I keep stressing over whether to make my card W, GW, or GWB. Part of my quandary has to with whether we are going to need to complete the cycle in future rounds, and in particular whether this needs to be a 5-card cycle. Some of the ideas I have I'm envisioning as 4-card cycles (ManyCookies touched on that in the post above --> I'm considering making all cards in the cycle have Green, which would result in a 4-card cycle). Can you tell us whether our cards need to be conceived of as spearheading a 5-card cycle?

Judging this month sure did take a lot more work and effort than I had imagined beforehand. Hopefully it gets a little easier the more you do it - I found myself slowly making the rubric better work for me and found myself needing to correct myself less for uneven scoring across days/sitdowns -, but I came away with a newfound appreciation for the work that goes into judging the MCC competition. Judging by a rubric takes more time.
The rubric itself is quite interesting. I have many unformed thoughts about it.
I've completed my judgment. I'll look over it tomorrow and adjust as necessary. I enjoyed seeing so many fun and interesting designs this month, both from those I provided feedback for and those I did not. As I told ManyCookies earlier today, I wish we had added the stipulation that the card needed to be double-sided, flippable, or fused. Thanks to ManyCookies for hosting this month. I don't want to judge this month, but maybe in February I'll volunteer to judge.
I'm a bit surprised that didn't transpire through the card's flavor text, but I guess it's something to keep in mind for the future.
It seems more obvious to me now in hindsight. I think I was trying to interpret your card as completing the 2nd subchallenge, trying to find something evil or sinister in it, and that led me astray. I think, too, that I didn't make the connection to the initial vision of exiling - that of merely laying down one's arms and simply leaving the battlefield fight altogether. I've raised your score slightly. Thanks for writing back!
Alright looks like IcariiFA closes out the year with another win, good work*! And a thank you to my co-judges for their time and effort.
That was an interesting month. I'm a little dissapointed Silver Border ended up a bait, they're much harder designs and aren't really rewarded by the rubric for it. And I was reluctant to make it one of the subchallenges, I didn't want to strongly pressure people into Silver Bordered land if they didn't want to. Also I had trouble coming up with good subchallenges. You'll note a lot of freebie subchallenges I put in when I couldn't think of a second one (I'm sure yall had trouble making a non-mono black christmas card), and others were a little too vague. Ah well.
*Though you got a bit lucky with the pairings in Round 2!

Was it necessary to take a pot shot at my victory? Seesh. I'm tired of this.
There is always luck in the MCC, especially in the first two rounds between pairings and only having a single judges opinion. I'm not saying this past month I had the most spectacular entries ever, but come on.
I really enjoyed a lot of the silver-bordered entries. Everything from Gnome Alone, to White Elephant, to Bonfire Dance, to Flash Party, to Hot Potato. I'm glad we did some silver-border stuff. Congratulations IcariiFA!

My apologies friend, I truly meant nothing disparaging of it. It'd be very strange if I, the Magic/Hearthstone player, gave "Man you got lucky" any credit!
(For some reason I instantly thought the character was female, I wonder what that says about me.)
That's actually what I was going for. The original idea I had was to depict the character I made for June's MCC during her fall from grace. I almost added her name, but didn't think it was worth the extra crowding in the text box.
Johnny (.25/1) likes the "gotcha" aspect of the card but curses under his breath that the card says "creature card name".
I originally wanted it to be able to hit tokens (which would have given it more utility than just a worse Nevermore) but black-border rules don't quite work that way and it didn't "feel" like a silver-border card.
Huh, is there a comprehensive rule that'd hard stop "Choose a creature card name or creature token name" from working? 201.3 only stops naming a token if asked for a card name, but that doesn't prevent a card from asking for a token name.
You'd probably have to word it like: "Choose the name of a creature. When a creature with the chosen name enters the battlefield, you gain control of it."
It's tricky or novel only because heretofore naming has referred to existent objects, not hypothetical objects. Players and cards "with X name". I'm asking Hittite to choose a name in the abstract. That may not have been done before, but is it something that can't be done? The difficulty The_Hittite might be grappling with is that a card's name, like its rarity symbol, might not be a genuine property of the permanent/object. I think it is a genuine property of a permanent because tokens can have names (e.g. the token created by a flipped Nissa, Vastwood Seer). It feels different to me than, say, counting the number of vowels in a card's name.
Maybe you could word it: "Choose a name. If a creature with that name would enter the battlefield under an opponent's control, it enters the battlefield under your control instead."

I might be in the minority here, but I wish the entire month asked for uncards only. Although I've never once played with an uncard (and probably never will), I enjoy that they exist, and I enjoy making them from time to time. One thing's for sure, mixing uncards and "real cards" is a but of a toxic brew, especially in a competition as formal as the MCC. Comparing uncards to real cards is a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

I agree, it would of been better if it stuck entirely to uncards. Force people (like me) out of our comfort zones haha.
I'll be running a bit late on my MCC judgements. They are mostly done, but I'll need to wrap them up tomorrow morning.
In hindsight, I played it too safe with that challenge and wound up paying for it. My original design was probably a lot stronger, but it was part green and when Icarii said multicolor cards might not meet the main challenge, I panicked. I wound up overcompensating and ended with a card that wasn't really bad, just bland and unoriginal. Lesson learned for next month.
Just for clarity's sake....Are we only subtracting points in the main challenge category for cards that aren't deckable in Standard, or should we also be weighing Standard more heavily in balance?

If their entry does a good job of hosing Brackeon Spell-Rider, then it should get full points in the main challenge. But, despite the fact it may hose Brackeon effectively, if you feel that it wouldnt really be in the main or sideboard despite stoping brackeon, then take off points in balance. If their entry doesn't do a good job of stoping Brackeon, is too easy to play around, wouldn't really stop the archetype, etc... deduct in the main challange.

Yeah I felt I had to design against RDW as a whole. Because stopping the exile and cast for free abilities seems like stopping just the gravy. The real problem is the 3/4 Exava-goblin, and all those 1 drop and two drops before it.

MtG is where you can hate white players or black players, and still not be racist.
Before you say something about me bearing old grudges, IcariiFA, you did tell me that judges should be called out by participants when they are objectively wrong about something.
Testing Grounds 1GW
Enchantment (R)
Whenever a creature attacks or blocks, it loses all abilities until end of combat.
Everything falls away, and your true strength is revealed.
(3/3) Quality: Looks good.
It is objectively impossible for this card to receive a 3/3 in Quality. Because of the way the rules of Magic work with Characteristic Defining Abilities, it is impossible for a spell or ability to make a creature lose its abilities without also setting its base power and toughness at the same time. Cards like Aeon Chronicler and Tarmogoyf make it so.
That's not the topic of this thread or this forum, and is likely to be inflammatory. Let's not get into it, there's a dedicated thread for that.
Just to be clear, if you discuss something not actually related to the MCC - the just-ended round's challenge notwithstanding - you will be infracted for spam.

I like this next challenge, I hope you take off points for overly narrow hosers that couldn't actually be sideboarded or maindecked.
You're Right! That's why your card would be part of a 5 card cycle!
And yes, you can expect cards that wouldn't be deckable for standard to be penalized in some way even if they do weaken the target card.
Though your preface was totally unnecessary.
What do you think about the Ramunap Ruins and Rampaging Ferocidon ban ManyCookies?
