1. The guy sounds like a bully. Think that poor kid still plays Magic? Not likely. Way to scare off the future of our game over a few cards.
2. How does one soda ruin a "full playset of foil shock lands and 5 Psy blasts (one foil, one beta)???" Did the kid open the binder up and pour a little bit on every page? Was nobody paying attention? The drink spills, people jump up, grab the binder, and wipe it off. I can see maybe a little soda getting into one or two pages and warping a few of the cards, but how does one spill destroy 45 cards so badly that they can no longer be played? I sense some exaggeration here.
3. The guy sounds like a bully. I know I already said this one, but anyone who literally threatens to kill a frightened child who made an honest mistake deserves to be called out twice. But hey, at least he extorted some cash out of the kid's parents, which surely resulted in him not only being terrified and threatened, but grounded as well. I bet the guy kept the "destroyed" cards too and plays with them to this day.
How does one spilled drink ruin 45 cards protected inside a binder???
Exactly. We were all kids at some time and did some stupid things too. That guy shouldn't have even placed his 'valuable binder' open beside a drink.

Woah. The way I understood it was that the kid was flipping through and spilled soda, but only Slotster really knows. If it meant getting back hundreds of bux, then I think it's worth it to be called a bully by somebody he'll prolly never meet. Ohs Noez, somebody quit because they/their family was held responsible for damages caused. I don't think he was a bully, he responded to the situation the best he could, what would you have done if you had seen your valuable binder get soda on it. It wasn't extorting money from the kids parents, it was recieving payment for damages caused. Why would he lie on this thread about the damage?
Anyway, that kids lucky it wasn't me having foil shocks, foil psy blast and beta blast doused.
We live in a country were ~50% of the populace believe public schooling is a socialist conspiracy and that being called Einstein is an insult. We could try and fix it, but unfortunately the other 50% don't believe in euthanasia.

He could be exaggerating as he did use the context of killing twice. Nonetheless there are other ways of asking for compensation and threats and extortion aren't the way to go. BTW, I doubt the parents paid hundreds. Heck the kid's parents could have paid zero compensation if the entire thing was brought to small claims mediation as it's doubtful slotster would want to admit threats of murder to a justice.
We're getting off topic so to rerail the thread.... the latest incident for me was at a local tournament. My opponent was shuffling my deck, slipped his hands and ended up bending two dual lands in half (sleeved). You should have seen his face. Anyways I said don't worry about it, he's helped me with enough mtg advice in the past. I didn't threaten him or ask for anything. It's only cards!
cards are one thing, cards worth 40usd are quite another.

I think you mean "PoN", but it seems to me that "PwN" is more appropriate
(the 'w' stands for 'win', I think)

I think that WoTC felt that a lot of the players thought Standard was becoming mundane and a joke from all the nuked cards floating around. R&D took a vacation, and MaRo just started reprinting things.
hmmm... worst thing to happen to my magic cards... Me shuffling them *gives his cards tough love*. Around here, unless the cards become EXTREMELY damaged, the value of a card doesn't flucuate enough for it to matter to me (a couple of bucks here and there). I'm not too worried about going out of my way to make sure I don't put a slight bend in my cards. My opponents cards on the other hand......
Some of you may have been in shock since we invaded Canada and Mexico, but fear not, it was for a good cause. Now that we conrol North America, we produce an extra 5 armies a turn.^_^
Put a milkshake in my bag with my new Judgment cards...soaked several decent rares including all my Wakes and Phantom Nishobas with strawberry shake goo. Who puts a shake in a book bag and goes running out the door?
Recently, was sorting cards and found an extra playset of Price of Progress and some black border Kird Apes so I pulled them out of my binder and put them in my pants pocket to take with my trade materials later on that week...You can guess the outcome when I pulled the pants out of the washing machine and discovered the watery cards poking up out of the pocket.
Thankfully, I've missed the major fires, floods, kid damage, bad trades, theft, burglary, and lending disasters others have so painfully described. It's probably not long in coming, though. I think I've managed to tempt the fates in multiple ways, I have over 50,000 cards, in simple cardboard boxes, without water or fire protection, and live in one of the highest property-crime neighborhoods in the southern US. It occasionally occurs to me to unload a lot of them and focus my time and efforts into a hobby that doesn't entail a huge loss of function if I get robbed or have a flood in my basement. But I enjoy Magic, not only for the game play but also for the collectible aspect, and hoard my silly cardboard like gold.
I don't see why you would threaten a kid over material pocessions(sp?), but whatever...
I shuffle my cards a lot. Doing so makes the edges worn out and I've even made about two dollars shuffling peoples cards because "He has that special touch." We don't really have a value on our cards in my play-group...The only one of us who actually plays in tournaments is a guy named Mike, and he just buys boxes. I could care less if it was damaged, my Couterspell signed by Jason Woodburn(close teahcer who taught me the game). Before he moved out of Iowa, we had one last game and I won. So he signed it. Since then it has been through the wash and had chocolate milk on it, it is still priceless to me.
Random info: Jason Woodburn, or Treefire as my friends and I call him, was once 19th in Worlds.
Yeah.. that happened to a freind of mine. I was talking to him as he was getting into his car and he left his backpack ontop of it. I realized it, and i threw a rock at his car
He got so pissed at me and he almost tried to kill me then i told him about the cards and he was so happy.
Also on my account, i was at this sunday magic at a pizza place we have every week, and a newer player (small kid) Spilled soda all over my binder, ruining full playsets of foil shock lands and 5 Psy blasts (one foil, one beta)
I told him if he left this building i would kill him, then told him to give me his parents number. I then called his parents and told them i wanted the full price of the cards. I did get the money, but the cards were beyond it and money is less in my eyes then the cards themselves:-/
Oh well though, Stuff happens. just gotta keep pushing on
heres some helpfull advice, while playing mtg drinks will probably be around, if your playing at a pizza place(or anywhere else that serves food and drink as its main business) expect there to be a ton of drinks and just look after your stuff more vigilantly, stuff happends.
this did not happen to me but to a freind of mine, we are both in the military, he was deployed to Iraq last year and his wife decided to divorce him while he was overseas. Well he had this binder of cards.... to name a FEW ( i have seen this binder and... wow ) he had a signed Ancestral Recall from unlimited all the Guru Lands Signed by Teresa Neilson, a full page of misprinted and miscut FoW including a whole page of perfectly good ones, a full page of Foil BoP's from 7th all of the promos and judge promos from urza's saga up to the present ( including Balance, and a few others i cannot remember ) and other goodness, all of it got sold by his ex-wife on ebay while he was deployed.
