Spectral Procession, taken from magicthegathering.com, by Jeremy Enecio and Wizards of the Coast
Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!
Theme
This month will be a loving tribute to the most important BBcode tags in this forum: the venerable [mana][/mana] tag.
Challenge
Design a card with one or more monohybrid ((2/W), (2/U), (2/B), (2/R), or (2/G)) symbols in its rules text but NOT in its mana cost.
The symbol for white monohybrid mana in mana tags is {2W} and so on for the other colors.
Make sure to include a rarity.
PLEASE NOTE: This month will NO LONGER use the "mandatory top 3" rule. Critiques and top 3s will each be worth one bonus point per round but it will be possible to score points and advance even without submitting a top 3. This will also be done on a trial basis; future months may once again require top 3s from contestants.
Anyone can enter this first round! Your submissions are due Wednesday, July 10th, 23:59 EST.
Schedule
Round 1 — Open to Everyone (July 1st-5th)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (July 6th–10th)
Rounds 1 and 2 Critiques (Due July 13th)
Top 6 — Open to top 6 finishers (July 14th–17th)
Top 6 Critiques (Due July 20th)
Final (End of month, winner determined by public poll)
IMPORTANT NOTE: This will be a shortened CCL month as it is - now for sure - the last one that will be officially supported on MTGSalvation. For that reason, deadlines will be strictly enforced, aiming to be absolutely finished before 7/31. MTGNexus is complete and will open to public in mid-July. As of August, the home of the CCL will be MTGNexus.

I'm a simple Magic player since 1 year ago from China. Now I live in New Jersey.
Achiorl, Meadows Sentry2GW
Legendary Creature - Centaur Archer (R)
Vigilance, reach T, (2/R): Create an artifact trap token with "Whenever one or more creatures attack you, sacrifices this. If you do, this deals 1 damage to each attacking creature." The only thing hunted among the Harchon Meadows are enemies of the wilderness.
3/4
Overheated Forge3
Artifact (R)
Equipment spells you cast cost 1 less to cast. (2/R)(2/R)(2/R), sacrifice Overheated Forge: Overheated Forge deals X damage to each creature and each player, where X is the amount of mana spent to activate this ability. The purest fuel makes the hottest fire.
Hemlock: Short term tax, able to hamper Storm or other combo decks, as well as potentially protect you when trying to combo off yourself. Not really feeling the Blue kicker here, as that usually on has cost reduction for Artifacts.
Subject16: An expensive mana rock with a ridiculously steep activation cost to turn it into a creature that can get chump blocked all day.
kwanyeegor: Crag Puca is mocking your activation cost. P/T needs rebalancing with the abilities, and +0/+2 for each creature is excessive.
IcariiFA: Templating needs cleaning up. Dealing damage to each attacking creature has been the purview of White since Scourge, and Red hasn't had the ability since 1997.
Jimmy Groove: Better in a nonred deck, provided you're playing EDH, or running Tron.
Eventide Sojourner: I'm not sure how I feel about a colorless elemental. The idea of a mana dork that transforms into something huge is a cool, but I wish the beater was a little less of a generic keyword mash. 4/5 or its keywords could be green, which inclines me more to make the mana dork side a green elemental.
netn10: It does feel odd mechanically that this is a defender creature that will never be around to defend. IT could almost just be an artifact, but it's more in flavor/narrative as a creature. Green untapping here feels odd, as it tends to do that as a reactive combat trick. It's almost a psuedo vigilance here, which since this card already dips in white, seems like theyre better abiltiy choices.
Mr. Rithaniel: Quirky and unique. A good way to get value in aristocrats and such. Fun flavor too.
Hemlock: Neat though not so much a mana tithe as a preemptive storm hozer. The utility of it it being a storm enabler is quirky too. It's a neat idea but the applications for play seem pretty limited, as the disruption potential is low (sideboard only) and the cost reduction may not be worth the slot either.
Subject16: This makes me think of the totem (Foriysian Totem) cycle from time spiral. This doesnt seem so much more powerful then those cards to warrant being rare, especially since its a 4 mana accelerater versus their three. The effects are solid, but the additional costs here make it overall pretty weak. I'd rather it be pushed to a more powerful dino.
kwanyeegor: Minimally this is a 1/6 that can swing for 12 on its own turn 5 with no acceleration? The balance here feels off, and the triggered ability to change it's toughness each turn feels clunky and akward to track. The Core idea is neat, but could be simplified and costed better.

Burbling Slough

"Lost and presumed dead"
Strong submission, no apparent mistakes, solid ability and I also like the idea of simply not having a mana cost to automatically meet the challenge. I can't find a single defect here. I will only mention that yesterday (Thursday) night I went to play at a Standard tournament at my LGS and I've seen a bit too many copies of Nissa animating lands, and this card reminded me of it, obviously because after one day it's still fresh in my mind. But that's certainly not your fault, and again, I see nothing wrong with this card.
Liturgic ProtocolW
Instant (r)
Kicker (You may pay an additional as you cast this spell.)
Spells your opponents cast this turn cost an additional 1.
If Liturgic Protocol was kicked, spells you cast this turn cost 1 less to cast. Things are done in a way, and we know that way very well.
The advice I gave you about using mana tags instead of simlies applies here too, but there's the only little mistake here, and I do like this card. Taxing and rules setting can justify this card if you don't kick it or pay 2 to do, but the kicker effect is also something that blue can do. It's not the kind of effect I like to play with, but that's just personal preference. This card makes a lot of sense in itself.
Regisaur Fossil4
Artifact (Rare) T: Add B.
, Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Until end of turn, Regisaur Fossil becomes a 5/4 black Dinosaur Skeleton artifact creature with "Sacrifice another creature: Regisaur Fossil gains indestructible until end of turn". It may be dead, but it's still hungry.
Four mana for a monocolored mana rock might look a bit much to some players... But I admit I'm looking for little details because there are more than three cards I like in this bracket so I have to leave some off the top 3. I have absolutely no problems with anything on this card that's not the mana cost. I like the name and flavor text a lot, I like the animation ability, and flavor and mechanics come together very well to make a nice package. Solid work definitely.
Nimbus-Host General 2WW
Creature--Elemental Soldier (Rare)
Flying, lifelink, double strike
at the beginning of each player's upkeep, Nimbus-Host General gets +0/+2 until end of turn for each creature that player controls (2/U)(2/U)(2/R)(2/R): Switch the power and toughness of Nimbus-Host General until end of turn It takes many clouds all pushed together to make the biggest storm
1/4
Many quality/formatting... inaccuracies? Mistakes might be too strong of a word. Anyway, that and a card that's a bit too complicated for my taste. I'm sorry. As Maro always says, it just means it's not for me.
3/4
Quality mistakes, all in the activated ability: the tap symbol should come after the mana symbol in the activation cost, the word "trap" should be capitalized (it's a subtype and those always are), an extra "s" at the end of "sacrifices" (it's not third person), and today they're noticeably trying to avoid using "this" as a pronoun, so this card would very probably just say "this artifact" in both instances. But overall, I still like the card well enough despite that. Dealing 1 damage is a perfect example of an effect that colorless could probably do at high enough of a cost, and I think there are several existing colorless artifacts that already do that, but that red does much more efficiently, so this looks like a perfect use for two-brid mana. Both colors in the mana colors are represented and the stats are solid. Overall, I'd say the idea is very good, only the execution could have been a bit better.
I like this card very much, and I honestly can't find a single defect in it. Perfect flavor, solid mechanics, original use of two-brid mana. I think I've found my first place.

As I've said, there were more than three cards I liked in this bracket. In the end, the tiebreaker was just my personal preference. I asked myself: which cards would I like more to play with? Not appearing in my top 3 doesn't mean that I didn't like your card or that there were serious problems.

