Cool podcast. Look forward to hearing some Duel Deck progress when it comes.
Dan and I talked a lot when I was initially putting together Serenta, a -1/-1 counter themed set, so when I saw brainwash I came to many of the same conclusions that was shared here. Instead of marking cards with -1/-1 counters, my solution was temptation, a mechanic that allowed cards to become marked either by your choice or by other cards:
You could still make cards that actively "corrupted" like Reuben and Dan talked about, and did things based on enemy cards having -1/-1 counters (In fact that's a sub theme in Serenta.) My solution was just an inverse for flavor reasons, as the term "temptation" defines along with the color change.
First card that comes to mind for your challenge:
Auntie's Herald2B
Creature - Goblin Shaman (U)
Whenever a card leaves your graveyard, Auntie's Herald deals 2 damage to target creature and you gain 2 life. Aunties make sure the boggarts share what they know so her heralds can do something actually useful.

First, thanks for the critique. It wasn't as hard as I expected. Actually, I didn't even expect to see a card from our project here at all. Also, thanks for mentioning me and my articles again ("The Lion's Lair", link in signature). We were aware of many of the issues you talk about, such as restricting the design space of other things using -1/-1 counters, but we just considered it within our block, not in the blocks surrounding it. Trying to do it would be very hard in my opinion, because a custom block doesn't have any official block before or after it. In fact, the great majority or cards caring about -1/-1 counters in the block this comes from (Ormos, those interested can check the links in my signature) do so either via brainwash or via interacting with brainwash. Also, hearing you talk about it made me understand like never before how different it is to take a card in a vacuum and inside its environment. To understand the flavor of it, including why it is a Rat, you have to know the larger picture of the set: what the Brotherhood is, how brainwash is tied to it, etc... For example, there are other things that let you take control of the creature, this just happens to not be one of them. And yes, the block is top down, at least in the sense that flavor came first and we are trying to capture it with the mechanics. Finally, as we have it now the discard is random, but I was honestly wondering whether that should not be the case even before hearing your critique. The same goes for your version of brainwash. I too would like to know how it plays, but unfortunately we haven't run any playtest yet (planning to do that soon), except for a couple playtests Flatline had in real life, but I don't know if this card was involved in them.

Longtime fan of your podcast here, posting for the first time. Things seem to be rather quiet in this area of the forums lately, but I'm hoping I'll be able to be a part of the custom card community here (and maybe get some of my cards critiqued!)

My submission for the design challenge! This is actually a card from my upcoming set, "Ante Up!" which is a chance themed set, thus it has a fair amount of dice rolling and coin flipping at lower rarities. It's actually themed after conspiracy, for limited formats only.

Well in case you are still looking, or just to get feedback either way:
I came up with this recently and it seems to me it would be a great fit for the contest
I was very tempted to only give hasters first strike, but then doing both and being Boros seemed to be a little more flavourful and colorpie friendly, and I couldn't resist the symmetry...
