This is a cycle I'd suggest for Modern Horizons, based on the old Medallion cycle.
Each Sage bears their namesake Medallion in their art. Each has a cost of 3M, as unlike the Medallions the Sages also reduce the mana cost of additional Sages.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Compared to the familiars (nightscape familiar), these cost a bit much and offer less spell discounts despite being slightly larger. I think they can safely cost 3cc.

I like them... I think going through the characteristic races might be nice for a bit more type variety.
I considered making the blue, red, and green sages a Merfolk, Dwarf, and Elf respectively (a Dwarf is more likely to be a sage than a Goblin, and I want to push Dwarves as a tribe more). My concern is that the different types would imbalance the cards in the greater meta game, making the green and blue look that much better and the red look worse due to lackluster Dwarf tribal support.

Well, if they were all 1/1 they could probably even cost 1M. Which would effectively make them Magus of the Pearl, Magus of the Sapphire, etc. But the Zelda fan in me likes the idea of associating Sages with Medallions.

They should cost more than the Planeshift Familiars. It's much more awkward to build a 3 color deck, where you want to have lots of the 2 side colors, but also push the middle color heavily since you want to get it's mana early for the familiars...compared to the simplicity of the mono deck. I'd cost them at 3 CMC, with stats around rate for a 1 CMC creature.
I also think it'd be nice if they had different stats.
0/3 or 0/4 for 2W, 1/1 Flier for 2U, 1/1 Deathtouch for 2B, etc...
A cycle of 1/1 Human Wizards sounds good to me. But, should they cost MM instead of 1M? Then multiple copies don't get cheaper off each other, though it also means the Medallions don't work on them, which is a bit of a flavor miss. How about 2/2 Human Wizards for 2M?
