This program is very inspiring. With complete rules coverage, it would be entirely possible to write a machine learning algorithm to learn Magic. In fact, I hope to attempt this! This also means I'd like to help this product to reach full card coverage. Unfortunately, it will be several weeks before I can dive into this, and since I don't have time to investigate right now, could someone let me know the approximate card coverage (just a rough estimate) and if you can play locally? Thanks!
If you download xmage and start the launcher, you can start a server and client.
If you do that you can connect to localhost in the client and play against an AI.
Can anyone help me with installation of Xmage? I have never played or installed it, so I am trying a fresh install from the launcher and I keep getting hung up. Here is a typical dialog report on the launcher:

I already posed this question 6 days ago at the dev forums and have gotten no reply, though a dev did respond to another persons issue in that time. I took out the urls because on the dev forums they thought it looked like spam, and they are irrelevant anyway.
The urls that I blanked out are not the main url, they are where the launcher looks for files to install, but yes, my launcher is using the .de site. I just downloaded the launcher less than a week ago, so it is up to date.
Well, maybe you can help me there too. I wanted to do that when I first started having trouble, but I can't find the install files. When I go to xmage.de I get the option to download the launcher, but see nowhere to download the files to self install. I attached a screen grab of the page I am going to.
Turns out it was my weird house and it's messed up wifi signals. Moved into the room with the modem and it installed lickty split. Now I jsut have to figure it out.
now that I have Xmage running can anyone tell me if there is any way for me to play both players?
I got local host running and have played a few games against the AI, but it is a bit too stupid for what I want to do. I used to use cockatrice to do perliminary deck testing by testing a brew against some of the Modern tier one decks by playing both sides as well as I could. It is obviously nothing like playing against another person, but it was preliminary. The AI set to 10 still does dumb things like tapping Inkjmoth Nexus in order to animate that same Nexus. It doesn't seem to know how to counter, and I'm not sure I have ever seen it play a spell on my turn. If I am controlling both sides of the table I can do all of it.
I tried to do it last night and there did not seem to be a way.
Okay,
That solved that issue, but now I can only scry to the bottom. The only way to finish the scry action is to click on a card to put on the bottom of the libary. I don't see how to say that I want to keep the card on the top.
I have been trying the program and i have mixed feelings about it. I like it, I really do, I think it is a great software with potential but, at the same time, I see a lot of flaws. The first you find, and the most obvious in my opinion, is the fact that you can find problems when downloading the images of the cards; once you have downloaded them, you discover that nothing has been downloaded and you have to download them again... And again, and again, and again... I am sure that this problem is Java related, and that if you have the latest Java version you won't encounter this problem, but still, is a pain in the ass. I myself could only download the images correctly after installing the software in Linux... Which leads me to the second problem. For some reason, I could connect to the servers the first time I opened the software in Ubuntu, but after that, I was never able to connect again. I ended up copying the images folder from my installation in Ubuntu into my installation in Windows and playing from Windows. Long story short: downloading images is buggy under Windows 7, probably related to Java, with latest version in different computers didn't find problems, can't connect under Ubuntu after the first time using the software.
Apart from that, I like the software. It seems a bit slow, especially in the decision making field. It is really frustrating having to press the done button/F2 key ALL the time. I think the clock approach in Magic Duels is way better, it would be great if the developers took a look at it. But it is really good, I like it over Cockatrice. And the fact that you can choose what version of a card you use is simply fantastic.
Oh, just one more thing. I have added the software to my Steam library and added a custom image. For those of you using Steam, maybe you want to have a nice image for the software. This are two I have created. The first has the XMage logo, the second the MTG logo.
I have a lot of experience using the software in Linux, and I've never had the issue you describe. I can't believe it's an issue with the software.
You are connecting to a remote server, right? Not a local one? A local one doesn't start automatically, you have to start it yourself.
I have tried all the servers, and none of them work. Yesterday I tried to use the software again, and it didn't connect. I have never tried to reinstall the software or Java, maybe after doing it everything goes well, I don't know. Or maybe it's related to my distro. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 updated to the last version, what distro are you using?
Maybe there's a firewall blocking outbound connectionson "odd" ports? I am not familiar with what Ubuntu does by default, but I can assure you it's not a problem with the application.
Yeah, I have read the idea of this being a problem with the firewall before, but I don't actually know how to manage the firewall, so I'll just use the Windows version for now. Maybe in a future I can find a solution.
I cannot figure out how to get the program downloaded. i tried getting the launcher downloaded, but it refuses to work. It opens in Internet explorer but immediatly closes. Any help for the quickest easiest way to download? I have Windows 10
This is a super old thread but I noticed that there were a couple recent posts and a few not tooooo long ago. Anyways, I agree. I find XMage to be far superior to Cockatrice (because cheating is far less likely on XMage) and to MTGO (because XMage is free).
Xmage is super cool
Automatic rules enforcement is super useful
I'm quite good at rules but I still find situations which I treat as bugs at first but then I realize that I was mistaken
From vintage to standard, from vintage cubes to ogw drafts, from playing with bots to various commanders it does it all
It's pretty long, but very detailed and step-by-step guide on how to get it set up for repeated use without having to re-download card images.
I've also included a link to the Folder I uploaded to dropbox which has over 100 decks across Legacy/Pauper/Modern/Commander/Vintage/Tiny Leader.

It has it's own Java that it uses... Pretty sure I didn't have to do anything special when I installed it.
This is on Linux btw.
Thank you. That's what I wanted to hear. I'm going to try it then
