It's still pretty wordy, but that wording works. As you have it, because equip is still sorcery speed (even if the cost is nil), if they have a spell on the stack targeting you, it doesn't matter if the equip is or :1mana::0mana::0mana:...you still can't equip it at instant speed. This wording just allows you to target a creature and attach the equipment to it. Poof, done.
