I've always been a huge fan of Kung-Fu movies and the ancient warrior culture of the Far-East. Needless to say, when I first started to play Magic (around the time Shards came out), I was very excited to buy cards from Kamigawa block. Unfortunately, like most people, I was pretty disappointed by what I bought. I hope that Wizards revisits this block soon and does the subject matter proper justice this time around.
With that said, in January's CCL we will be indulging my fantasy by making cards for this next installment of Kamigawa.....
Challenge
Make a non-legendary creature that could fit in a Return to Kamigawa block. Your creature should include one of the creature types from the top 8/quarter finals round, but not the type you chose in the quarterfinals round. Again, the creature types are: Ninja, Samurai, or Monk. Your card must include a new mechanic for the chosen creature type. Your card can include creature types other than the chosen type, but it must include the chosen type.
Basically, if you made a Monk last round, you must make a Ninja or Samurai this round. If you made a Samurai last round, you must make a Ninja or Monk this round. If you made a Ninja last round, you must make a Samurai or Monk this round.

Diligent Disciple (Uncommon) 2GW
Creature - Panda Monk
2/4 Transcend - As long as you have less life than an opponent, Diligent Disciple has hexproof and indestructible. Though the fates are against me, destiny will not be denied.
Takenuma ShadowbladeBB
Creature - Rat Ninja (U)
Menace Ambush - When Takenuma Shadowblade enters the battlefield, you may reveal any number of Ninja cards from your hand. Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of cards revealed this way.
2/1
Ambush is an ability word that, when certain conditions are met, allows you to reveal any number of Ninja cards from your hand to produce a certain effect. (This is not limited to creature cards as I believe a future Kamigawa block is among the best chances for tribal to return. If tribal wasn't in said block, ambush would be creatures only.)
It's kinda difficult to take the same challenge for second time, so I will go with Monk mechanic I've designed before for another game.
Orochi Pathfinder1GG
Creature - Snake Monk (U)
Whenever Orochi Pathfinder deals combat damage to a player, put a +1/+1 counter on it.
Meditate 1G(1G: Move any number of counters from another creature you control onto this creature. Meditate only as a sorcery.)
3/2
So I've thought the mechanic through, folks, and I've come up with a potential solution. Enjoy! (or don't! You're all judges!)
Enlightened Wanderer1G
Creature - Human Monk (R)
Trample Middle Path - At the beginning of your end step, if you control a tapped and untapped creature, reveal the top card of your library. If it's a land card, you may put it onto the battlefield tapped. If you do, put two +1/+1 counters on Enlightened Wanderer. "A step forward is wasted without reflection on steps past."
1/1
Poisoned Chalice StudentB
Creature - Rat Ninja {U}
Deathtouch
Infiltrate 1B(1B: Exile this card from your hand. While you control an attacking or blocking creature, you may remove a creature you control from combat, untap it, and put this creature into play in its place. Infiltrate only as a sorcery.)
1/1 The true danger of poison is not on the battlefield, but in the kitchen.
Ronin of the Sanguine Horde3RR
Creature - Ogre Samurai (R)
Haste Outnumbered - Whenever two or more creatures block the same creature or a creature blocks two or more creatures, creatures you control get +2/+0 until end of turn. "I relish the chance to feast on you ALL!"
4/4
I don't think I'm going to be around to tonight to close out the entry portion of the round. It looks like everybody has their card in. Everybody has until 23:59 EST tonight to make any changes to their card. After that, people may feel free to begin submitting critiques and their top 3. Please judge each entry other than your own. You have until 23:59 EST Friday, January 27th to submit your critiques. If that's too tight a deadline for anybody, please PM me and we can talk about extending it a day, but I'd love to see the month continue to run on time. Thanks.
Edit: The submission portion of the round is over. The judgment day is upon us!

