February will be Return month! Planar revisits have been some of Wizards' most popular sets in recent years. This month, you will be designing cards for a return to a plane that has yet to be revisited in a Magic set. Be wary of the design choices you make; the cards you design will influence your design limitations for future rounds this month.
Semifinal Challenge:
Counting your round 3 submission as a card in a four-card loose vertical cycle, design the remainder of that vertical cycle. The cards in the cycle must have the same color identity.
If your round 3 submission was a rare, you will make a common, an uncommon, and a mythic rare. If your round 3 submission was a mythic rare, you will make a common, an uncommon, and a rare.
The connections can be mechanical or flavorful, as long as there is a specific connection referenced among all four cards.
Hint: There is a loose vertical cycle centered on every planeswalker in the Planeswalker Deck products.
Make sure to include rarities on all cards. This is very important for this challenge.
PLEASE NOTE: This month will NO LONGER use the "mandatory top 3" rule. Critiques and top 3s will each be worth one bonus point per round but it will be possible to score points and advance even without submitting a top 3. This will also be done on a trial basis; future months may once again require top 3s from contestants.
Round 1 — Open to Everyone (Feb 1th-6th)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (Feb 7th–12th)
Rounds 1 and 2 Critiques (Due Feb 15th)
Top 8 — Open to top 8 finishers (Feb 16th–19th)
Top 8 Critiques (Due Feb 23rd)]
Top 4 — Open to top 4 finishers from last round (Feb 24th–26th)
Top 4 Critiques (Due Mar 2)

1/1We don't have any Akki samurai in kamigawa, but this is begging to be one. 3/4I would have liked to see this not drop counters on demons as a tribute to the Demon-Ogre theme in kamigawa, but overall is fine. The signet stands out as the only non-black and non-creature in the cycle, but otherwise the common recursion mechanic really ties these together
uncommon - this feels like a strong common, comparison that leaps to mind is Recover
mythic - this seems wildly variable and the upside might be a bit low for an 8-mana mythic
picnic_bomber (Kamigawa) Overall, I felt like there were some rarity issues with these.
common - This is a fine card, but definitely feels like it is pushing hard against the uncommon line
uncommon - I like this card a lot, but definitely seems like a rare
rare - seems highly annoying in the best way, but feels like an uncommon
mirrodin71 (Kamigawa) Overall, I felt like these were a bit too tightly coupled. And that they definitely sapped a lot of the “mythic-ness” out of your previous card. I really wanted to see something splashy, a la Necroskitter or Kulrath Knight to really work the -1/-1 counters angle.
common - I really feel this needs to be a 0 cost artifact, but that would probably make it too good
uncommon - pretty good
rare - this needs some evasion, and then it would be a hit
Cardz5000 (Shadowmoor) - Overall, these are pretty good for me.
common - okay, but untapping would be better if it was more of a threat
uncommon - I get where you’re going with this, but the cost seems high and the effect feels so awkward with the old wording
rare - awesome wrath twist, but feel like it should be Revocation, no?
