A question about May Top 4 for the host. I chose to let it pass in my critiques, but as the other contestants have also mentioned, it would be nice to have an official word whether IcariiFA's cards pass the challenge or not, as there is no plane reference on them and the challenge asked for cards from a specific "Modern era" plane. Those cards are generic enough in flavor that they could be from one of those planes, even though nothing says they are. My critiques and top 3 don't change for now, but I definitely see the need for a final word from the host about this.

Assuming you can believe that the cards represent the Jeskai, then they pass. Prowess debuted as a block mechanic in Khans of Tarkir, and the flavor of the cards does fit the Jeskai Way, whose ranks included Wizards and elementalists. That was my interpretation, anyway, but if you want to say how much the flavor did or did not fit that context in the critiques, then that's fair game for ranking points.
Thanks for the response void_nothing. I hadn't really thought of the fact that prowess didn't debut until Tarkir, which is the last block listed in challenge. It's a little weak, but I suppose that is enough to place IcariiFA's cards on that plane. With that settled, I will try to have my judgments up post haste.

The challenge felt more strongly worded that merely being located on a specific plane - it asked for it to be "plane-themed", meaning thematic of that plane. The spirit of the challenge seemed to be creating cards that were clear callbacks to a plane and, even better, were most believable on and possibly exclusive to that plane.
I don't think I buy the "Jeskai Way" thing: none of the wizards on Khans have "Prowess" - they are all monks except for one warrior Seeker of the Way. Prowess on Khans had more to do with martial arts and Asian-themed weaponry than with cards like Stormchaser Mage in Oath of the Gatewatch. I don't think most people would think that that card is a callback to Khans - I and others certainly didn't. The lore/plane-driven inspiration for Flatline and Bravelion's cards were clear to me, and it is fairly clear to me that the inspiration behind IcariiFA's was not lore/plane-driven. I'll keep the rankings as they are.
I don't disagree with what kjsharp is saying. Until void_nothing pointed out that prowess implies the cards are from Tarkir, I was actually thinking IcariiFA was technically disqualified.

By the way, here are two designs that I am very pleased with and excited to share. These resolve a few of the conundrums I was facing when designing my pipe and drum. It was very very difficult to get the splashy hedonistic feel right while balancing the effect for Limited, Standard, and Commander. No one commented on this, but at heart these are fun political diplomatic cards for multiplayer formats. I like finding ways to give Naya colors increased agency over a game of Magic, and this was a fun way to do it.

Just thought I'd chime in since my entry was controversal, but I didnt want to interject on peoples opinions of this matter.
Did I intend on my cards being Tarkir flavored? Yeah that was the direction I was going. Was I finished with them? No, not really. As surmised by others, this were bottom up designs which I decided on the abilities before trying to tie in the flavor. The names and flavor text were placeholders that I put in to revise later. However, between some surprise serious life events and originally thinking I had Saturday to come back to these, I missed reworking them. So what you all got was half baked in terms of the challenge.
It's a pity too. Sans that I would of had a good shot of knocking one of you two out of the finals ;). Oh well, next month. I'll settle on semi finalist here and endeavor to take the MCC instead!
I liked your cards quite a bit IcariiFA. I'm sorry you weren't able to finish them. I will say, if they were flavored more strongly for Tarkir, I probably would've had you in first. As it was, kind of missing out on the whole point of the challenge was enough to push bravelion ahead of you. I liked his cards slightly less mechanically, but felt they were much more in line with the challenge. Anyway, good luck in the MCC.

As I noted, I didn't get to finish mine either. I really like where the cards are now, but it would have been nice to have formally submitted them. And Flatline came up with his idea the evening of the due date, so he was under the gun as well. I really don't understand why the semifinals should only be 2 days long. Creativity takes some time to simmer. I'd recommend shaving a day off of Round 2 and adding one to the semifinals. The extra day would do all the participants good.
Indeed! Well, maybe because we're actually both involved in it? Just maybe? Honestly, I'm glad Ormos wasn't included, I wouldn't want to turn this into who can design the most popular card for our own custom set. One day we'll definitely have to come back to it by the way... I know I keep saying it, but one day we will!

