Quests for Reference:
1 - The war has started! We need to defeat those lazotep zombie armies. Design something that is good against a deck with a lot of Amass cards.
2 - The populace is in panic! We need to calm and inspire a big number of Ravnica's citizens, to rally them to our cause. Design a spell or commander for this mission.
3 - We have a plan for victory! Niv Mizzet has left instructions for the Guildpact, and we need speed or agility to deliver it. Design a vehicle or mount that can traverse the city quickly.
So it seems to me that Cardz went for quest 3 whereas Void and I went for quest 1 (meaning of course that quest 3 would have been a Bolas quest). None of the designs are especially similar which on one hand is annoying as I would have hoped to catch Cardz out on something - although the lack of flavor text seems a little indicative.
Missing flavor text should be spurious reasoning to you given your own past cards - you submitted a card that didn't even merit a guild watermark in a past round. In fact, so is "soloed a quest."
I'm gonna try to wait for Cardz to weigh in but I'm all but concluded.
How is lack of flavor indicative?
Subject16's card this round does hit its mark well, but I assume it was the known quest as there isn't any incentive to avoid it.
I stand by my design history and this round's card as well(I did make a typo on my card and forgot to include "until end of turn." on my activated ability)
As the final day comes to an end, a maniacal laugh resounds in the halls of the Inquisition.
"Well done, my minions! Now Ravnica will be mine forever!"
It's a win for Team Bolas!
Thanks a lot to all participants. This weekend I'll post a retrospective with all the hints given, tentative designs, and masterful reflavoring efforts of Team Bolas. See you around!
If I had laid bets at any given time, they would have generally been wrong, but I totally had Cardz pegged at the end.
Frankly I was never able to tell Superbajt from ztsd. They look exactly the same.
I served my city. I didn't serve it well, but Rakdos is not known for its civil servants. Fortunately, I have confirmation that the Juri Revue will remain open during our Dragon God's reign. At least he has taste.
I've been pretty curious about what mafia really was for a while, so it was cool to be involved, even if this was a hybrid of sorts.
Can't say I didn't see this coming. Cardz played perfectly and had everyone convinced until the end, so huge props to him. I definitely made a lot of mistakes along the way, but if this ever happens again I'm sure I would do a hell of a lot better.
Good game, Cardz. I look forward to Juan's observations, but in the meantime, how did you luck into that first round card design? That was really solid and, for me, carried you most of the game.
I think you did a fine job, Void; I'm pretty sure I would have done exactly the same as you had I been in your shoes. And you did a good job of establishing your alignment via card design, imo. As for subsequent games, the game I'm working on is likely going to be a little different than what Juan offered up. I don't know if I want to offer to collaborate with you on one game or if we should both develop separately and simultaneously. (I do have another pair of eyes on my tentative setup, but I'm sort of in a holding pattern until I hear from this thread what worked and what didn't.)
I'm a little sad that so many people felt like my designs were out-of-character for Izzet. I haven't played the recent expansions (*cries*), but from what I remember when I last played Izzet, they're the quirky crazy bunch more focused on their experimentation and having a blast (figuratively and literally) than anything else. I thought my cards, albeit unusual, fit that criteria. (For example, I agree that it would be unusual for there to be an Izzet cleric, but if they had one, it wouldn't be focused on healing or curing. It'd use gadgets and gizmos to effect the most expedient method of resetting a fellow creature to its default state, i.e. bouncing it so it can be played afresh.)
@Everyone: What did you enjoy in this game? If you were a Guildy, what was fun, what was annoying? If you were Bolas, was round 1 ridiculously difficult (and Cardz really did luck into his design)? Did the number of peek cards you received work? Make it too easy/hard? Etc. The more feedback Void and I get, the better future games will be.
Finally, I'd like to extend an open invitation to everyone here: if you enjoyed this in any way, shape, or form, you should consider giving regular Mafia a try. I find it a lot of fun. I've played in close to 50 games, I believe, and hosted a fair number, as well. Basic rundown is that it's a lot like this game, without the card design but with some/all players (depending on the game) having special abilities. A more in-depth explanation can be found here. Here's a link to the signup thread for the next game to start, which is Hill House Mafia, a high flavor, low complexity game with flavor relating to the Clue board game. From what I've been told, it would be a great game to get your feet wet. I'm playing in that game, and I'd love to see you come try it out. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
I am not going to say "bloody hell", but color me surprised. I would have been more surprised only if void turned out to be a Bolas agent. And from the beginning I thought it will be a piece of cake game for Guildpact...
2Cantripmancer: can't help but think the trap quests weren't fair, because it's like a stepping on a landmine. Well, I fell a victim of it so it's personal.
I like the Trap Quests in that they're a kill mechanism with interactivity and that involves decision making. I dislike them because they're a double scum advantage; if solving involves seeing how the scum deviated from the quests, and one of the scum can design for a quest that they don't deviate from...