JimmyGroove: Very good flavor. At RRR is a powerful sweeper but the way it can be scaled is a smart use of colorless hybrid.
IcariFa: When I read tje ability I immediatly thoght of marrow shards and sandstorm, which are in the card's two colors. At the same time, red is not off-sense at all as direct damage is its thing, but I'm not sure if colorless is the best for this design.
bravelion: Simple and evocative design. One thing I would say is that this design only makes sense in an Artifact-themed block and getting the counters on exiling artifacts would have strongly conveyed that idea.
Eventide Soukourner: Tjis is a very good dork early and that transformation allows it to get nasty when not needed anymore.
netn10: This is very odd. The assortment of abilities in turee colors goes against the benefit you could reap by being able to exploit it more effectively.
Mr Rithaniel: Intersting manland, with the hybrids working more like a plus from playing itnin veetain colors.
bravelion83: It's a cool throwback to Sarcomite Myr, and it's a strong limited beater especially with the reduced black cost. Might be too efficient though.
Eventide Sojourner: A colorless elemental does seem a little weird tbh, and the transformation cost is very steep. But the flip side is very destructive, but the fact it has only four keywords on a five color creature is a bit weird.
netn10: It's some nice superfriends tech and I like how it gives an advantage to opponents in other colors. It's a cute design and I like it a lot, although the green ability is definitely too strong.
Mr. Rithaniel: It's a good manland and it's splashability is very good as well. It's a bit slow however, sacrificing a creature and paying at the least 2 mana for just one +1/+1 counter on it. I get that it's stronger every time, but compared to Raging Ravine (which did see some standard play) I think this could be a little stronger.
Hemlock: This is a nice twist on the Silence effects, and I'm interested in how the Kicker would be beneficial. You'd need to cast an additional five spells that turn to make a return on your mana investment, so I feel it's still quite balanced if not a bit underpowered. It probably does wonders for xerox decks at the least. It's a good throwback to Grand Arbiter Augustin as well.
Jimmy Groove: I like that you have some measure of control on how much damage you can deal, 3-6 damage to all creatures and players at instant speed can be very powerful, and the equipment reduction cost isn't negligible either.

I'm a simple Magic player since 1 year ago from China. Now I live in New Jersey.
netn10: It does feel odd mechanically that this is a defender creature that will never be around to defend.

Land R
T: Add C.
(2/B)(2/G), Sacrifice a creature: Put a +1/+1 counter on Burbling Slough. Until end of turn, it becomes a 0/0 black and green Ooze creature. It's still a land.
Fed the ground
—Snakekin military slang meaning
"Lost and presumed dead"
Strong submission, no apparent mistakes, solid ability and I also like the idea of simply not having a mana cost to automatically meet the challenge. I can't find a single defect here. I will only mention that yesterday (Thursday) night I went to play at a Standard tournament at my LGS and I've seen a bit too many copies of Nissa animating lands, and this card reminded me of it, obviously because after one day it's still fresh in my mind. But that's certainly not your fault, and again, I see nothing wrong with this card.
Artifact (Rare)
T: Add B.
, Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Until end of turn, Regisaur Fossil becomes a 5/4 black Dinosaur Skeleton artifact creature with "Sacrifice another creature: Regisaur Fossil gains indestructible until end of turn".
Creature--Elemental Soldier (Rare)
Flying, lifelink, double strike
at the beginning of each player's upkeep, Nimbus-Host General gets +0/+2 until end of turn for each creature that player controls
(2/U)(2/U)(2/R)(2/R): Switch the power and toughness of Nimbus-Host General until end of turn
It takes many clouds all pushed together to make the biggest storm
1/4
Many quality/formatting... inaccuracies? Mistakes might be too strong of a word. Anyway, that and a card that's a bit too complicated for my taste. I'm sorry. As Maro always says, it just means it's not for me.
Legendary Creature - Centaur Archer (R)
Vigilance, reach
T, (2/R): Create an artifact trap token with "Whenever one or more creatures attack you, sacrifices this. If you do, this deals 1 damage to each attacking creature."
The only thing hunted among the Harchon Meadows are enemies of the wilderness.

• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
