Legends 1 introduced a BUNCH of major mechanics for the first time:
Legendary (duh)
Multicolor
Enchant world
Bands with other
Rampage
That said, I agree with the sentiment of not hanging this whole set on 3-4 keyword mechanics that somehow define the "themes". I think there should be a lot of strange bedfellows: a little tribal here, a little graveyard there, etc. But I don't think the set will work if it's just 300+ one-offs. That's not how Legends 1 worked, anyway. There was still a bit of structure to it.
Okay cool. Awesome. Perfect. This is exactly what I was thinking and hoping to hear. That may have sounded like a rant, but it wasn't. It was an impassioned plea for legendarityness. Now that I think about it, maybe an expansion mechanic should be a must for the purple legendary reprints? It would, I think give us a parameter to work with and play in fairly well with your proposed flavor stuff.
P.S. - Bands was in Alpha.
Bastion of Hope

Venemous Flytrap (Common) 2G

Reach
Venemous Flytrap can block only creatures with flying.
Whenever Venemous Flytrap blocks a creature, that creature’s controller gets a poison counter.
Structurally, I'd like to draw a little inspiration from a set like Rise of the Eldrazi. I can see a lot of parallels, here. RoE had a central theme of "battlecruiser Magic", and this has a central theme of legendary cards. But RoE had a bunch of other stuff going on (level up, rebound, totem armor, Eldrazi spawn, a defender subtheme) that really didn't hew to the central theme. It was a hugely creative and fun set, but it wasn't "about" just one thing. It felt free, not boxed in. I'd say it was a lot like Legends 1 that way.
So, I'm saying, I don't think we need to shy away from set mechanics or themes, but they should be diverse and exciting. The set should be about dozens of different things, not just one thing.
Vaxoz (Mythic) 3

This is... unusual. And ******* amazing. It's a little weird in that it can't hit planeswalkers in the loyalty, though, and always goes for CMC reduction, and also kind of weird in that it kills all tokens and cards with mana cost 0 for as long as it's around. Like, ruleswise, the kinks need to be worked out, but holy crap, this is exactly the kind of thing we need.

I envision uncommon legends as really pushed uncommmons/weak-side rares in terms of raw power level.
Legends has 20 uncommon legends. That's probably the number they wound up with to make legendary matters theme relevant in Legends. Twenty feels like a good number to me. How many do yall think we should have?
The challenge will be to create 20 great uncommon legends.

I think 20 is a fine target number.
If it isn't happening, we need to brainstorm a way to address the duplicate legends in draft issue.
One keywordless way is to make them small - tiny leaders - so that quite simply they die easily. The flavor is that, though they're more powerful than average beings, they're relatively weak among legends. They could also be good mana sink candidates so that they're not especially desired in multiples. The mana sink abilities could show that they an become tuff when needed, but rent inherently as tuff as their rare and mythic brethren
As for Grandeur, I'm not a fan. We already have Exalted. Besides, discarding for an effect is quite feelbad anyways especially when the Grandeur creature gets axed right after the discard.

OK, I'm in rather strong agreement with you about grandeur, actually. I was just afraid that people assumed it would be in the set and would be sad not to see it. But, I don't really like it as a set mechanic. Feel-bad and narrow, I agree.
I still think it's maybe worth it to keep the original grandeur five in the purple rarities, and leave it at that. What do you think?
As for tiny leaders, I think that narrows the design spectrum more than I'd like, honestly. I think it will be hard to come up with 20 excellent uncommon legends, and if they all have to be little dudes, it will be nearly impossible. I think there needs to be some kind of mechanic to address the "I have my 2nd / 3rd copy of this legend jamming up my hand" problem.
I dunno, I think Grandeur is a really clever way to make extra legendaries still feel powerful & special in their own way. I think it's really different from Exalted, and it wasn't ever used as a set mechanic, since it only showed up on a few cards. IMO it makes sense to make uncommon legendaries have better play in multiples, either with Grandeur or with some other effects. Grandeur is nice specifically because it preserves the "specialness" of extra copies.
In the spirit of creativity, let's design as many "grandeur is happening" cards as we want, and as many "grandeur isn't happening" cards as we want, and see where we are once we get down the road a bit.
But, I think we agree that if grandeur is happening, that uncommon is the space to do it?
...it makes sense to make uncommon legendaries have better play in multiples, either with Grandeur or with some other effects. Grandeur is nice specifically because it preserves the "specialness" of extra copies.
I think our energies would be better spent on some other effect.
Otherwise, are we seriously considering 20 uncommons with Grandeur? IMO that's far too much space dedicated to a feedbad mechanic.
How about the option to make something legendary some how? Legendary Kicker?
Okay cool. Awesome. Perfect. This is exactly what I was thinking and hoping to hear. That may have sounded like a rant, but it wasn't. It was an impassioned plea for legendarityness. I think there needs to be some kind of mechanic to address the "I have my 2nd / 3rd copy of this legend jamming up my hand" problem.
I love this plan. I'm excited to be a part of it.

In the spirit of creativity, let's design as many "grandeur is happening" cards as we want, and as many "grandeur isn't happening" cards as we want, and see where we are once we get down the road a bit.
But, I think we agree that if grandeur is happening, that uncommon is the space to do it?
I think our energies would be better spent on some other effect.
Otherwise, are we seriously considering 20 uncommons with Grandeur? IMO that's far too much space dedicated to a feedbad mechanic.
How about the option to make something legendary some how? Legendary Kicker?
