I've been working on a defensive version of trample for a while. While I tried simply flipping the original reminder text of trample, that mechanic had the downside of easily enabling draw games. As a result, I produced a modified version that delays the life loss until end of combat.
Retaliate (Whenever this creature deals excess combat damage while blocking, attacking player loses that much life at end of combat).
While triggered abilities on keywords are always a little bit iffy, this thing is close enough to trample for me to feel safe with it. Unlike trample, retaliate works with Defender and has special synergy with Flash and Vigilance. Putting both Trample and Retaliate on a card can also be quite flavorful. Plus, it's a defensive ability that doesn't overlap with existing ones.
I can't figure out what colors this ability would fit into, however.
I mean, lots of things enable draw games in certain circumstances. It's a very specific set of circumstances this ability would do so in if it were just "inverse trample". So I see little point in making it more complicated and less intuitive than it needs to be.
I could see it in white, black, and red, in that order. Meglonoth suggest it's maybe part green, but I think the blocking ability of that card is the RW part talking.
Based on previous "counter-attack" effects, I'd say this is RW.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I don't think they'd keyword this, though. They don't want to discourage attacking as that leads to game stalls. Hence why we've seen this ability all of once, to my knowedge.

I think that retaliate would be a Naya mechanic. I can see this on a really big beast creature that has vigilance and must attack each turn if able. Because a creature would have to be big in order for this to be effective, it would most likely involve green. The idea of retaliation and combat interaction is white-red though.
