Hey Void, I'm a tad confused by the Round 2 challenge. Take my Lunar Eclipse card, for example. Do I need to design a creature card that is inspired in some way by Lunar Eclipse, or that is inspired by "the moon"? Interacting with lands is a major theme of "the moon" in Magic, but it is not the only one.

Please remember that the challenge required the card to be an instant or sorcery when awarding scores. It looks bad to give people points who didn't follow the rules.
Thank you for the heads up! Caught one but not the other. Feels bad to not have more to choose from.

Your round 2 card doesn't have to have anything to do with your round 1 card or its mechanics or colors or anything like that. You just have to incorporate your round 1 concept that you picked (Moon, in this case) as well as a new one you pick for this round.
Ah yes, I see. The moon is made of stone and stones are often used for counters, tide counters for example, and when you return creatures do player's hands, they have to play them again, so that you can counter them. Very clever. Clever indeed.
Wow, that's some Illuminati-level theorizing right there! You're giving me far too much credit. The moon controls the tides, and the dam itself is made of stone. Tide counters are to simulate the dam weakening somewhat under load. I appreciate the thoughtful critique, and agree that non-sentient walls make perfect flavor sense.
The wording should definitely be "As an additional cost to cast Shed Blood, sacrifice a creature", since the spell does nothing without it.
I don't have any problem with your critique and I'll gladly take the second place in your top 3, but I just wanted to point out that the wording is actually completely intentional. It's to prevent you from losing the creature if the spell doesn't resolve for any reason. I wanted to avoid the feel-bad moment of something like Fling being countered and you losing the creature anyway. You might have a point that the "you may" should not be there though.

@proudawesome --> do you think that The Scorpion God is a color pie break then? You stated point-blank that only blue and green get straight up card advantage, yet here is a black-red card that does exactly that. I'm personally of the opinion that all colors should have access to meaningful and direct card advantage, although White least of all and Blue most of all. If Red never gets access to real card advantage, then it will never be a real color of Magic. We see this in Commander, where White and Red are just vastly inferior colors to the Sultai colors. This week MaRo indicated that this was a problem that they're trying to figure out how to fix. The only answer will be giving Red and White direct card advantage in ways that feel Red and White. We can see this problem in Standard too, where Red might be the only color not to be the dominant color of a tier 1 Midrange or control deck in the past 4 years (or longer, but I only started paying attention during Theros). Mardu Vehicles comes the closest, I think, although White is the dominant color there. In fact, Red might be the only color during that stretch to not be a dominant color in more than one meta-archetype in a Tier 1 deck. I'm personally very happy that Wizards printed The Scorpion God because that shows that Wizards understands that Red has a mechanical gameplay color flaw that needs to be corrected. Regarding my card, Red is the color of love, romance, and emotion, no? Why can Red not be inspired by passionate love to draw cards?
Fundamentally, one color of Magic cannot have a gameplay philosophy of "short-term gain, long-term loss" and still be coequal with its peers, with regard to either power or depth. Magic is a strategy game. All colors should have a variety of short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies and openings that they can feasibly employ, albeit in their own unique ways and with lesser or greater frequency, with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. "Short-term gain, long-term loss" should be a deckbuilding decision, not a color's core identity. Red is the color of fiery passion, human inspiration and prophecy, freedom, and the societal chaos that can accompany freedom. It is fundamentally Promethean in character.
I think it is important to recognize that Wizards is in the stage of exploring how to give Red direct card advantage in ways that feel Red. They haven't arrived at a suite of methods and abilities that they are satisfied with yet. They began that exploration about three years ago with cards like Act on Impulse and Commune with Lava. Pyromancer's Goggles constituted a novel take in its own right. Outpost Siege and Chandra, Torch of Defiance constituted a different take. The Scorpion God constitutes yet another take. Loveforged Gazer is yet another take. We should be open to innovation.
For what it's worth, every contestant has the right to critique using the criteria of their choice, especially when this means applying current color pie philosophy rather than having to extrapolate.
@kjsharp — I wrote my response hastily. I should have mentioned it is only primary in Green and Blue. Red can, less often, and in a Red way, perhaps like Combustible Gearhulk. Drawing off a scry feels too aggressive to me.
Higher rarities do card bends from time to time, centered around a color’s particular themes (for The Scorpion God it’s -1/-1 counters and creature death; makes sense).
You can disagree with me if you like, but overall I didn’t like your card as much as some of the other entries.

Just to explain Loveforged Gazer a bit further for those interested, it was directly based off of Le Petit Prince. I did Le Petit Prince because of the lunar theme; Le Petit Prince was a boy who lived on a small asteroid with a flower, a flower that he grew to love. He watered it every day, and the flower told him sometimes that she was unique amongst living beings. When Le Petit Prince grew older, he wanted to explore other planets and search for life's meaning, and so he flew to various planets to see how others led their lives. On the first several planets he visited he did not like what he discovered.
He finally made it to earth, where he saw tons of other roses just like the one he had tended to on the asteroid, and he saw other humans like himself. He had an existential crisis of sorts, for he saw that he was not unique in substantia, and nor was the flower, that which he loved. He then met a fox, a fox that asked Le Petit Prince to tame him. Le Petit Prince was mystified, wondering why he would have a meaningful relationship with a creature when there were tons of other foxes just like him. The fox replied with the alternate flavor text I provided - that love is real and it is love that makes us unique creatures because the relationships we forge are unique themselves; that the effort he had put into watering his flower made that flower unique and special and worthy of existence. The fox wanted that sort of connection to Le Petit Prince. Existential crisis averted.
So that is why Loveforged Gazer is a Soulbond creature, and the scrying and card advantage is a reward for the "effort of love" of being soulbound and getting in for combat damage. There's actually quite a bit philosophically going on beneath the surface here that feels very Red - love's tenuousness and difficulty(you have to keep both creature's alive), the individual's questing for meaning (drawing a card off of a scry to the bottom). And the card as a whole fits in Red because Red is the color of passion and love from the vantage point of the individual.
Le Petit Prince is the most popular children's book in France today, and it is popular world-wide. It's been translated into nearly every language. I highly recommend it, either in the original French or in an English translation.
Thank you for the votes, glad to take home another title this year. Between this and the MCC, 5/12 isn't too shabby!
I'd love to hear more feedback and thoughts on Hyper magic, the Plane of Kylshin I created for the set, and the designs in the booster I submitted for the finals.
a question for round CCL July Round 3 Challenge, do the split card have to be the original kind of split card, or can we go with the kind, Fuse, Aftermath, the 5W or new kind of splits ?

As a total side note, can mods please send out reminder emails for critique deadlines in the future? Not getting my Round 2 counted because I missed the deadline was super disappointing.
Just speaking for myself... no, probably not. There's plenty of notice for every critique period. The full schedule is in the OP of each thread starting from the very first round of the month, and I typically post multiple reminders here in the discussion thread.
You're not required to critique; this is spelled out pretty clearly. If you think you won't have time for critiques, posting a Top 3 literally takes about a minute.

That's totally fair - I didn't know I should be monitoring this thread closely, so in the future I'll be sure to do so. If you guys do decide to let me run a CCL, I (just speaking for me) will probably do it, but that's because it's where my preferences lie. Thanks for the response, Void!

I'd love to hear more feedback and thoughts on Hyper magic, the Plane of Kylshin I created for the set, and the designs in the booster I submitted for the finals.
Aftermaths and fuse cards are still split!
No dice on the five-way though. :-p
