We bled rituals back into black for this set, though always with some kind of trade off (as opposed to the red kind which is usually free. Yes Infernal Plunge exists.)

It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
Rituals are never free: they always cost a card. Steamdealer doesn't really have a cost, and Mana Pollution's permanent sacrifice really feels more red than black.
The timing of Pollution's ability makes it a little useless (also a red kind of thing to do.)
Yeah i don't like those designs very much either, i was mostly just explaining why they showed up as they did, as opposed to what you would expect out side of this block

This set may be a really good set to show some "good" black/red guys as well as "bad" black/red guys. Lots of people who wanted a better life went out west to try their hand, so maybe we could do an "Oil tycoon/Railroad baron" kind of card.

I really love the flavor of a dirty card trick in a card game with cowboys in it. I'm not so sure how much I like my actual design here, I just wanted a Black card that worked well with spellslingers and felt like cheating.

So like Pure Intentions? Pretty chaff card if you ask me. The spellslingers are already really good limited creatures; if you insist on having a card to power them up further, something less blunt would be nice:

But those are the best kind of cards. Interactions like this that give a player an "aha!" moment are really nice things to have. This would be an uncommon, of course. It's also nice to avoid making the 'slinger's activated abilities even more costly.

Cheating at Cards seems like an excellent opportunity for one of those expensive red rare minigame cards. Something poker-esque (though blackjack is probably easier) even.
On the contrary, we have the opportunity to do a card that is both extremely flavorful and very playable (at least in Limited). I see no reason to pass and do yet another crap red rare.
Your Squee trinket is rather fun, but I feel it doesn't have the same elegance as Darksteel Relic : most players already know that Squee, Goblin, Nabab is quite good, and won't feel especially clever with this card.
Specifically with regards to new players, in response to l00ke00's comment on new player's initial reaction to the card. I would not expect new players, nor a large percentage of somewhat experienced players, to know who Squee, Goblin Nabob is. Experienced players don't need to feel clever with that interaction; they'll be happy to have an enabler when they need it.
This doesn't have to be the entire card, either. A trinket-worthy ability wouldn't be out of place here either; "sacrifice ~: regenerate target creature," "sacrifice ~: add to your mana pool," or ":1mana:, sacrifice ~: add one mana of any color to your mana pool" are all effects that could make this less relic-y.
Finally, there's nothing particularly flavorful about the proposed design of cheating at cards. In fact, I feel like there's a something of a disconnect between its mechanics and its flavor. Sure, having cards that I shouldn't => I don't discard, but that same flavor could be applied to a ponder type effect, or a monty-style effect, or a fun red spell. (there is a demographic that likes those, even if neither you or I are part of it.)

Cheating At Cards has a few things going for it.
1) Players with corny senses of humor can joke about how their opponent cheats at cards. I relish the opportunity!
2) It's rather comboriffic without being infinite. Always fun- remember Ghost Husk and Promise of Bunrei? if they reprint those 2 cards in the next core set I'll die happy. Same kinda thing here.
3) It's gonna make limited spellshapers have some steam. Let's be honest here, between clockwork and spellshapers and the fast mana, this is looking to be a pretty explosive limited. Totally fun, but some like to take their time.

Subbak, I like your Cog Hunter idea, but I think you should shift it to the r/g faction. They are supposed to be the frontiersman, and r/g has artifact destruction naturally. I'd just change it to "artifact" with counters, as it plays much nicer with existing cards.

The thing is, it makes a lot more sense when you don't discard to pay for a spellslinger or to a looter's effect : it really feels like you're rigging something in your favor. That's why I'm not sure it should be instant speed (also hosing enemy discard is not in Black's color pie, but more in Green's, I think).
From a card-advantage/mechanical standpoint though, unless you're activating multiple 'slingers in the same turn (or one that requires more than one discard), you're still discarding a card (and spending extra mana for the privilege).

Poirut- one who deals in dead bodies in any fashion (based on french)

I really love the flavor of a dirty card trick in a card game with cowboys in it. I'm not so sure how much I like my actual design here, I just wanted a Black card that worked well with spellslingers and felt like cheating.

Over all I feel like the Cheating at Cards Flavor is a must hit, I don't know that this card is how we have to do it but it must be done. The contested Trinket is really cool, I'd like to see it become legendary, rare, and get an upside affect besides never leaving.

Cheating at Cards seems like an excellent opportunity for one of those expensive red rare minigame cards. Something poker-esque (though blackjack is probably easier) even.

Finally, there's nothing particularly flavorful about the proposed design of cheating at cards. In fact, I feel like there's a something of a disconnect between its mechanics and its flavor. Sure, having cards that I shouldn't => I don't discard, but that same flavor could be applied to a ponder type effect, or a monty-style effect, or a fun red spell. (there is a demographic that likes those, even if neither you or I are part of it.)

1) Players with corny senses of humor can joke about how their opponent cheats at cards. I relish the opportunity!
2) It's rather comboriffic without being infinite. Always fun- remember Ghost Husk and Promise of Bunrei? if they reprint those 2 cards in the next core set I'll die happy. Same kinda thing here.
3) It's gonna make limited spellshapers have some steam. Let's be honest here, between clockwork and spellshapers and the fast mana, this is looking to be a pretty explosive limited. Totally fun, but some like to take their time.
