You know what the best part about Halloween is? The costumes! Whether they're funny, scary, or sexy, everybody likes to put on their outrageous duds and participate in culturally sanctioned cosplay and candy begging. Every card you make for October's CCL will somehow be "dressed up" in accouterments that aren't what that kind of card usually has.
Lots of people are indecisive about what Halloween costume they want to wear. Some of them actually follow through on their indecision and go to multiple Halloween parties in one night wearing different costumes. That's the gist of this round's challenge. Challenge
Design a card that somehow has two or more distinct forms.
Make sure to include a rarity.
This challenge is open-ended. Some examples of different forms are cards with morph (face-down and face-up), overload (targeted and mass), monstrosity (non-monstrous and monstrous), and transform (this one is obvious).
Stay tuned for September's CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for October's CCL!
PLEASE NOTE: This month will continue the trial use of the "Mandatory Top 3 Rule." For this month, you must submit a Top 3 during a round's critique period in order to receive any points for the round. Submitting critiques as well will be worth 2 bonus points in the round.
Your submissions are due Tuesday, October 10, 23:59 EST.

Gideon the Uniter2W
Legendary Planeswalker - Gideon (M)
/+1\: Search your library for a planeswalker card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
/+1\: Until end of turn, target planeswalker you control becomes a Soldier creature with power and toughness each equal to the number of loyalty counters on it and gains indestructible. It’s still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to it this turn.
\-3/: Exile up to two target planeswalkers you both own and control, then return them to the battlefield at the beginning of your next turns upkeep. If those Planeswalkers are Gideon the Uniter and Chandra Aflame, Jace Mastermind, Lilian Cryptmatriarch or Nissa Uprooted meld them instead.

[0]: Until end of turn, planeswalkers you control become 5/5 Soldier creatures and gain indestructible. They’re still planeswalkers. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to them this turn.
\-3/: Exile target creature until you control no planeswalkers.
\-6/: You get an Emblem with “You may activate loyalty abilities of planeswalkers you control that you didn’t activate this turn as though none of its loyalty abilities have been activated this turn.”

And yes, you read right, there's four possible top halves. Here's Nissa for example:

I thought maybe a mockup would help:

I keep looking at this card, trying to find something to critique about it, and... honestly, there's not much. Shadow isn't used in modern design because it's non-interactive, but a Legendary Mythic based on a character who lives in a realm of twilight is a darn good place to put it. All of the abilities seem balanced, and the planeswalker-to-creature transformation is indeed a flavor violation, but it fits the design and the character. Very nicely done.
As a note, watch your wording in the future; I think the transform trigger should read, "At the end of your turn, if you attacked with two or more creatures, transform Midna."
Spell-Shell Adept 3U
Creature-Human Wizard Rogue R R: Spell-Shell Adept gets +1/-1 until end of turn W: Spell-Shell Adept gets -1/+1 until end of turn U: Exile Spell-Shell Adept, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control face down.
Morph 1U "Become a lie to seek the truth"-Narset, Rebel Khan

A fine design, but a bit busy and unexciting. A lot of strong submissions this round, so this isn't Top 3 material this time.
Eldrazi Monolith2
Tribal Artifact - Eldrazi (U) t: Add C to your mana pool. xC: Monstrosity X. (If this permanent isn't monstrous, put X +1/+1 counters on it and it becomes monstrous.)
When Eldrazi Monolith becomes monstrous, it becomes a 0/0 creature in addition to its other types.
Awesome use of Monstrosity. This design is clean, useful, clever, grokkable, and flavorful. An excellent submission,
well done.
Fey Mystic1U

Flying
When Fey Mystic dies, you may transform it attached to target creature. Into the sky my spirit will fly.
2/1 /// Mystical Wings
Enchantment - Aura (U)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+1 and gains flying.
A clean design that unfortunately doesn't stand out in a round of strong designs. Also, I think death trigger should read "When Fey Mystic dies, return it to the battlefield transformed and attached to target creature."
Callidus, the Great Misdirect1UU
Legendary Creature - Illusion (M)
Whenever a face-up creature you control becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent control, counter that spell or ability and turn that creature face down. 1UU,T: Turn target face-down creature face up.
Megamorph 4U
2/3
Innnteresting. Saves your creatures by turning them into 2/2's, but if this dies they stay trapped that way.
And it's not a may, which could lead to some interesting moments where having Callidus on the battlefield would be a liability. And the tap ability can be responded to, unlike Morph. A lot to like here, well done.

