Hey all,
I've always been a fan of powerful draft formats with strong themes. I want to take a step back in time to formats like lorwyn, ravnica, and mirrodin where building synergistic decks was the focus of draft. I also prefer more powerful draft formats like cube and modern masters; where the focus isnt getting 23 playable cards but more on making decisions on which cards fit better in your deck. So with that in mind, I'm building my own set to draft with friends; with a couple things in mind:
-every card should support the main theme
-every card should be playable
The theme im going for is "build your own mox-strosity." Players will build a collection of seemingly useless mox artifacts, and power them up in different ways depending on their play style. Im uncertain about rarity and certain designs, this is really a first pass. So without further ado, some of the cards ive come up with;
Mox
artifact-mox
Mox ammolite
artifact- mox
: add 1 mana of any colour to your mana pool
Fusion station
artifact
: create a mox token
Gemstone fissure
Land
When ~ etb, create a mox token
add to your mana pool
Gemstone Furnace

instant
counter target spell unless its controller pays X, where X is the number of mox you control
goblin mining crew
creature- goblin
:stymtap: sacrifice a land : Create 2 mox tokens
2/1
glass-cannon crew
creature-goblin
mox you control have “sacrifice: deal 1 damage to target creature or player
2/2
Refraction bolt
instant
~ deals X damage to target creature or player, where X is the number of mox you control
As an addional cost to cast ~, sacrifice X mox.
Target player discards X cards
The idea is to have the critial mass of support-payoff cards.
Each colour will have its own roles
Blue: horned turtles and mill, counters and draw
Red: destroy opposing mox, blow up your own mox for effects
Green: use mox to create giant monsters
Black: sacrifice your own mox for powerful effects
White: undecided. leaning towards also making mox creatures of a different flavor; probably go-wide/flyers; or maybe a hate-bears theme
These are actually cool. I thought they’d be overpowers but they’re mostly balanced.

I would - if I were you - step back and think about whether you would want to play a format where every player is pushed into a single, parasitic, theme. Powered Cubes and Modern Masters are built with a bunch of different strategies in mind. The only thing to do drafting these cards, in a vacuum, seems to be "grab every Mox and stay in-color."
Is there any point to making these Mox tokens as opposed to Junk tokens or something else that is not yet already tied to a certain mechanical theme you don't deliver on?
The only thing to do drafting these cards, in a vacuum, seems to be "grab every Mox and stay in-color."
Wouldn't that be wrong though? It seems like getting Mox producers would be superior than getting Moxes themselves - which in itself seems like bad design, but there we are.

Yes, i wanted the mox producers to be more powerful than naked mox. I feel like the producers would be high-picks, where the basic mox would be a late pickup if you find yourself short, but then youre powering down your deck, cutting lands, and so the snowball grows. Finding the right balance for me is fun in draft; perhaps some of the colourless producers are too good to justify that tho.
My goal was for a format like Lorwyn, where almost every card had a relevant creature type or supported that theme. The only problem with lorwyn was there wasnt enough removal to snipe the keystone out of an oppents strategy ( Silvergill douser ) and often the success or failure of your deck revolved around opening/drawing a lord.
Perhaps having better, more varied tricks and removal would help with that, and designing some emergent archetypes that interact with the main theme. I can already see RW anti-mox being a strategy; RU tempo, as well as blue mill with that single late-pick common, or black punishing you for going too deep.
Ill also think about designing cards that interact in a way that is less linear; sortof like Paradoxical Outcome and the like, or even adding a handful of staples like eternal witness and pyroclasm. Id have to do some testing to see the flaws however; this is really a "bluesky" prototype
I came up with a couple cards that would be more interactive; and push certain subthemes:
Lava blast
instant
choose 1:
~ deals 3 damage to target creature
destroy target mox
Bauble inspector
When ~ etb, detain target artifact
2/2
Gemstone Merchant

^pushing the theme of black punishing the opponent for going too deep.
