The duplicate comes from Maverick Bigshot, which destroys a creature then destroys itself if you didn't pitch an artifact. I think this can easily be changed to -5/-5 for variety while keeping the same effect.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.

I still like mizzium morpher personally, but i'd be fine with relegating that to flavor text material instead of the card name itself.
Like "One of the Prophet's greatest gifts was this strange device. It seems to take the form of anything it needs to." as a hint towards Mizzium Transreliquat.
Mercurial Gear... Hmm... What about Transposable Engine?
And the people asked him "Great Prophet, was is this new gift you have brought us?"
And the prophet replied "What do you want it to be?"
-The Brass Scriptures
That's probably way too long, and thinking about it with the reminder text for upgrade this thing isn't going to have flavor text anyway...

Transposable Engine is a rare, so it doesn't need reminder text. Let me take a look if your flavour text fits.
It's not too bad, if put into a single paragraph, but borders on wordy. What say we cut out the "and the people" line, leaving it with "And the prophet replied "What do you want it to be?" -The Brass Scriptures
The "no reminder text" rule usually only applies to rares when the actual wording is too long. For instance, every rare equipment in Mirrodin featured the reminder text except one, Sycthe of the Wretched, because it's rules text took up so much space.
Then again, upgrade is pretty grokable since it's literally equipment for artifacts, so we may not have an issue.

We could probably get away with one Component not having reminder text. Especially since this one has some juicy flavor behind it that requires the flavor text for outside people to get what its implying.
As for the colorless justifications for our hybrid cards this is what I've come up with...
Destroying land seems like it's kind of sketchy. There are only two artifacts that destroy lands. (Ark of Blight & Sundering Titan)
I'm also not sure about the bounce spells (Plight of the Commoner & Steam Geyser) as there are no artifacts that straight bounce creatures/non-land permanents.
I can't find an artifact justification for Steam Dream.
Necrotech Harvest justification seems kind of iffy since the only artifact that Edicts an opponent is Rakdos Riteknife.
That's all I got for right now. What do you guys think we should do?

"Artifact" isn't always the same as "colorless", just sayin.
How many cards do we have that destroy lands?
For bounce, I feel like that's an acceptable bleed, at least in terms of Steam Geyser. Plight of the commoner, on the other hand, does seem a bit strong in retrospect.
For Steam Dream, try tapping artifacts like Tumble Magnet or Trip Noose. For 8 mana I think the "doesn't untap" is fine.
Necrotech harvest is also pushing it a bit. I think an edict effect for 5 mana is fine in any color, but i'm not sure the steam-powered bonus is acceptable.

You're right, Colorless =/= Artifacts. I was just using "Artifact" in this case because "Colorless" also includes stuff like the Eldrazi and lands. I see your point though.
As for LD in colorless, we've got two (Crumbling Infrastructure & Helldozer 2.0) both of which are Rares.
I've got no problem with Steam Geyser but Plight of the Commoner is pushed a little further than I'd like. Can we replace it with something else?
I didn't think about the tapping artifacts when I was searching Magic cards info. You're right Steam Dream should be fine.
Finally, the Edict might be ok... I went looking again and found It That Betrays which is sort of justification for that combination of effects.

Perhaps it should tap creatures instead of bouncing them?
Umm... That seems good but how about this instead...
Energetic Infusion Sorcery [C]
Tap target untapped creature you control. If you do, add to your mana pool, where X is that creature's converted mana cost.

Near-functional reprint of Energy Tap. It could just be this instead...
Temporary Layoff :1mana::sym2u: Instant [C] Steampowered - Tap up to two target creatures. If only colorless mana was spent to cast this spell, those creatures don't untap during their controller's next untap step.
