Why do people say 1 card combo? Combo is derived from 'combination', which means there are more things that involve. Not just one card.
I think the idea is you get an effect out of one card that you would normally need a combo for. It is pretty loose language but lots of sayings dont make sense if you think about them too much - thats the fun of slang. Not to mention the fact that there is definitly a sub-dialect of 'magicese' and in that world - '1-card combo' makes perfect sense.