I dislike them because they're a double scum advantage; if solving involves seeing how the scum deviated from the quests, and one of the scum can design for a quest that they don't deviate from...
I agree with this, and I also think that the trap mechanism helped Cardz hide a bit, as if Bolas Agents had had the option to kill indiscriminately, I likely would have questioned why Cardz was left alive for so long after his round 1 submission was generally accepted as coming from Guildpact.
In general I would design one card loosely inspired by one of the hit cards we received (typically the one I felt was more adaptable to dimir) and then I would make a design out of left field.
For round one... I don't really remember what I was thinking... because neither of my cards seem influenced by the hint cards... So, I'm not going to say I was lucky, but the design for round one was definitely a product of intentionally ignoring the hint cards with the intention of spinning flavor onto an original design later.
@Cantripmancer: Team Bolas just used PM for communication, sorry.
For thing being the first of its kind, I think this went really well (empty words from the winner, I know) but having the rules more codified and less pliable will definitely make for a better game in the future.
Finally, Bolas Secrets revealed! These are snippets from their machinations... I'll post the rest during the week.

Alright, let's see what we've got here:
First the, uh, Izzet card. That is an Izzet card, right? We have low power-matters, creature count-matters, and a creature tutor/Bribery effect all thrown on a removal spell. Feels very Boros IMO, with the ability to search other players' libraries being the blue characteristic here. Whatever the quest was, its specifications were probably the most likely culprit for the color pie bend. Maybe the quest had something to do with gathering allies and/or banding together to defeat something, with said recruitment not being picky about friend or foe.
Next, the Orzhov card for a different quest. There are a lot of different mechanics at play in this entry as well, which might suggest that some of the quests carry a good bit of complexity. Here we have grave hate, a punisher effect, and a spell theft mechanic, all on an instant. This could probably be a mono-black card if not for the conditions for entries to qualify as guild-related. This could be an Orzhov approach to some manner of subterfuge, intelligence-gathering, or interrogation. It also uses opposing resources, and punisher effects on Orzhov cards generally evoke extortion. Perhaps this could be an Orzhov means of gravedigging or a shakedown.
What are your takes on these cards, team Bolas?
Quote from Superbajt »
zdtsd is Orzhov, Cantripmancer is Izzet if it helps anybody.
It would be smart of them to include some red herrings in their cards to make us design to a wrong thing. I don't know if they did.
I have an idea, but maybe it would be better for some later round. We can make a vanilla, "so the Bolas don't get any information", and just think something up in a flavor text later. But it may backfire if this is actually a good idea for them, and everyone starts doing this
I agree with your comments on cards, Orzhov may be debt collecting.
Quote from BlazingRagnarok »
A whole-card red herring would be very dangerous, since the other seven players aren't supposed to communicate with each other. I agree that we shouldn't expect them all to take straightforward approaches all the time, though. Of course, being Gruul, I think I might be expected to be straightforward though. A vanilla card would be extremely cheap, and it would likely get its poster voted out. Putting all of the flavor into the flavor text and name could be interpreted as a lazy way to adapt a Bolas card to anything.
For our part, we need to pay attention to how much our collaboration shows in the card designs we submit. That means we should split who attempts which quest, since we might lose two members if two of us go all-in on the same, wrong interpretation of a quest. It might also be interesting if one of our six designs were a blind "hail mary" of sorts that can be adapted to the third quest in a pinch, since a dead giveaway for team Bolas is that three player always complete two quests between them.