Sorcery (U)

Sorcery (U)
Aftermath (Cast this spell only from your graveyard. Then exile it.)
Up to two target creatures gain flying and haste until end of turn.
I love me a good animated musical, and even I didn't know that this was an Anastasia reference. Not that encouraging your audience to do some research is a bad thing, but this seemed like a little much, especially when all Aftermath cards are meant to be read with a "to" between both halves, which is not present in the song. But I now wish I knew Anastasia better, and I for one would like the musical references to continue.
You also designed a card. It is a fine card, and the two halves work well together, but there was very many interesting designs this round and I'm afraid this one didn't stand out.
That name is a bit cheap, don't you think? A nice take on the concealing dragonfire flavor of morph. The card is well crafted and seems fun and interactive.
Those names felt familiar, but without google I'd never have guessed. Only watched Anastasia in german after all. Rather interesting card. Very versatile. The flavor is cute obviously, but the card isn't terribly original. It's a nice use of Aftermath though.
That's some neat flavor you got going on here. However double faced cards are something special and you'll want to fill those slots in a set with cards that you couldn't do otherwise. If you think about it, your card doesn't change much between the front and backside. If you had that first ability of the backside on the front, without the backside, it'd end up being almost the same. That first R you don't pay ends up giving you -1/-1 either way. If you absolutely must, you can add an "activate only if there's no -1/-1 counters on this" to the firebreathing. There's really no need for this to be a DFC.
That Shapeshift mechanic is an interesting idea. I'm not sure if the gameplay would feel good though. Being forced to give up a premium card like that 5 drop because you need that mana early on would feel terrible, I'm sure. Finetuning those cards would probably be quite the challenge. Or maybe it would be enough to craft the right environment, where green/blue has a lot of bounce, to be able to cast the other sides later on.
The names are a bit out there, rather strange, but I guess that's okay. I like how you found such harmonic effects across four colours. The idea to be able to flip them back and forth is nice. That being said, I don't see this card being a thing, especially not that mechanic Duality. As most people play with sleeves, it's super awkward having a card with two front-faces. Even more so since people will get confused over which is the actual front, which is important for any time this isn't on the battlefield. It's a cool idea, maybe... maybe as a one-off for a suplemental set, but not as a regular mechanic.
Does this even fulfill the challenge? This card has always the same form. Sure, sometimes you cast it differently, but a card with Kicker wouldn't have met the challenge either, right? Well, whatever. I guess that's what you get with vague tasks like this. That being said, a cute card in a vacuum, but 4 mana cast any instant or sorcery? That's just going to be broken, no way.

I think playability is questionable. And I remember that playing against monoblue deck based on Morph and similar effects was a huge pain in the ass.
BrainPo
Simple and playable. Not SO interesting and I remember similar cards from SOI, but I think I would gladly play it in Limited if I can. The powerlevel is high and the flavor is on place.
Legend
Can be a monster in late game but it's just not so good. I remember Endless One for comparison (it was a rare though) but mana ability makes it usable.
Sheoldred
A lot of abilities here but the powerlevel is still low. Maybe I think a bit too Timmy, but it doesn't make me want to play it immediately.
mirrodin71
Though the card may be okay I think the ability to transform from a planeswalker to a creature again is no-no. The spark ignition is too specific thing to do that.
Hemlock
I like the flavor and playability level but the card reminds me about Thopter Assembly. Good news - it makes much more sense flavor-wise.

This has not two, but three ways of being cast. I like the effect of write, a dramatic entrance-like for spells is a great tool to have, but it's a very powerful efffect and i don't think that pairing it with a rather deep library digging is the right approach for introducing it.

