I'm on vacation this weekend and won't really have time to do proper critiques until tomorrow sometime. I'm going to go ahead and post a top 3 and come back and do crits later, even if they are after the deadline.
Round 1 of a month's CCL should never go up later than the first of the month. The finals will definitely still be going on by that point, so please never wait until that happens. In fact, early signups this month seemed to increase participation, so I encourage you to put up the thread earlier than 8/1 if you can.
Are you aware of how to format the threads and how to score the rounds?
Copy that. I'll post it as soon as I've written out the challenge for Round 1.
I'll use this month's threads as templates if that's OK. And as for scoring, tell me if I'm missing anything:
1st place = 3 pts
2nd place = 2 pts
3rd place = 1 pt
Critiques = 2 pts
Finals vote = 2 pts
Top 8 combined averaged scores from first two rounds advance
Top 4 averaged scores from third round advance
Top 2 scores from the fourth found make the finals
Finals are decided by public poll
Am I correct in my understanding that the only cut made using cumulative totals is going into round 3? Also, can we continue the mandatory Top 3 this month, or is that just up to me?
Under the current system, that is indeed how it works. Please note though that voting in the finals gives you one bonus point per round in the first two rounds (at least under my calculations), so your score for the first two rounds looks like this:
(Number of Top 3 points in round 1 + 2 points if critiqued + 1 point if voted)/possible number of points in round 1 + (Number of Top 3 points in round 2 + 2 points if critiqued + 1 point if voted)/possible number of points in round 2
After the first two rounds only the score in the elimination rounds matters. Your top 8 score alone determines whether you go on to the top 4 and your top 4 score alone determines whether you go on to the finals.
...Finally, mandatory Top 3 is up to you, but given the good results it's had this month I would encourage you to continue along with it.
Since I'm requiring a Top 3 in order to grant any points for the round, I think it'd be redundant to add the extra point for those who did vote. They're the only ones getting points anyway, right? (If I understand it correctly)
The confusion only lasted a moment. I retracted my comment shortly after making it.
I'll be posting August's Round 1 soonishly. Gotta scavenge for some dinner first, then I'll finish it up. It's up. If anyone would like more clarification, or just has a question, lemme know.
Regarding my July top 4 entry... Now that it's been soundly defeated, let me explain. It's a ridiculous card, and I know it. It was very much a draft of an idea that just never got updated due to time constraints. Everyone was unnecessarily kind in their critiques, which I appreciate.
@doomfish: The combined version of the two triggered abilities of your card would look like this: "Whenever you cast an artifact spell, if ~ is tapped, untap all artifacts you control."
Except for fringe cases, it would function the same.
This is the second month in a row where the CCL has started early and also the second month that the finals and the first preliminary round have the same due date.
Can we change this? Sorry to sound whiny, but I feel like I'm being penalized here.
Isn't that the reason why Round 1 is posted early in the first place? In case the previous finals run into the current month?
Anyway, I wouldn't mind extending the round 1 deadline to Saturday instead of Friday in this case, especially since the challenge is a bit more in-depth than usual. The second round can afford to lose a day.
New August Round 1 deadline: Saturday, 8/5, 23:59 EST
That's exactly the reason for the early start; the final rounds shouldn't have to run halfway into the following month. As for deadlines, extending August's round 1 deadline was hardly necessary but that's fine. In any case, Icarii, you've been in enough CCL finals by now to know that the deadline can always be extended, so I'm not sure why you would interpret this as being penalized.
Actually, this makes sense. It makes each round last 5 official days.
Zero thought was given to July's deadlines when posting August's Round 1. At the time Round 1 was posted, July's Top 4 hadn't been judged, and there was a possibility I'd make the finals, myself. So, definitely no penalization was intended. (Honestly, August's scheduling was straight copypasta from July)
If deadlines for the same contest from month to month fall on the same date, it's a penalty to the finalist who now have two challenges due on the same date. Solving one problem by starting the CCL earlier has created a slight different, albeit narrower problem.
I realize that matching deadlines happen across the various contest on these forums, but it shouldn't be that way within the same contest. Also I understand that this was not intentional, but I think it's reasonable thing to mention and change.
July I did a throw away entry for my first round since I was so focused on the June finals. I don't want to be in the same boat again.
I think I will return after a while. But a quick question, would using two cards from two ravnica sets be cheating (since they were sorta designed to be cycles anyway?) or just clever usage of the rules?
@drewdagreek - Some cycles do span multiple sets in a block. The point of the challenge is to use to otherwise unrelated cards, anyway, so I'd advise against this idea.

Yes, the whole card is monogreen because the back face has a green color identity. It counts. However, the CMC still is not 6 or higher.
