Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!
Theme
This month we're going to build (or rebuild) a character in a kind of roundabout way. Won't spoil any more than that.
Second, a card showing the character's feelings about those around them.
Challenge
Design a creature card that quotes your chosen character in its flavor text but doesn't mention them in its name. It can't be the exact colors of your first round card.
You must use your character from your first round; if you didn't enter round 1, just choose a character as if you did the first round.
For example, if your card was black and red it could be monoblack, monored, or red-white as well as other color combinations.
Make sure to include a rarity.
Stay tuned for September's CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for October's CCL!
PLEASE NOTE: This month will continue the use of the "Mandatory Top 3 Rule." For this month, you must submit a Top 3 during a round's critique period in order to receive any points for the round. Submitting critiques as well will be worth 2 bonus points in the round.
Your submissions are due Friday, October 12th, 23:59 EST.

Grim Captain's ExplorationUB
Sorcery (C)
Choose up to three cards at random from your graveyard. Return each land card chosen this way to your hand. You may put any of the rest on top of your library in any order. Some crews are drawn not by treasure, but by those who sought treasure and failed.
Shinsnapper Croc2BR
Creature - Zombie Crocodile (U)
Whenever a creature you control attacks, you may pay BR and sacrifice that creature. If you do, return Shinsnapper Croc from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking. "It keeps the crew from straggling, and it's usually still hungry when it catches up to the enemy.'

Rhulor's Sowing3GU
Sorcery (R)
Create a 1/3 green Treefolk creature token. Scry X, where X is the number of creatures you control, then reveal the top two cards of your library. Put all land cards revealed this way onto the battlefield tapped and all nonland cards into your hand. For each plane, a seed. From each seed, insight.
Wandering Scion4G
Creature - Treefolk (UC)
At the beginning of your end step, put a +1/+1 counter on Wandering Scion if one or more other creatures entered the battlefield under your control this turn. “May the stories you hear become your leaves and bark, your roots and knots, until the day we meet again.”
— Rhulor, Gatherer of Lore 2/5
Larion’s ResearchXXUU
Sorcery (R)
Draw X cards. Return up to X target instant or sorcery cards from your graveyard to your hand. The king of Neburron had tasked him with guarding the royal library. After it was burned down in an act of vandalism, he took it upon himself to rewrite down all the knowledge of the world and rebuild it.
Incendiary Vandal3RR
Creature — Human Rogue (R)
When Incendiary Vandal enters the battlefield, destroy all artifacts. For each permanent destroyed this way, Incendiary Vandal deals 2 damage to that permanent’s controller. “The Royal Library of Neburron was the jewel of our kingdom. May whoever burned it down also experience the pain of seeing what you love consumed by flames.”

Until end of turn, target creature or planeswalker loses all abilities and becomes a green Ooze creature with base power and toughness 1/1, then destroy it. Trespassing upon Azoth's atelier is its own punishment.
Faceless Assistant2U
Creature - Homunculus (U)

Flying
At the end of each turn, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control that has been dealt damage this turn. "Each of your scars will be covered by the scales of my brood" - Dromoka, translated from Draconic.
3/4Good catch on the translated portion of the flavor text. I think the last ability needs to be "At the beginning of each end step, if a creature you control was dealt damage this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on it." Overall, this is a rather novel idea that fits right in with Dromoka's mechanics and themes. I would imagine this being GW, but I understand the restrictions barred that, but it should have still been something to avoid.

May whoever burned it down also experience the pain of seeing what you love consumed by flames.”
—Larion, Royal Librarian
2/2Seeds of Innocence seems to indicate the the wording here would be "When Incendiary Vandal enters the battlefield, destroy all artifacts. Incendiary Vandal deals 2 damage to the controller of each of those artifacts." or at the very least, your wording should use artifact instead of permanent in the second half of the ability. I would have loved to see the flavor text attributed to the opening dedication or foreward of one of Larion's new books, it would add just a hint of humor, as well as serve to display how furious Larion is to call out someone in an academic writing.
Miralda's Blasphemy2BB
Sorcery (Rare)
Exile target creature an opponent controls and each other creature they control that share a type with it. That player loses life equal to the total number of creatures exiled this way and you gain that much life. "Our faith in you was misplaced, Elenda. Now we live for so much more!"
Spawn of Ghalta4G
Creature - Dinosaur (Uncommon)
Trample
When Spawn of Ghalta dies, draw two cards. "From the blood of the sinful we earn repentance. But from the blood of the mighty, we gain true power."
-Queen Miralda
3/3Elegant design, I like that the death trigger still hold a bit of synergy with enrage. Miralda's quote here seems like it would work better on a removal spell, but it doesn't feel egregiously out of place here.
Azoth's DraughtUBG
Instant (U)
Until end of turn, target creature or planeswalker loses all abilities and becomes a green Ooze creature with base power and toughness 1/1, then destroy it. Trespassing upon Azoth's atelier is its own punishment.

