That's just not how these effects are templated. Having things "gain" abilities "until end of turn" is just how that sort of thing is worded and I frankly don't see why to do it any other way.

There is a reason behind it - to save two lines in the textbox of a modal spell card. I'm surprised you would say such a thing. There's stuff in Magic's history that just weren't done a particular way, but now they are.
Well, I mean, it's still gaining the ability no matter how you template it.
Before spell = no flying.
After spell = flying.
So it went from 0 to 1. It gained the ability.
Now, I guess you could make the argument that the economy of saving two words is worth the confusion of the template no longer describing exactly what the card does, and that people will grok it just fine, but... I'll counter-argue that. Mostly because, you know, it's two words. And because some people really go out of their way to be stupid.
Reading this over and over again I think I've found what is weird here. Because you aren't having the creatures gain the ability you aren't interacting in layer 6 as expected, but in layer 8 (not a real layer but it makes talking about it easier and technically functions as a layer) rule changing effects, this is where indestructible granting effects were, like Rootborn Defense, before keywording. This is weird, but not a problem; overall not something that should be done all the time but if your card needs it, it should function.

Thanks. Yeah, I remember that "is indestructible". Weird.
