I'm thinking that I should have worded Towering Redwood's ability like this instead..."All damage that would be dealt you or another permanent you control by red instant or sorcery spells is dealt to Towering Redwood instead." Oh well, it's too late now.

Yes, that would have been the right wording indeed. For reference, the original wording was this:
Whenever a red instant or sorcery spell would deal damage to you or another permanent you control, that spell deals that much damage to Towering Redwood instead.
The mistake here is that "whenever" implies this is a triggered ability, while "would" and "instead" imply this is a replacement effect. It can't be both at the same time, so which one is it? The correct wording clarifies this getting rid of the "whenever", so there's no doubt about what it's meant to be.

Oops, I meant to post the original card for reference in my earlier post. Anyway, I copied the card out of my list of cards last night while in a bit a rush and didn't realize it was worded incorrectly until this afternoon when it was too late. For the record, I always intended the card to work as stated in my post above. Oh well. Thanks Bravelion.

I wonder why, tbh. I mean, the difference between replacement effects and triggers is quite intuitive... one causes an event to happen in place of another, one causes an event to happen as a response to another. "Whenever A happens, do B instead." is not just improper Magic formatting, it's improper basic English grammar.
I wouldn't say it's improper grammar to say "Whenever A would happen, do B instead". For instance "Whenever you would smoke a cigarette, chew gum instead" makes a lot more sense than "All cigarettes that are smoked by you are chewed gum instead." Perhaps I'm missing something here though, I'm not an English teacher or anything. Magic-wise, I'm not denying that my card was worded incorrectly in its original form.

State of ZenWWUU
Enchant Creature - Aura (M)
Enchanted creature has protection from everything. This doesn't remove auras.
I already saw that card somewhere... I like it a lot, I prized that card in the MCC and I did it again here in the DCC, but you still haven't got the templating right. At first, in the MCC, "Enchant creature" was missing, now it's there but in the wrong place. "Enchant" is no longer on the type line, and it hasn't been since before I started playing in original Ravnica. Put in this way, it looks like Aura is a subtype of the card type Enchant.
To be clear, this is how your card should be (and how I had it in my mind when I was judging it for the MCC):
State of ZenWWUU
Enchantment - Aura (M)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has protection from everything. This effect doesn't remove auras.
Thanks for the reminder! I'm pretty bad at wording cards and somehow I still don't know how to word auras. I will keep that in mind. And glad you like it!
No problem CryoZenith! My original posting of Towering Redwood did have the word "would" in it. I'm not arguing that it might be worded incorrectly from a Magic standpoint, but I'm pretty sure it's ok grammatically.

Basically the line of reasoning is to signal replacement effects - in general, at least - with the word "if". Between that and the intervening-if clause portion of the rules, the result is "when you see 'if' in a wording, pay attention very closely".
Where it gets tricky is that there are replacement effects with only an implied "if" (example, regenerate) or no if at all (example, Unleash).
In fact, that is only a guideline. If you check out the Comprehensive Rules, you find an exhaustive list of everything that is technically a replacement effect:
614.1a Effects that use the word “instead” are replacement effects. Most replacement effects use the word “instead” to indicate what events will be replaced with other events.
614.1b Effects that use the word “skip” are replacement effects. These replacement effects use the word “skip” to indicate what events, steps, phases, or turns will be replaced with nothing.
614.1c Effects that read “[This permanent] enters the battlefield with... ,” “As [this permanent] enters the battlefield... ,” or “[This permanent] enters the battlefield as... ” are replacement effects.
614.1d Continuous effects that read “[This permanent] enters the battlefield...” or “[Objects] enter the battlefield...” are replacement effects.
614.1e Effects that read “As [this permanent] is turned face up... ,” are replacement effects.