- Azoth, the First Alchemist.
1/3Extraneous shuffling effects is something the WotC are trying to move away from, and most of the time the death trigger on this will be just that. If this had had a "you may look at the top card of your library" type ability, I would have been all for it. The flavor text is really on-point and is actually my favorite of the round.
Muldrotha's Grasp 2BGU
Legendary Sorcery (M)
Play up to one permanent card of each permanent type from your graveyard. (If a card has multiple permanent types, choose one as you play it.)
Poison-filled OozeGGG
Creature- Ooze (C)
Deathtouch
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, place a +1/+1 counter on it. "Eat this!" Muldrotha to Yargle
4/4Flavor text on this is a big miss for me, Muldrotha doesn't seem one to talk much, let alone use spiderman-esk one-liners. Overall the mechanics of the card are fine, but the 4/4 seems a bit pushed, and awkwardly large for deathtouch.
Funny flavor text, reminds me of Null Rod in a way. Mechanically, it’s interesting as well while being simple enough for a Common at the same time. I don’t really have any criticism – I really like your card.
Even at GGG, 4/4 and an extra effect at CMC3 seems a bit much at common. The deathtouch doesn’t play well with the creature’s stats and becomes even more irrelevant once the Ooze starts growing. The flavor text is a bit too meme-y for me.
It’s a tutor, but you only get the card if your opponent can’t manage to get rid of the Assistant before your next draw step, you manage to flash it in somehow or draw more than one card in your turn (or during your opponent’s turn). I like all the different options this card gives you, and the increased complexity makes the uncommon status very fitting (it could even be a rare depending on the circumstances of the set it’s in). Flavor-wise, your character seems interesting. I’d like to see his card.
Makes me think of the Monstrosaur from the Vivien Reid stories – I bet this was intended, albeit this one’s flavor is a bit different. A 3/3 Trample for 5 feels a bit lackluster, but the death triggers makes the investment worth it, in Limited at least. I think it’s a nice touch that the “spawn” has the same stats and abilities as the standard Dinosaur token.
Regarding recent card powerlevels, this feels much more appropirate as mass artifact destruction than Shatterstorm or Creeping Corrosion. It’s a solid card overall and the flavor matches your first card especially well.
I’m not rules-savvy enough to know if this card actually works, so I’ll just assume it does. It’s an interesting effect that hasn’t been done before, but precisely for this reason (and, most likely because of rules stuff) I think this card should be a rare. Unfortunately, your card isn’t a creature.
(I like the way Cardz5000 formatted their critiques so much that I'm stealing it. I've also fixed quality mistakes as usual.)

—Rhulor, Gatherer of Lore
2/5 A fine card that I could easily see in any real set. Feels maybe a little uninspired to me, but that's just my own taste. There is really nothing wrong about it. Maybe a little too hard to remove with damage-based spell, but that's kind of a defining trait of Treefolk.
Grim Captain's ExplorationUB
Sorcery (C)
Choose up to three cards at random in your graveyard. Return each land card chosen this way to your hand. You may put any of the rest on top of your library in any order. Some crews are drawn not by treasure, but by those who sought treasure and failed.

-The Grim Captain
4/3 Basically ninjutsu from the graveyard. Neat idea, it just feels a little strange to me seeing it in red. I'd probably like it more in blue and black, but the challenge forced you to change colors and I feel like that didn't help. Still not a bad card though.
Character: Mayael the Anima Chant of the AnimaRGW
Instant (R)
Search your library for a creature card and reveal that card. Shuffle your library, then put that card in your hand or on top of your library.
Until the end of your next turn, creature spells with power 5 or greater you cast cost 2 less to cast.
Valleyblazer Thoctar6RG
Creature - Beast (R)
Trample
Whenever Valleyblazer Thoctar enters the battlefield or attacks, it deals damage equal to its power to any target. "Now you see why the Valley of the Ancients has remained untouched by civilization since the dawn of Alara."
-Mayael the Anima
6/6 I like the subtle detail of removing white from a Naya card to show the valley being "untouched by civilization", which is a core white concept. I also like this card a lot as a whole and I could easily see it printed in a real set. Very powerful but that's expected at eight mana. The only minor remark I have is that this card could just be monored.
Boon of ZahidUU
Sorcery (R)
Choose an instant or sorcery card you own from outside the game with converted mana cost X or less and put it into your hand, where X is the highest converted mana cost among artifacts you control. "You have earned one wish."