This one is bent towered the second one but is honestly generic enough I feel I could flavor it a couple of ways

Quests:
1: It has come to our attention that a tiny lost homunculus named Fblthp carries very important information. We need to find this creature pronto, but it could be anywhere.
2: The entities known as Nephilim have begun stirring again. We know trying to destroy them is futile, so we need a way to contain them for long. Their defining characteristic is their embodiment of many types of magic.
3: An ally wants to transfer to us a batch of new spells that may help our cause. Help her transfer these spellbooks into our arsenal.
Superbajt:
Card 1: This I could see this going for quest 2, but it seems like a weak connection.
Card 2: Could be flavored as the golgari scouring the undercity for Fblthp
BlazingRagnarok:
The only option I see here is saying the beasts in card 1 be used to search for Fblthp, I personally would love the token type switched to boar tokens
Quote from BlazingRagnarok »
Oh, I appreciate the ability to change creature types. That makes re-flavoring much easier. Honestly, neither of my cards were real slam-dunks for any of these quests, so I'll have to get by on funny flavor text. My other option was "The Gruul took the suggestion to turn the city upside-down in search of Fblthp literally."
As Cardz5000 suggested, for my final entry this round I'm fitting my first card to quest 1:
Frenzied Digging 3RG
Instant
Sacrifice any number of lands you control. For each land sacrificed this way, create a 4/4 red and green Boar creature token with trample.
Fblthp? That's a type of truffle, isn't it?

That was an awesome idea and I feel a quite successful experiment. Thank you JuanCu for organization and everyone else for the game!
And now, my feedback:
The existence of trap quests instead of normal nightkill was difficult for us as well. It was quite flavorful, that was very nice. Of course, knowing one of the quests was very helpful (and I'd argue existence one such quest is necessary for Bolas players to not be totally screwed), but on the other hand, the fact that at most one Bolas could be there could make for some unneeded "confirmed Guildpact", like Void in the last round. I feel that me being suspicious due to killing Raptorchan was fine, but Void being confirmed Guildpact after killing a Bolas was not.
To remedy it, I think that the "known quest" and the "kill quest" should be decoupled. One quest at random is sent to Bolas, and no more than one of them can go there, but there is also a random quest (or they choose beforehand which one is it, which is basically the same ) in which if there are 2 or more people, Bolas may kill one of them. They may or may not be the same, and it's decided before they get to know the quest.
Also, I feel that different than in other Mafia variants, here Bolas are the ones that have lower info in the most important part of the game. The ties that could also screw us were quite bad. Fortunately, it didn't happen, but a random exile in case of a tie was, I feel, a bad decision from Juan Cu part.
I feel it would be more fair that in case of a tie in votes, a random Guildpact (from all players, not only tied) is exiled instead, so people make sure that no ties happen. Note that if someone causes a tie, then he can be automatically considered a Bolas next round by all players, so it probably wouldn't be as damaging for Guildpact, but just made sure the ties are not an issue.
I believe 3 Bolas may have been too much, if not for immediate Ragnarok kill. And especially if my feedback is taken into consideration, as both suggestions make Bolas stronger.
Maybe something like 7+2 which happened nearly immediately was indeed a good proportion?

Subject16's card this round does hit its mark well, but I assume it was the known quest as there isn't any incentive to avoid it.
I stand by my design history and this round's card as well(I did make a typo on my card and forgot to include "until end of turn." on my activated ability)
If Cardz5000 is Bolas and wins this way, I will not have any complaint, because in that case his play was masterful.

Congrats to BlazingRagnarok and Superbajt!
Void, you were honestly one of the biggest thorns in our side for the entire game, you're a veteran in both mafia and card design, and it showed.
Low-power cube enthusiast!

Ever-Expanding "Just throw it in" cube.

Fine work Cardz, and in general it was really fun to watch everyone play this game.
Hint Cards --
??? 2UR
Sorcery (U)
Search target library for a creature card with power 1 or less, put it onto the battlefield under your control, then that library's owner shuffles it.
??? deals damage to target creature equal to the total power of all creatures you control.
???
??? WBB
Instant
Target opponent chooses 2 nonland cards in his or her graveyard and exiles them. You may cast those spells for as long as they remain exiled, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast them.
(Now Bolas has a Trap quest: Hunting for Krenko)
2B
Enchantment (R)
R, Discard a card: [This] deals 1 damage to each player.
Hellbent-- 1B: Draw a card. Activate this ability only if you have no cards in hand.
1G
Creature - Cat Mutant
[This] can't be blocked by creatures with lesser power.
4GG: Adapt 4 (If this creature has no +1/+1 counters on it, put four +1/+1 counters on it.)
