fun drafts sometimes on Mondays for the unsanctioned league from time to time- things such as Anaconda, and a draft that's called Back Draft where you draft the worst possible cards and give it to someone else to build and play with. Every time you win with the deck you got, you get a point. Every time your deck you drafted and gave to someone else loses, you get a point.
We too call it backdrafting, and at both of my local stores we did it for every single draft, except one store does rare drafts on fridays only (for sanctioned FNM). Apart from that, the best player gets the best rares.

In my area its called drafting for picks. Tournaments are usually keep what you draft and friendly games are almost always for picks. I'm surprised you've never heard of it. Also I refer to raredrafting as only taking rares as your picks, which is a very newbish thing to do
BackDrafting is the best kind of draft IMHO because your only worry is to make a deck that will win regardless of what rares are used, and in the end the best player will get the best cards.
We call it a "rare re-draft" around these parts. It promotes a better environment. I know for a fact that when I saw a foil Flagstones in my TSB pack, I nabbed it- it paid for my draft. I don't care if it didn't help my deck at all- it was just because I essentially got to play for "free". However, now we typically do a rare re-draft, and commons are usually first draft picks, oddly enough. The decks are all very well created, though, and it's a tough environment to play in. However, it is extremely fun.
I draft to win, but even I won't play in a draft where I can't keep the cards (even if I support in in theory, because it's annoying when there are bad players that join just to snap up the money rares good players pass).

Coincidentally, over at StarCity there is an article discussing the same topic along the same lines.
An interesting read no doubt, but I certainly don't agree with a few points made. Definitely something to read over even if you don't play Magic Online.