Literally part of my thought process was: "Hey, I know what custom world I always liked - Ormos. Maybe I'll include it. Better check the set thread... oh. Wait."
I won't have the time or inclination to fully research ten custom planes just for the purpose of casting a single vote. I'll give each set thread a quick perusal while evaluating the submissions, but will definitely be weighing mechanics far above flavor this time.

Yeah, it's a tough one. I spent quite a while last night reviewing the custom sets assigned to me knowing full well most of the people voting won't. It's a super cool challenge though. I enjoyed taking a look at other people's sets. It's not something I regularly take the time to do.

All this completely applies to me too. I spent the whole afternoon yesterday reading about my custom planes and I only got three out of four, I had to do the last one later in the evening. I think I might have spent something like nine or ten hours total doing that.
And now a kind word to the voters. While I totally understand lacking the time or will to look at the custom planes' threads and voting only based on mechanics, allow me to say this: you're missing a lot by doing that. I'd really appreciate if voters took the time to evaluate how the cards flavorfully fit their respective plane because of two reasons: 1- it's kind of the point of the challenge and 2- that's exactly what I worked on during most of those hours. By looking only at mechanics, you're only considering way less than half my work. Consider that it's also very difficult making splashy and appealing cards while being restricted to common/uncommon only and only evergreen keywords.
Finally, I also want to make big congratulations to the host void_nothing for coming up with one of the most difficult and at the same time fun challenges I've ever seen. I absolutely loved reading and learning about all those places. Magic players are supposed to be planeswalkers in-game, and here I really felt like I actually am a planeswalker and I absolutely loved that.

I think the challenge should have focused on one of those planes - perhaps design one card of each rarity and a land. Asking way too much of the voters to study 10 planes. Probably asking too much of the participants in the challenge as well, given the short time frame.

I can only speak for myself, but that wasn't the most difficult aspect of the challenge to me. Yes, I spent hours studying those worlds, but as I said I really had a great time doing that. The most difficult thing to me is the restriction on rarity. Trying to make cards that don't read too bad or too boring while also sticking to lower rarities in terms of elegance, word count and power level is very difficult, way more difficult than it looks. I'm trying my best and I'm sure Flatline is too. I think I'll keep pondering my cards until very close to the deadline.
And as for voters, I think my previous post came out sounding way worse than I intended. I'm just asking you to take a brief look just so you know at least what kind of world and set each card is for, because those cards are not designed in a vacuum and are meant to exist in that specific contest. Also, obviously you should only do that if you have both time and will. Nobody is forcing you, the final poll is open and everyone is free to vote following whatever criteria they want. You'd just do me a favor if you could, that's all.

Loving this month's first round challenge. Got a question.
Is it up to the individual voters whether to deduct points for cards designed specifically with multiplayer in mind, or can that be made an officially acceptable design angle? Gotta know before I decide on a basic design to bang my head against.

It's up to individual contestants, of course, but c'mon - it's a Conspiracy challenge. Multiplayer only's a completely valid angle. It's very much in going with the "Spirit of the Round" or whatever and I doubt anyone would dock you for it.
Is there any chance we could get a 1 day extension for the May finals? I've had an extraordinarily busy week, and I'd like to get another chance to look over the source material for the challenge. I spent quite a while doing that the first night the challenge was put up, but I planned to get in at least one more good perusal, which I haven't had time to do. TBH, it might not even matter since I'm taking my son camping with the Boy Scouts this weekend (starting tonight) and still might not get a chance to look things over. I fully understand if you do not want accommodate this request, but I just had to ask.

BTW, my crits are up.
This is what I was looking for. Thanks for the official word. Again, my top 3 stays the way it is. If that's the case for all contestants (as it looks to me) I think we can move along.

@ Flatline: Posting this here so that I can keep my round post for actual submissions:
