Is there a card that is worth less then a dollar you would pay more then 20$ for? (if the market value was 20$)
I don't understand. If the market value is 20$, then it is not worth a dollar, it is worth 20. Do you still view cards as pieces of cardboard? Value is created by demand, if enough people want a specific piece of cardboard, you can't logically claim that it's the same as every other piece of cardboard. Value is determined by the buyer, not the value of the materials, otherwise cars would cost a few thousand dollars.
I think the most expensive card is the 1996 world champion card, since there is only one. Proposal, blue hurricane, either of the birth celebration cards, probably right up there.
As for legal, playable cards, Lotus, although a mint recall will be worth nearly as much.

It’s a hypothetical. What I am saying is, is there a card to you that was deemed worth a dollar (or around) that you would personally pay or think is worth 20 $
If you can word it better then I can so people will understand what im getting at in MTG lingo Ill haply edit my post lol

No, the birth celebration cards go for 200 bucks or so on ebay once in a great while, putting them in the high, but not quite power 9 range. Remember that there were roughly 100 of each.
The only 2 cards that only have one are the dragon encased in plastic in the japanese lobby and the 1996 world champion. Since they've never been on the market, we can only speculate, but in an open auction, I would expect it to blow us away.
There are several copies of proposal floating around. None have ever sold, Likely would end up in the lotus range, though. 1 was stolen IIRC.
Mint recall does not come close to lotus, btw.
In order
Super-rarities (the 1ofs and proposal) unknown but really high
Blue Hurricane 6k
Lotus 1-3k
Recall 3-6c
Time Walk 2-3c
Splendid Genesis and Fraternal Exultation 2-3c
The origional moxen 1-2c
Timetwister 1-2c
Mishra's workshop 1-2c
Library 1-2c
Please note: these are reasonable in person cash purchase prices. You will see them significantly higher occasionally and from stores. Additionally, all of these are slowly inching skyward each year.
There are cards that, if rare, would cost a ton more. Is that what you are asking?
I personally think that Wild Mongrel would command $8-$10 if it were rare. I can't see anyone saying that it was any less valuable in play than a Call of the Herd.

OOOOH
Well in that case, yes. It happens every time a set comes out. I don't think there are any phenomenal lorwyn sleepers, but I think there are a few that are a dollar that should in fact be around 5-8. I wouldn't personally pay what I think they're worth, if they're undervalued, I would happily pay the dollar and wait a while.
edit: remember, the prices are driven by the hype around a card. I think it's safe to say that barring interactions with cards yet to be printed and future bannings, nothing older than kamigawa should be anywhere else but where it is. New sets on the other hand vary wildly before the prices stabilize. Thoughtsieze for instance is amazing and rightfully highly valued, but it's TOO highly valued. 20 bucks is way to high even for that. I think it'll stabilize after a few major events and drop to 12-15, mabye even lower, but I'm being conservative.
A lot of the summer stuff is crazy. Demonic Tutor and the duals in particular are very high up there; I'm hesitant to put a $$$ on them because I haven't seen any for sale in a while.
Also, test foils of some cards are pretty high, specifically Survival of the Fittest and Recurring Nightmare. Over $500 in most, if not all, cases.
its the blue summer magic hurricane which is so rare I heard they go for around $6-7. It was on display in last years singapore GP in a sealed glass case.
also cards like sinkhole, duress and dark rit would be uber expensive had they been rare.
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.
I've seen the basic lands from Summer Magic go for $100. Utterlyretarded. A famous quotation from PT Barnum comes to mind. A Fool...his money...something something...
Uber_Mexico's list above was pretty much on the money though.
@ tripeboi: Honestly if you're looking to Magic as a way to invest for retirement, you've missed the boat I afraid. The days of $20.00 black loti are long gone, and there's not going to be anything like it again. If you buy up old Magic collections at garage sales, estate auctions, etc, you can still get lucky, but it's increasingly rare I think.
It is possible to pick up playsets of valuable (usually just very playable = valuable) card at cheap prices when I spot them, somewhat for investment purposes, but mostly, I just buy them to play with them, and/or they're just staples.
There's a couple of under-the-radar rares in this set that people are overlooking (imho) and they will go waaay up once the format settles down. (Of course, I'm buying those too...now.)
Now that they're doing more intra-block design, you also have to look at cards with an eye for 'what is yet to come'. In other words, there are crappy cards in Future Sight (Timeshifted)/Lorwyn/Morningtide that won't be at all useful until we see what Shadowmoor has to offer.
So does anyone care to explain to me what Fraternal Exultation is and what it does. Or could I get a picture if anyone happens to have one. I saw a splended Genesis on ebay and I read about Proposal but I have been unable to find Fraternal Exultation

And I have the actual scan for Proposal (missing on above page) at home...I'll post it tonight.
Actually, you shouldn't. Most sites have formally agreed not to show it to the public as per Richard Garfield's personal request. At least ask the mods first. If you want to PM with it, I would personally like to see it.
ok maybe someone can explain to me (a noob) why a card for 3 mana thats a 3/4 that does 1 damage to you on your upkeep be worth 13k????
That specific printing is worth 13k. It's not about the creature, it has been printed in cheaper sets before.
Summer magic is a small subset of the set that was printed in the US and badly screwed up. They are extremely rare as most of them were destroyed except a handfull of cases. There are very few of each of the rares in the set.
edit: in magic, goodness of cards and rareness of cards both act together to determine price based on demand. Think about cars, if you got the same car that was in a movie, noone cares. If you get the ACTUAL car that was in the movie, it's worth way more, even though it's the exact same car. It's just supply and demand. A small number of something that there are relatively few of will cost more than it's regular counterpart, even more so if it's a rare version of something that is desirable to begin with.
edit edit: it's also a 3/4 flyer for 3 in blue with a completely insignificant downside, but that only accounts for so much of the price.
edit edit edit: regular revised version of that card is 2-6$

it's worth that much becaus it's soooooo rare. summer magic was only printed by mistake, and few copies were sold. the revised version is not more than $2-3. the arabian nights version is $30-40, also because it's more rare than the revised one.
as for the card, it is one of the best creatures blue can come up with (other than morphling of course). 3 mana, 2 of them colourless, is good. 3/4 is also good, for 3 mana. flying? wow, this IS good. and no more than 1 dmg pr upkeep? man, I'm glad I have 4 of these (all aribian nights, thank you very much).
90% of the players in this forum will tell you this is a very good creature. few will pay 14k for it.. I wouldn't.

But if you were a rich high roller looking for some bling to show off to magic players and eventually sell for 16K, then you might think about it. It's the same concept as foils, only to a far more exaggerated degree.

very true. and someone did buy it. I wonder who...
Jace on the other hand gives you card advantage for no life cost. On the contrary, Jace can actually take some damage for you. I'd think that makes him better than Arena.

Black Lotus

And no, I would never pay significantly above market value for a card.
edit: Mods, I can link to scg since it's on topic, right? If not, then please delete that.

@ Mad Mat: Really? 6K? I've seen some summer magic stuff go pretty high, but that beats it all, must've been pristine mint.

The first foils weren't until Urza's, so there is no foil black lotus.
