Hey dudes, sorry I was late, finished April. Haven't done the math for the overall winner.
What does "activate an additional effect" mean for May? Does Fumarole qualify, or does this mean an activated ability? I don't get how it can be "required" but also be "additional."

Fumarole does not qualify. The life payment must be for activating an effect other than casting the spell. Kickers, cycling, activated abilities, etc. Thrull Parasite and Vizkopa Confessor are recent examples. Perhaps I should have worded the main challenge as "Design a card with an additional effect that requires you to pay life to activate.", but that seems just as confusing. Apologies.

Can MCC Hammer confirm whether Silph's and Solesticio's cards satisfy the round requirement Round One: Design a card that requires you to pay life to activate an additional effect.

Oh, man. Sadly, I have to say that neither entry meets the requirement. silph's does not have an additional effect that requires you (the caster) to pay life, and Solesticio's does not have an additional effect at all. Sorry, guys. =/
I know this round was a bit confusing, but this was addressed pretty early in. Even if you feel like you understand the challenge, you should always check the clarifications, just in case.

Adding that entry to my flawless card roster anyway!
You totally should. It was actually painful for me to dock the .25 from your entry and the .5 from Socrates's entry for such minor things. That's one of the awkward things about this contest; it forces you to play designer, developer, and editor.

Oh well, another Round 1 failure. See you all in June.
I'll be around too. Maybe next time I get the balance right.

i realized after the deadline that my design doesn't meet the qualificiations (noteably, that it's the controller of the card that has to pay the life). seems like we had a lot of DQs this round.
but could someone still judge my card anyways? that's the real reason i come participate in the MCCs, anyways.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on your card. Because at first glance to me, it looks like just a basic mountain with a drawback. Is there something else I am missing?

Partially seconded (it is not the only reason of why I take part of this.) I've been too busy with the artwork forums, alterations and RL to came and spend time designing cards lately. I've jumped in cause I would like to know how rusted I'm. Receiving an evaluation would be supercool.
The challenge called for ''pay life to activate an additional effect''.
What it meant, probably, was [...] an additional life payment that gives the spell an effect that is not mandatory for its resolving (hence, additional).
That would make entwine valid for the round, if my maths aren't wrong. Would it?

thanks for the reply, spezza.
i toyed with making it a Swamp Mountain instead of a Mountain, so it didn't read as a drawback, but then kept it as a Mountain to emphasize the "tricksy" idea of gaining an advantage by having your opponent make a choice that looks good but isn't. it feels interesting to me that your opponent theoretically /should/ feel good about being able to make the final choice, but in practice not being sure if it'll hurt them more than help them. [if a burn or red-deck-wins player plays this as their fourth land, should their opponent steal it, or not?].
i'm wondering if i'm overestimating, in reality, it'll be a free lava axe right when you need it, vs a land that you lose when you need it.

The way I see it, it's a strictly worse nonbasic Mountain. Why would you ever run this over a mountain? Mountains can't be stolen from you because of their own abilities.
Now, with all those DQ's, I'm worried about the possibility of entwine paying life being not a valid "additional effect"... Would anybody mind to clarify if it would be or not? (to just leave my expectations for this month if they're in vain.)
The challenge called for ''pay life to activate an additional effect''.
What it meant, probably, was an activated ability on either a permanent card, or an additional life payment that gives the spell an effect that is not mandatory for its resolving (hence, additional).
I guess it can't hurt if, in cases like this, the MCC organizer looks over the cards submitted and gives a headsup if it doesn't meet the requirement. For my card, for example, I toyed with making it a Phyrexian Arena style card, with a triggered upkeep effect, but that wouldnt meet the requirement. Now that its an artifact with an additional effect (additional as in, it can still ''exist'' without activating it) it does. That is a little bit wonky.
You're correct that Phyrexian Arena wouldn't qualify, as the life loss is an effect, not a cost. If it had a triggered ability that gave you the option of paying life, it would qualify. I gave a couple recent examples in the clarifications. Thrull Parasite was the straightforward and obvious one. Vizkopa Confessor was the less obvious one. It gives you the option of paying no life and thus getting no effect, or paying a number of life and getting an effect.
All in all, however, this is a failing on my part to be as clear as possible regarding round requirements, and I apologize to those it has effected.

Yes, there is always a chance that an opponent without all of the information will make the wrong choice. (e.g., play this turn 1 and opponent steals it, thinking he might be land-screwing you, but you actually have several mountains in hand.) But really, I don't think you can design an entire card around an opponent making mistakes. "Punisher" cards (Browbeat, etc.) need to be win-win, where no matter what, you're getting something ahead of the curve for your investment. The drawback being the opponent gets to choose what that something is. A plain old mountain isn't ahead of the curve. It's why Vexing Devil is worse than a vanilla 4/3 for R.
I like the idea of a punisher land. It's a neat concept. But the card needs another ability to be balanced. Making it a dual could work, but I wouldn't be a big fan of that, since duals are almost always designed in cycles, and punisher effects don't really work outside of R/B. I would give this a spicy activated ability of some sorts, instead. And it would have to be a pretty big one to negate what I feel is a big drawback.

What does "activate an additional effect" mean for May? Does Fumarole qualify, or does this mean an activated ability? I don't get how it can be "required" but also be "additional."
Also, scores are in for April!
Moss_Elemental 21.5 + 14 + 19 + 17 + 11 + 15.5 = 98
Ryoma Echizen 21 + 18 + 23 + 19 + 20 + 21 = 122
Socrates 22 + 21.5 + 23 + 17.5 + 16 + 23 = 123
spezza19 21 + 23 + 17 + 20 + 17 + 23 = 121
The_Cooler 17.75 + 17.75 + 18.4 + 16 + 20 + 16 = 105.9
Congratulations to Socrates! That was an incredibly close round.
