I am not officially complaining, as I've rolled dice to judge challenge before.
my first thought was for everyone to roll a d6 and for all the sixes to do a playoff roll of more d6's etc. etc. then i thought 'well why doesn't everyone roll a die with sides equal to the number of players?' then i thought well there'd probably be ties so i picked the smallest number i thought would guarantee no top-end ties.

Like I said, I can only go by my own experience, which is now 18 years. Kind of disheartening when you think you know something and you find out that you're a notch below a low grade moron.
what I did was to rate everybody's entry from 1 to 5 (with comments), then roll that many d20s for each person. The person who had the single highest roll won.

Not complaining either, just amusing myself. Also, I can't abide a failing score;)

it doesn't have to be linear. let's say a score of 1 is really a score of 99%. Then, for each additional point in the score, that equates to .0X%^2. i think the equation would be
y = 99 + .01*(x-1)
where y is your percentage score and x is your roll.
better?

i guess all i'm saying is, you shouldn't expect to succeed with randomness. the average roll is 50.5 - once you can accept that that's the roll everyone gets in the macro, then you realize the futility and irrelevance of the micro.

It's not like we couldn't see this coming. I've been playing this for a little while now and I've never seen even seen this Socrates guy before.
I don't like this resolution of the challenge, but I think it was probably the best way to do it. One of us arbitrarily judging always feels presumptuous. At least we all get a fair shake this way. I don't think I could tolerate throwing my fate to chance more often than once in a blue moon, though.
Well, then, all that's left to do now is wait for Oculus to give us our next challenge, I suppose.

I'm not against new players throwing their hat in the ring, but they need to follow through.
Well, I actually have a deep, intense hatred for new players. Anyone who showed up here anytime after me must be purged from this forum for the good of all involved.
But, actually, I didn't mean to imply I'm against new people. I only meant to say I wasn't surprised by this. A good half of the time we have trouble getting the judge to do his job in this thread. When the judge is someone you've never seen before, you have to assume he's more likely to bail than someone who's been involved in the thread consistently for an extended period of time. I don't really know what can be done about it. I'm just calling it like I see it.
Also, Oculus apparently issued his challenge while I was typing this, so...

where's the cut off for newbs? shards of alara? shadowmoor?
I thought the unrealistically exaggerated position made the sarcasm pretty clear. Who uses the word "purge" in serious conversation, anyways?
When you ignore the first paragraph, my only point was that someone who shows up out of the blue, having not been seen in a thread in months, is far more likely to bail than someone who's been consistently active for a while. I wasn't trying to make some grand philosophical point. Just stating the obvious.