Nice approach. The front part has a rather powerful acry ability, but the mandatory meld doesn't let you use it to find the artifact you want. The meld card is very intresting. The guy grows quite much but nothing too monstruous and the ability copy can be quite powerful if you build around it. One thing is that, as you meld with any artifact, you will not have a back card for the artifact. I can't think of an elegant way to work around this.
Gideon the Uniter 2W
Legendary Planeswalker - Gideon (M)
/+1\: Search your library for a planeswalker card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

Alright, this is an awesome idea. Should it be printed, it would not only be super cool, it would also start a collector rage: People would love to have them! We barely think about this when critiquing card designs, On the effects, well, it's rather rough but this would demand lots of thinking and playstesting to be done properly.

I like how you have to keep stoking it with to keep it stromg and nasty and how it wanes when you don't. That said, I don't think this has what it takes for a rare, it would sit nicely as an uncommon.
Fire-Ice Harmonized 2UR

So, a two front face card! I like the idea. It might get confusing with morph, manifest and some other issues, but if you wrap your head around the idea that either side is the front side, it's not complicated. I like how you intrgrated colors and abilities and I can definitely see this as a part of a cycle of duality cards.
Rattleclaw Channeler 1G

I have to tell you that I hate the name of the ability, but I think it's awesome. A hreat take on transform that gives you tons of design space. This could easily be a set major mechanic.
BrainPo - Looks good. I'm sure WotC will do this eventually.
picnic_bomber - Cool morph commander! Personally, I wish it was multicolored, but I won't hold that against it.
Raptorchan - Mechanically, I love this. I do not care for the names though (even after looking up the source) because they don't add up to a common phrase.
CaseAce - This is basically a fair design. Not exciting. Even with transform, it feels like an old core set card.
Koopa - kicker-transform is cool. I'm sure WotC will also do this in the not-to-distant future.
netn10 - I like the ability to transform either side. Duality should perhaps be an optional cost.

2/3
The flavor is cute but the card itself feels bad, not as in the card is weak, though it is certainly not turning heads, but rather having an upkeep cost that doesn't kill it but rather just nerfs it just feels wrong. I never want this to flip, and while having a backside of a card be the "bad" side is different, it doesn't exactly scream fun.

6 mana to deal 6 to your opponent that can be split into two different payments AND can potentially do more is very good. The flavor is obviously strange without knowing the source material though.

Creative way to take the challenge and flavorful at that! Tribal is obviously outdated technology but Monstrosity fits the Eldrazi perfectly. Bravo.

{3}
//////// (Bottom half of meld card, multicolor frame, white box)
[0]: Until end of turn, planeswalkers you control become 5/5 Soldier creatures and gain indestructible. They’re still planeswalkers. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to them this turn.
\-3/: Exile target creature until you control no planeswalkers.
\-6/: You get an Emblem with “You may activate loyalty abilities of planeswalkers you control that you didn’t activate this turn as though none of its loyalty abilities have been activated this turn.”
{8}
And yes, you read right, there's four possible top halves. Here's Nissa for example:

/+1\: Create a 4/4 green Elemental creature token with trample.
As you can see, the top halves are completely interchangeable.
I thought maybe a mockup would help:
Obviously the frame would have to be different. Everything moved upwards a bit. That would also make more room for the lower abilities.

Awesome use of Monstrosity. This design is clean, useful, clever, grokkable, and flavorful. An excellent submission,
well done.
And it's not a may, which could lead to some interesting moments where having Callidus on the battlefield would be a liability. And the tap ability can be responded to, unlike Morph. A lot to like here, well done.
You also designed a card. It is a fine card, and the two halves work well together, but there was very many interesting designs this round and I'm afraid this one didn't stand out.

So, a two front face card! I like the idea. It might get confusing with morph, manifest and some other issues, but if you wrap your head around the idea that either side is the front side, it's not complicated. I like how you intrgrated colors and abilities and I can definitely see this as a part of a cycle of duality cards.
I have to tell you that I hate the name of the ability, but I think it's awesome. A hreat take on transform that gives you tons of design space. This could easily be a set major mechanic.

picnic_bomber - Cool morph commander!

This is a tweaked version of Kira without reminder issues. Megamorph is kind of a boring way to fulfill the challenge but it meets the requirement well enough.
Interesting card overall. Flavor is strong. Honestly feels like it could be a common.
A morphling variant with morph. It's cute but morph is such a boring way to fulfill the challenge.
Creative way to take the challenge and flavorful at that! Tribal is obviously outdated technology but Monstrosity fits the Eldrazi perfectly. Bravo.
