Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!
Theme
September in the CCL is going to be Defenses Month! Because not everything has to be aggressive, and slowing the game down is often healthy.
Challenge
Design a card that prevents damage to something other than itself.
Make sure to include a rarity.
The damage prevention can be achieved through any means - for example, protection includes preventing damage so granting protection to a creature, planeswalker, or player would pass.
Stay tuned for August's CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for September's CCL!
PLEASE NOTE: This month will continue the use of the "Mandatory Top 3 Rule." For this month, you must submit a Top 3 during a round's critique period in order to receive any points for the round. Submitting critiques as well will be worth 2 bonus points in the round.
Your submissions are due Wednesday, September 12th, 23:59 EST.
Schedule

While unique, I don't really feel like this guy is very legendary (granted story or set design could easily justify it.) Otherwise, this seems fine in helping to mitigate any hit over 3 (but not too efficiently). I feel like an extra toughness and lifelink would have made this. As is I could see this occasionally showing up in the 99 in commander.
Akrasan Aegis2WW
Creature - Angel {R}
Flying
At the beginning of each upkeep, choose another creature or planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to that permanent this turn.
3/4
This feels too efficient at 4 mana, I probably would have settled for picking a target at your upkeep and protecting it until your next turn, like an inverse Gideon of the Trials +1.
Essence Exchanger1
Artifact - Equipment (U)
Equip 2
Sacrifice Equipped Creature: Put X Healing counters on ~, where X is the sacrificed creature's toughness.
Remove a healing counter from ~: Prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to Equipped creature this turn.
This changes up combat math and battlefield complexity enough that it shouldn't be uncommon. healing counter could use a different name as well.
Worried Mother2W
Creature — Human (U)
Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.) 1W, T: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to the creature paired with Worried Mother this turn. The tie of love between mother and child is eternal. Nothing can shatter it, ever.
2/3
the placement of 'this turn' makes it feel like they need to have paired this turn, but is probably proper templating even if confusing. She seems VERY beefy for a classless human.
Daring Defender1W
Creature - Human Soldier (Uncommon)
Defender
Ambition 1 (As this creature enters the battlefield, put the top card of your library into your graveyard. This creature enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each creature card put into your graveyard this way.) 1, Remove a +1/+1 counter from Daring Defender: Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn.