-Zahid, Djinn of the Lamp
3/3 So the idea is to turn all your artifacts into Oblivion Rings and immediately trigger them. This looks very strong in the right deck. I'm glad this is legendary and with triple-colored mana in its cost. I really like the idea, I like a little less the high differential between when this card is useless because you have no or just a few artifacts and when it's used in an artifact deck built around it, but I feel that's an unavoidable problem on this card and not a big one anyway.
Dromoka's BreathGW

3/4 Very solid cards, both of them. I like them very much and I don't have anything bad to say about them. Obviously I'm focusing on the round 2 card now, which I like a lot, but I just wanted to say that your round 1 card is probably my favorite out of both rounds. You're a very serious candidate for the first place in my top 3.
Marchesa's CoronationRWB
Sorcery (U)
Destroy target creature. If that creature’s controller was the monarch, you become the monarch. “I thank the people of Fiora for my throne - especially Brago.”
Table MannersB
Instant (U)

-Marchesa
not quite sure if this works, but y'know, let's go for it.
I also have doubts about this working. At first I thought it lacked a mana cost, as you put it in the render but not in the text card, so I took it from the render and added it. But let's talk about the wording. Targeting within an "if" clause sounds wrong to me, you should probably say "Choose target creature. Until end of turn, if that creature's power or toughness..." But obviously the elephant in the room is the use of "increase" and "decrease". I don't remember having ever read that in the rules text of a Magic card, but it's also true that I have no alternative suggestion of a standard template to use to keep the intended functionality, which by the way is very original. Another positive thing is that at least the replacement effect is correctly worded with "if ... would ... instead", and by now I have learned that is not a given. In the end, I like the idea a lot, there might be problems with the execution but this is a reasonable attempt.
Top 3
Lots of cards I liked these round, it feels really bad to me to exclude half, but I have to, so I apologize in advance to their authors. The discriminant is just my own personal taste.

soramaro:
I guess at uncommon capping the counters is ok and encourages you to play one creature every turn instead of just spamming tokens. Nice flavor.
bravelion:
Sure, painfully blowing up artifacts is red and works well with your story.
Flintlock:
Not sure exactly what is going on but the flavor is the most interesting for this one. I guess seeing the faceless one brings up memories of ones with faces, which equal spells or something, but if it goes away that is forgotten. The ability is a nice twist on a tutor.
Subject16:
This is a fine card and all but nothing too exciting. Dies triggers are odd in a faction with enrage.
Cardz:
I'm not sure what exactly this would be useful for - it's pretty risky for a free cycle, which is fine. I kind of wish it was optional so I could build it up to attack. This is the most innovative card this round but it's a bit too strange to make a good common and too weak as is for higher rarities.
lookashiny:
The card is pretty much fine except for the rarity - look at Predator Ooze. Way overpowered for common.
RaikouRider: Veey powerful and big. The damage tied to the power brings some nice posibilities. Nice with stuff like Dragon Breath and sneak attack. Nice tie to Mayael.
lookashiny: Too much for a common. This kind of big dumb creature ussually come with very limited abilities, and this looks a bit too relevant for a common. I don't like the flavor text.
Jimmy Groove: Too dangerous to see print. very abusable.
Gateways7: Interesting effect, but sadly not
a creature.
soramaro: Nice. Simple and scalable. Good fit for a good limited uncommon.
Gerrardsmom: Very aggresive with a relevan body and cost. The trigger doesn't seem very fresh, it rings a bell on some not-so-old creature but I can't remember which.

Good catch on the translated portion of the flavor text.

Seeds of Innocence seems to indicate the the wording here would be "When Incendiary Vandal enters the battlefield, destroy all artifacts.

Extraneous shuffling effects is something the WotC are trying to move away from, and most of the time the death trigger on this will be just that. If this had had a "you may look at the top card of your library" type ability, I would have been all for it. The flavor text is really on-point and is actually my favorite of the round.

Flavor text on this is a big miss for me, Muldrotha doesn't seem one to talk much, let alone use spiderman-esk one-liners. Overall the mechanics of the card are fine, but the 4/4 seems a bit pushed, and awkwardly large for deathtouch.

A fine card that I could easily see in any real set. Feels maybe a little uninspired to me, but that's just my own taste. There is really nothing wrong about it. Maybe a little too hard to remove with damage-based spell, but that's kind of a defining trait of Treefolk.

Basically ninjutsu from the graveyard. Neat idea, it just feels a little strange to me seeing it in red. I'd probably like it more in blue and black, but the challenge forced you to change colors and I feel like that didn't help. Still not a bad card though.

I like the subtle detail of removing white from a Naya card to show the valley being "untouched by civilization", which is a core white concept. I also like this card a lot as a whole and I could easily see it printed in a real set. Very powerful but that's expected at eight mana. The only minor remark I have is that this card could just be monored.

So the idea is to turn all your artifacts into Oblivion Rings and immediately trigger them.

Very solid cards, both of them. I like them very much and I don't have anything bad to say about them. Obviously I'm focusing on the round 2 card now, which I like a lot, but I just wanted to say that your round 1 card is probably my favorite out of both rounds. You're a very serious candidate for the first place in my top 3.
Marchesa's Coronation RWB
Sorcery (U)
Destroy target creature. If that creature’s controller was the monarch, you become the monarch.