Honestly, I didn't like the wording. "during your most recent turn." sounds wrong, even though technically it may not be. "Recent" is a term that has been used very rarely in magic history and on very old cards, so it doesn't read as contemporary or elegant. That left it behind other cards for me.
Ambriel the ImmoralWWBB
Legendary Creature - Angel Demon (R)
Flying
When Ambriel the Immoral enters the battlefield, each player exiles his or her hand until Ambriel leaves the battlefield.
5/5
ha, rad.
maybe have the exile be face down? then again, playwise, the extra information might be more interesting
So my card today doesn't seem to be garnering much support. I'm curious to know if that means people are not digging the retrieve ability. I actually thought of the ability a few months ago, but have recently been revisiting it. I'm starting to think I might drop the alternate cost and word the ability like this...(You may cast this card when it is put into your graveyard, if it was put into your graveyard from your library. You must still pay its mana cost.) I think that the ability may already be really strong due to its inherent card advantage, so there is no need to make it stronger by decreasing its casting cost. Although the alternate cost does give the ability a lot more flexibility. Anyway, anybody's thoughts on the ability are welcome and would be appreciated.

you almost did get one of my votes cuz retrieve is sweet
i could see it not havn some appeal since it involves something few cards do. obviously the ability would appear in a set that'd make it revelant, just like how madness appeared in an appropriate sitch
Votes: IcariiFA, Piar (Love the card, but I think it's undercosted)
Reanimated Slave
Creature - Zombie Minion (U)
Deathtouch
When Reanimated Slave dies, put a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
2/1
"Do not mourn for him, his spirit has finally been set free."
that just reminds me of "i know why the caged bird sings"
Imperious ScholarWU
Creature — Aven Wizard (U)
Flying
Whenever an opponent searches a library, you may put Imperious Scholar from your hand onto the battlefield.
2/2
triggered abilities dont really work from hand. this'd work as a static ability tho like, "if an opponent searched their library this turn you may cast ~ as though it had flash without paying its mana cost."
Thanks for the feedback Rudyard. Glad you liked it! One problem with posting new abilities is, if you don't get votes, you're never sure if it was the ability or the card that people didn't like. I'm hoping it was the card, 'cause I too think retrieve is sweet.
that just reminds me of "i know why the caged bird sings"
Is that a good thing? Also, are you referring to the poem, or the Maya Angelou book?

Ditto. As a WU tempo control player. I'd love this card if it existed, but I feel its waaaaaay too good. Bumping day of judgment effects to instant speed by itself is worth more than U, yet alone the upside of just you getting a creature unlike divine reckoning.
Thanks for the correction on my wording Bravelion. Also, thanks for looking past my miswording and voting for the intent of the card. I knew my wording was probably off, and I intended to look into it more, but RL got in the way. I'd also like to point out that in my flavor text, "mouth full" should be "mouthful".
Edit: I just realized that the end of my flavor text is all screwy. It should be "mouthful of worms", not "mouth full worms". Sorry about that, the flavor text was a last minute change. My work has been crazy lately, and my card making has been suffering from it. Stupid priorities!

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
(Probably NSFW) So you may have heard I'm trying to write a TV series...

That left it behind other cards for me.
ha, rad.
maybe have the exile be face down? then again, playwise, the extra information might be more interesting

i could see it not havn some appeal since it involves something few cards do. obviously the ability would appear in a set that'd make it revelant, just like how madness appeared in an appropriate sitch
btw
that just reminds me of "i know why the caged bird sings"
triggered abilities dont really work from hand. this'd work as a static ability tho like, "if an opponent searched their library this turn you may cast ~ as though it had flash without paying its mana cost."
Is that a good thing? Also, are you referring to the poem, or the Maya Angelou book?
A red card that ineracts meaningfully with enchantments is rare even if it isn't rare.
I like this card, but it seems like a bit too much of an improvement on Duneblast in too many ways.
Ditto. As a WU tempo control player. I'd love this card if it existed, but I feel its waaaaaay too good. Bumping day of judgment effects to instant speed by itself is worth more than U, yet alone the upside of just you getting a creature unlike divine reckoning.
Edit: I just realized that the end of my flavor text is all screwy. It should be "mouthful of worms", not "mouth full worms". Sorry about that, the flavor text was a last minute change. My work has been crazy lately, and my card making has been suffering from it. Stupid priorities!