This feels weird that it fogs everything, should probably just target a single other creature and could drop that cost to W
Terrashield1RW
Enchantment (U)
Sacrifice a land: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to target creature this turn. The Eldrazi may be gone but the land still protects its young.
I feel like this should cost at least 1 more (or have a mana cost on the activation) super annoying in limited, and I would have prefered to see a bit more red here (white can sac lands just fine on its own.)
Zemoo
This is very complicated and delayed damage redirect ability. It works, that's what I can say. Looks like it happened to be my favorite card in my bracket.
Marco
I like the mechanic (you probaly know it from MCC thread (also don't forget to post in Round 2)) but the repeatable Fog ability for such cheap cost which is 1 plus a +1/+1 counter makes me feel uncomfortable.
Hemlock
Trading 2 life for 4 damage feels like receiveng only 50% of the damage but in the lifegain deck which are obviously WB it can be extremely annoying. Just sayin.
Cardz5000
This is oppressive but also almost fair since it works with its own tokens anlo and costs mana. Also another level of complexity here because you have to track which tokens were created by it.
Gerrard's Mom
This is hella strong finisher but please care to explain the point of using it when it's not your turn. Multiplayer only?
Subject16
This is very narrow yet conflicting with itself. What do you want from enchanted creature with +2/+2 bonus when it can't do anything? I guess this is just an issue of Bestow when the bonus is always equal to P/T of enchantment creature. Looks like a weird card from Time Spiral block that works strangely and some tryhard Johnny can get real value from.
Strong designs all around here. Tough call for this.
Koopa: This is a good design that's very simple and straightforward. It's colors fit fine and the flavor of the card sounds about right. I understand that uncommons don't have to be complex designs and that's perfectly fine, but I still wish this card had a bit more to it.
Zemoo: This is interesting, but as a limited player I think this might be too good at uncommon. Essentially it's a removal deterrent as you can just get rid of your equipped creature for free if it gets spot removed, and it then makes it more difficult to kill the next guy. I would up this to a rare and maybe even add a mana cost to the sacrificing. That aside, it's a really cool design!
Marco: Ambition is a pretty nice mechanic similar to Explore, but it doesn't feel very white in name or effect. Ambition is one of black's defining traits whilst white is more Selflessness, and self-milling is something white has never done except with the Explore mechanic which appears on exactly two cards. The design however is very cool and all it would need fixing is flavour I feel.
Hemlock: This is a pretty nice design, but I feel like this effectively halves all damage dealt to you. It's definitely an investment that you can use to your advantage in formats like Commander where you have a lot of life to spend. But it's also limited in that in only prevents damage dealt to you and not to anything else you control. The only thing I'd change maybe would to have the damage prevention target any player so you can play the political game in Commander.
Cardz5000: This is a strong design that's pretty pushed in terms of power level, but the flavour is great. The only worry is that there might be memory issues with figuring out which tokens were created by the Matriarch and which ones weren't. My suggested fix would be to reword it simply to "dinosaur tokens" which expands her protectiveness but also stops her affecting other tokens she might create. Love the design and flavour of the card!
Gerrard's Mom: My god this design is cool. I love it simply because of the alternative cost and the many ways you can exploit it. You can cast this when your opponent attacks you to make favourable trades at the cost of your life total, or you can cast this in a multiplayer environment to help/ruin one of your opponents. The name and flavour fit really well, and without that additional casting requirement this would have been a win-more instant for limited use only, but I really want this card to exist now for political reasons!
@raptorchan
It doesn't really half damage. It can only half multiples of 4. It's useless agains 1 and 2 damage and less effective agains other sums (3, 6, 7). The circle of protwction wording makes it useless against multiple activations like pestilence.
RaikouRaider: Nice protecting vibe, super solid for limited and quite aggressive in some way. I like that it both allows some attacks while also being good at defense.
Netn10: Again, aggressive and with a quite impactful ability when it comes to back up your combat math when things get odd. I know that it doesn't literally prevent, but you put damage prevention in an interesting package.
Zemoo: Interating Idea, reminds me.of a mix of worthy cause ane Fylgya. I like that you cab stack ip the damage prevention counters from creatures that are about to die and its usefulness as a sacrifice engine.
Koopa: God, I love this. It's so simple and caan be veey powerdul. I'm personally a fan of Prophecy, I think one of the most exciting limited enviroments I played. The pricelessness of having a useful effect at hand at any time is not to be underestimated, as it can really help you close up the game. This effect does mess your opponent's combat math.
Bravelion: While I think the card has good flavor and is a nicw callback to mother of runes, I do feel it's a bit of a miss that soulbond feel so one-way.
Marco: A bit too powerful if you happen to be able to put a +1/+1 counter on it eveey tuen (Even Ley line will do!).
@Raptorchan - if you cast it while they are attacking you, it uh...Blood of the Martyrs all your creatures so you take the damage instead of them (they can still damage opponent's creatures).
Pretty great and hilarious. I'm not sure if "token created by" technology exists right now - like what if you populate? But they oculd probably find a way to do it or, more likely, use some other qualifier like all tokens or Dinosaurs with less power or something.
I feel like "this turn" should come right after "dealt" for one. This is a new thing for soulbond afaik and a flavorful nod to Mother of Runes. It's not bad but a bit clunky to use and I kind of feel with the flavor that the Mother should take the damage.
Hmm I don't see what makes this particularly red, it's like Trenching Steed for everyone. I guess the short-term gain aspect of it is red. I would be hard-pressed to include this in Limited though.
I don't think paying five is really worth the effect of transferring one shot of a creature's toughness to another creature. Something that built up counters as they died and gave them absorb for those counters would have been a more exciting take.
Most Limited decks don't make it above 50% creatures and even Constructed rarely gets much higher, so your odds of getting a 1/4 with a single Fog are just not very good. The mechanic is interesting but I don't really get what it represents...denying jobs to other potential applicants or something? I don't really like the feelbad of milling my own creatures though.
Sure, white at least has a recognizable hate on big things mechanical space, so preventing 1 or 2 damage from batches of 3 or more is interesting. It might as well be a static replacement though, since you would always want to do it for anything threatening to be 3 or more. Either that or it needs a mana cost, and maybe in that case it could prevent half the damage rounding up?
Hmm I see from your comment that I forgot to consider using it twice, although that comes up pretty rarely outside of EDH. Intense math doesn't change my ranking.

Creature — Human (U)
Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)

I like 4 designs a lot, I will sleep on it!

Hmm I see from your comment that I forgot to consider using it twice, although that comes up pretty rarely outside of EDH. Intense math doesn't change my ranking.
