Please forgive me if this is a stupid question but, what is the problem with Curse? I've heard others blame the switch to Curse for the rapid decline in participation in the card creation threads, but I don't really remember MTGS before the switch.

It's kind of like when Frodo was hiking up Mt. Doom with Sam, but under the influence of the one ring could no longer remember the details of his life in the Shire. We've all been Stockholmed into using Curse and can't really remember much about old MTGS, except that it was better.

We used to have formatted titles and trophies, God damn it!
Is it that the site used to have more of its own customized formatting like that, and the switch to Curse forced the format into more of a generic forum? I've only been here about a year so I don't know anything about this stuff.

Think of the formatting stuff as the insult and the unusably crappy interface as the injury.

We did lose some of the MtG templating functionality, which was annoying but slowly added back in (though we STILL don't have public polls for the DCC, seriously!?). But more importantly the Curse site was significantly slower, especially on mobile. We had some regulars who couldn't even use use the site cause performance was so bad.
I think the public polls for the DCC actually might work again now, but I personally prefer it without them. Of course I don't date back to when polls were used in the DCC, so maybe I'm just biased. It seems like the poll would make things a lot harder on the host since he would have to go through and make sure that each person competing actually voted for 2 cards from the previous day, but I could certainly be wrong, as I said, I never did it with the polls.
Somebody earlier said something about the old site having titles. I've heard of the trophies contest winners used to get, but this is the first I've heard of titles. What kinda titles were given? How did one earn them? I'm curious about these sorts of things because I have seen a massive decline in participation in the card creation threads in the last couple of years, and I'm wondering if there is any way to reinvigorate interest. There has been a mass exodus of quality designers, and I wish they'd come back. Even you Flamingos.

We took a pretty big hit to both numbers and momentum with the switch to Curse.
This thread died due to a combination of factors, largely the quoted.
Switch to Curse led to a few problems. The site was the first rollout of custom forum software for Curse, so we were in effect beta testing. We also asked for many of our custom vBulletin features to be replicated (see: public polls, etc.) and while we got many, I'm sure we sacrificed overall usability for this. Devs can only work on so many things at a time.
The mobile site in particular was particularly unruly. We finally got a mobile view but it was not really super great and had a lot of usability issues. Bad mobile ads today keep me from using the site on my phone.
One more thing that often goes unmentioned is that Curse is categorized by many work filters as a gaming site, while the old vBulletin site was not. So many people were no longer able to browse at the office.
Those three things combined led to a massive reduction in traffic for the site overall. Combine that with the unrelated rise of Reddit and Twitter as places for serious discussion about MTG and you get a losing formula. Old users weren't sticking around because things were bad, and potential new users just went to Reddit.
On a more personal note, a lot of this thread was driven by me and the Flamingo guys. Obviously not totally, but this thread was our old stomping ground before we started to pick people up and move to different chat media like IRC or whatever. As we grew older and our life circumstances changed we sort of grew out of it as well. I can only speak for myself, but this was where I dumped my time and energy when I was in college. After graduating I started to focus that energy elsewhere and lost interest in CCC on the whole. Without that, plus the fact that the Flamingo guys moved elsewhere, I lost reasons to visit.
It's a shame in some ways. I actually browse the weekly "best of" Reddit custom cards every week, but beyond that I don't really use this as a creative outlet anymore. I'm working full time and I have other hobbies now.
So, fond memories for me. It would be fun to start it up again but I just don't engage with this site often enough to check in.
We are still the biggest thread in this subforum by over 10k posts. It was a blast, but for me at least it's only memories now.