Remba - As I stated last round with regards to bravelion's submission, mechanics that want you to hold on to a full grip of cards usually don't play well, especially for an aggressive tribe like Ninjas. This is a little better than bravelion's wisdom mechanic, but ultimately it has the same flaws as amplify, which was not terribly well-liked. The card itself is pretty serviceable, quite strong, even; it's a playable effect even when you're only revealing one Ninja card.
Raptorchan - I liked meditate in Kolzag, but there were a lot of reasons that keyword worked in that mini-set and Kamigawa wouldn't necessarily have those conditions. It inherently requires a lot of +1/+1 counters in the set and it does nothing on its own, which is a strike against it. Still, it feels good as a Monk mechanic and I like Orochi Pathfinder itself as a keystone card for the meditate draft archetype, if there were to be such a thing.
Legend - I liked the original transcend better in terms of originality and "different"-feeling gameplay - build-a-creatures like level up and the Volvers are inherently fun, if sometimes overly complex. Transcend as it stands is serviceable and does lead to good gameplay but is sort of unoriginal and boring - it feels like it's cribbing very heavily from both dethrone and fateful hour. Also, Panda would most likely be Bear in the typeline, because they actually are, unlike "Koala Bears" and other misnomers.
IcariiFA - This is probably the ideal version of middle path; I like the Buddhist-feeling theme of "moderation" in gameplay by letting some of your guys attack but leaving some behind to block, or using some tap abilities but not others. Enlightened Wanderer is a sick rare beater and might get out of hand quickly, but hey, it's fragile to start with and requires multiple conditions to be hit (middle path AND getting a land) to get big.
FortunaImperatrixMundi - Infiltrate is a heck of a lot like ninjutsu, and it's possibly way too confusing for common, but I like how simple and intuitive the reminder text is and the flavor of Poisoned Chalice Student is pretty great.

Simple, understandable, viable, can be activated well even without any specific things like menace, forces your opponent to make tough decisions. I am impressed. FortunaImperatrixMundi
Quite nice variation of ninjutsu. But feels worse because it's not a real combat trick like original Ninjutsu - your opponent will always know which ninjas you may infiltrate with right now. Still nice work, I am not displeased. IcariiFA
More wide variation of Raid - you also can tap creatures for something else than attack. Nice, yeah, but maybe I am not buddhist enough to see the real beauty of this mechanic *laughs* Remba
Remember Amplify? Me neither. Legend
Not a big fan of mechanics like Fateful Hour, at first. Maybe it's just me, but I always think: "Hey, you are supposed to win, not lose" . I also think it appears in wrong colors - white and green are mostly about lifegain While Hellbent feels like a red/black (mostly red due to aggressive play strategy) mechanic done right, it feels more like red/black mechanic done wrong.
]Remba: I do like rat ninjas, and this card offers a lot of value as it's a solid body that comes down early enough to abuse ambush. I just don't like ambush as a more general mechanic. Between wanting to keep cards in hand to actually do something and forcing tribal... just not a fan. Bad top deck as the game goes on too. PS - Add flavor text when you got the room! Raptorchan: Solid card value wise, but mediate does nothing for the card on it's own here. I get that this will have an environment of monks to pass counters around to, but as a stand alone card it feels almost like a wasted line. It doesn't restrict you just to a monk tribe though and can play well with a number of other cards in a block and outside it. Oh, and I don't get the flavor of mediate here. Why am I taking power from others? Legend: I don't think the name of your mechanic fits the flavor. As for the mechanic itself, I think we can agree we've seen it before. It comes up a lot on these boards and isn't generally well received. I second the notion that this kind of mechanic would flow better in RB. Still waiting on a bunch of crits here and I'm tired. We'll wait until morning at least to close out the crits portion of the round.

The card itself is fair and useful though, I grant you that. The right support could make it fun and dangerous.
FortunaImperatrixMundi: I'm confused, does this even work? How can I use an ability that only can be used when something I control is attacking or blocking AND be restricted to sorcery speed? I feel like I'm missing something here. I get your Add to dictionary inspiration, but I don't understand how this card even functions.
void_nothing: Strangly here, a red card whose ability is much easier to use defensively than offensively. The way this mechanic will likely play out feels more white, but totally boros colors are doable. The ability word itself take a second to grok, but once you get it its easy.
