November MCC Round 1
Mark the Graves
When you have to explain a joke it’s probably not a good joke, but here we go. This month will be all about the most recent set, Guilds of Ravnica, and it has both guild watermarks and a graveyard theme, with three out of five guild mechanics caring about the graveyard. And for those that might not know, I am a huge Linkin Park fan, and “Mark the Graves” happens to be the title of one of my favorite songs by them. With that said, let’s go to the part you’re all here for: the challenges. And as you may have guessed, watermarks are involved.
Main Challenge: Design a colored card that would get a guild watermark in the Guilds of Ravnica set. Please see clarifications for the requirements a card must satisfy to get a guild watermark.
The card is supposed to come from the Guilds of Ravnica set, both in flavor and mechanics.
The guild you choose to design a card for must be one of the five included in the Guilds of Ravnica set (Dimir, Selesnya, Izzet, Golgari, and Boros) and will influence future rounds.
Subchallenge 1 - Your card is not mythic.
Subchallenge 2 - Your card has converted mana cost 3 or greater.
Main challenge
According to R&D’s rules, a colored card gets a guild watermark if at least one of the following three conditions is true for it:
• The card has the guild mechanic. The main challenge specifically asks for a card that’s supposed to be from the Guilds of Ravnica set. This means that the guild mechanics we’re talking about are the ones from GRN (surveil for Dimir, convoke for Selesnya, jump-start for Izzet, undergrowth for Golgari, and mentor for Boros). Guild mechanics from previous Ravnica blocks are NOT allowed in this challenge.
• The card is a multicolored card that is exactly the two colors of its guilds. This includes both gold and hybrid cards. Both colors of mana must be there in the card’s mana cost.
• The card is a monocolored card of one of the guild’s colors but has a two-colored color identity corresponding to its guild. This means that the two colors of the guilds can be found one in the card’s mana cost and the other as a colored mana symbol in the card’s rules text. Examples: Screeching Griffin, Flash Conscription.
To pass the main challenge, your card must satisfy at least one of those three requirements. If none of the three requirements are met, the card does not pass the main challenge and is DQ’ed.
If your card is a split card, each half has to satisfy individually one of the requirements and be able to get a guild watermark, just like the split cards in Guild of Ravnica. The requirement met by one half can be different from the one the other half satisfies though.
Please, no DFCs or Kamigawa-style flip cards (the real "flip cards"). There are none in GRN and your card is supposed to come from GRN.
The card can be a regular rare. It can also be a common or uncommon. Everything but mythic is fine.
Subchallenge 2
Remember that the CMC of a split card is now the sum of the CMCs of the two halves. This means that if you choose to design a split card, each single half can have a CMC less than three as long as the sum is three or more.
If you have any additional question about any of the challenges, feel free to ask in the discussion thread.
Design - (X/3) Appeal: Do the different player psychographics (Timmy/Johhny/Spike) have a use for the card? (X/3) Elegance: Is the card easily understandable at a glance? Do all the flavor and mechanics combined as a whole make sense?
Development - (X/3) Viability: How well does the card fit into the color wheel? Does it break or bend the rules of the game? Is it the appropriate rarity? (X/3) Balance: Does the card have a power level appropriate for contemporary constructed/limited environments without breaking them? Does it play well in casual and multiplayer formats? Does it create or fit into a deck/archetype? Does it create an oppressive environment?
Creativity - (X/3) Uniqueness: Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel “fresh”? (X/3) Flavor: Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?
Polish - (X/3) Quality: Points deducted for incorrect spelling, grammar, and templating. (X/2) *Main Challenge: Was the main challenge satisfied? Was it approached in a unique or interesting way? Does the card fit the intent of the challenge? (X/2) Subchallenges: One point awarded per satisfied subchallenge condition.
Total: X/25

A helpful tip for those formatting their cards (I wrote it quite some time ago but it's still totally valid):
A reminder to everyone: In the MCC, putting rarity on cards is mandatory! If you don't put a rarity on your card, expect huge deductions in both Viability AND Quality.
Also, you should format your text cards accordingly to the forum rules (see the "this formatting looks best" spoiler in the linked OP). Again, expect deductions in Quality otherwise.
