Join us for what will be a spectacular first month of 2018 competition!
We are approaching judging time rapidly so any volunteers would be greatly appreciated. I can send virtual cookies!
Also, for anyone new(er) looking to judge, I'm more than happy to give advice. In fact I already plan on giving a few notes to judges about the challenge criteria that I feel are important to consider.
I'm kind of the default reserve judge; in case of something miraculous happening I'm going to enter (since I very much wanted to) but come the worst, I'll judge.
I think Leo might be able to as well? Regardless, please prevent us from having to do this, it would be awful nice.

Yes, thank you. I appreciate that. I'm just trying not to rely on reserve judges. Get some alternative/fresh blood in the mix.
My creativity is far below zero this month. Count on me.
Awesome, happy to have you.
Still looking for more judges! Additionally I'll be posting the critique of Pheres-Band Stalker after the round 1 deadline has passed. Can you spot all the mistakes?
I think Leo might be able to as well? Regardless, please prevent us from having to do this, it would be awful nice.
Am I still needed? Honestly, I'd prefer to play as January and February will be crazy months at work for me, I'll be busy even more than usual and playing requires way less time. Anyway, if there are no alternatives I'll do it. As I said it's not that I don't want to, it's just a matter of time availability. I'd try my best as usual, but be aware that if I switch to judging I might be making deadlines barely or need extensions and maybe won't be as thorough as usual. Let me know.

As of right now you can absolutely play as the judge slate can be me, Icarii, and Raptorchan. You're not needed to judge whatsoever. If we should somehow get another volunteer today then I won't have to judge either.
I am willing to take void's spot judging if he wants to play. He does enough around here to keep these contests going. Let the man have some fun for once.

That works too, I'll swap you in for Void. Thanks, Flatty!
Since judges are now decided I'll go ahead a post the critique for the test card above:
Design -
(2.5/3) Appeal: Timmy can appreciate that this centaur can get pretty big over time. Johnny has some time counters and +1/+1 counters to play with on an otherwise vanilla beater. Spike likes the options and aggressive costing uncommon.
(1.5/3) Elegance: Mixing counter types muddles elegance pretty hard here, as does jumbling Theros flavor with suspend.
Development -
(1.0/3) Viability: As mentioned above, mixing counter types on a single card is a problem. A big one really. The tracking complexity this adds isn’t worth it, Also, this card doesn’t work as intended. When a card changes zones, counters on it cease to exist (Comp Rules 121.2). It need wording akin to Skullbriar, the Walking Grave.
(2.5/3) Balance: This is a fine limited card, albeit it slightly pushed for uncommon. Green doesn’t get 3/3’s with strict upsides at 2CMC like this. It wouldn’t break the game but the power creep here feels unjustified.
Creativity -
(2.0/3) Uniqueness: The blend of Theros flavor and suspend is unique if completely incomprehensible. Otherwise this is a fairly vanilla suspend creature that takes Fungal Behemoth’s mechanic and fumbles it.
(0.5/3) Flavor: As previously mentioned, the Theros/Suspend cross over doesn’t make sense here. Additionally, all Pheres-Band Centaur creatures are Warriors, not Soldiers. The rising anger flavor here has some sense, though honestly makes the card feel red.
Polish -
(0.5/3) Quality: Suspend is templated wrong here, as the cost should come after the ability “Suspend — 1G”. It should probably have an “while it’s exiled” clause like it Fungal Behemoth brethren and definitely needs the Skullbriar wording.
(2/2) *Main Challenge: A given
(2/2) Subchallenges: A given
Total: 14.5/25
*An entry with 0 points here is subject to disqualification.
